Golf has grown steadily and well in Argentina since 1891 when the first course (Lomas Athletic Club) was inaugurated. Today there are 69 courses, 51 of them operated by private clubs. Australia Population: 10,000,000, Number of golfers 100,000. Number of courses: 1,000. The bulk of these courses lies in New South Wales and Victoria, the two most populous states. Royal Melbourne, a superb course, was designed by Alister Mackenzie. Austria Population: 7,000,000. Number of golfers: 800. Austria has only 8 courses. The Vienna Golf Club, the oldest, lies on an island in the Danube, Belgium Population: 9,000,000. Number of golfers: courses is Royal Antwerp founded in 1888. 3,000. The oldest of Belgium's ten Bermuda Population: 44,000. Number of golfers: 1,100. This tiny golf minded island group has four 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course with a 9 hole public course now under construction. Most famous layout is Mid Ocean designed by C.B. MacDonald Brazil Population: 65,000,000. Number of golfers: are situated near Rio de Janeiro. 3,000. Most of Brazil's 21 courses Canada Population: 18,000,000, Number of golfers: 350,000. Number of courses: 675. Royal Montreal, formed in 1873, is not only the oldest golf club in Canada but also the oldest in the western hemisphere. It now operates 81 holes. Ceylon Population: 10,000,000. Number of golfers: 500. Ceylon has six courses in all, two of them 18 holes, the rest 9 holes. The Colombo Golf Club, the heart of the island's golfing activity, is the oldest course, dating from 1879, Republic of China Population: 650,000,000 of whom 11,000,000 now reside in the province of Taiuan, Number of golfers in Taiuan about 1,000. Before World War II, six courses were in operation in Taiuan but presently only Taipei and Tam3ui are functioning. Denmark Populations 4,500,000. Number of golfers: Approximately 3,000. The Royal Danish Golf Club, the country's first was organized in 1891, Denmark today has 12 courses, several of them of superior quality in both beauty and design. Finland Population: 7,500,000. Number of golfers, approximately 400. Number of courses: 6. The most prominent Club, the Helsinki Golf Club, at Tali was founded in 1923 and is the oldest. Handsome oaks line many of the coursed fairways. France Population: 44,000,000, Number of golfers: 12,000. The first course was built at Pau, north of the Pyrenees by Scots who had discovered and loved the region during the Peninsular War, later returned to live there. France today has 73 courses. Germany Population of the Federal Republic of Germany (Including West Berlin) 55,000,000. Number of golfers: 9,500. The first German course, the Berlin Golf Club at Berlin-Westend, was a 9 hole layout built in 1895. Present number of courses is 50. Great Britain and Ireland Population: 52,000,000. Number of golfers: 2,000,000. First recorded evidence of golf was parliamentary decree in 1457 discouraging the game. Honorable Company of Edenburg Golfers (1744) and the R & A (1754) are oldest permanent clubs. India Population: 375,000,000. Number of golfers: 10,000. The oldest golf club, Dum.Dum, near Calcutta, was founded in 1830. Today there are some 30 good courses plus innumerable minor ones in mining settlements and in tea garden areas. Italy Population: 48,000,000. Number of golfers: around 3,300. Italy's first golf course, the Acquasanta Club outside of Rome, was opened for play in 1903. In the north several 18 hole courses are presently under construction. Japan Population: 90,000,000. Number of golfers: 500,000. The golf boom Japan is now enjoying has swelled the number of courses to 200. The most beautiful is Kawana on the Izu penninsula. The oldest is Tokyo Golf Club's Koraozawa course. Malaya Population: 6,000,000. Number of golfers: 3,000. Number of courses: 30. The first course constructed was the Singapore Golf Club at the Old Racecourse. It was completed in June 1891, and moved its present location near Bukat Timah in 1924. o 4 Mexico Populations 35,000,000. Number of golfers: about 5,000. The first course, the Mexico City Country Club, now the Club Campestre dela Cuidad de Mexico, was founded in 1906, At the present time Mexico possesses some 30 courses. Netherlands Populations 10,000,000. Number of golfers: 4,850, The Netherlands is the home of kolven, an ancestor of golf, which was played with a wooden stick and a wooden ball on frozen canals. Today the country's golf courses number 20. New Zealand Population: 2,370,000, Number of golfers: 50,000. The two islands comprising New Zealand contain no fewer than 330 courses. The Otego Golf Club, the first, was laid out in 1871, twenty-two years before the first Amateur Championship, Norway Population: 3,500,000. Number of golfers: about 1,000. Norway has six courses. The first to be built was that of the Oslo Golf Club on the rolling hills at Boystad outside the capital city. It was opened for play in August 1924. Peru Population: 10,000,000. Number of golfers: 1,500, The first club was Lima Golf Club outside the capital city. It was built in 1897 and is regarded as one of the most delightful in the world. All in all, Peru has ten courses. Philippines Population: 24,000,000, Number of golfers: 25,000, The country has 42 courses, 30 in Luzon, 8 in the Visayan Islands, 4 in Mindinaro, Oldest is the Manila Golf Club and hardest is Wack Waclc's East Course - The Courae of 880,000 Hazards, Portugal Population: 9,000,000, Number of golfers: about 600, Portugal has 6 courses, A new 9 holes is underway at Estaril adjoining the celebrated 18 hole layout at the resort. The country's first course the Oporto Golf Club, was created in 1890, Rhodesia and Nyasaland Population: 8,500,000. Number of golfers: 8,000. Within the federation, formed in 1954, there are 9ome 70 courses. The largest number is to be found on the great southern African plateau of Southern Rhodesia 5,000 feet above sea level. South Africa Population: 14,000,000, Number of golfers: Approximately 50,000, South Africa, long a golf-minded land, has some 240 courses. The Royal Cape Golf Club was the first to be formed. It was set up at a meeting held in November 1855. Sweden Population: 7,250,000. Number of golfers: 12,000. There are 60 golf courses in Sweden, Of these, 17 are full 18 hole courses a remarkable number when one considers the severity of the climate and the very long winter stretches, Switzerland Population: 5,000,000. Number of golfers: 3,000. Switzerland has 23 courses, most of them charmingly sited but relatively short. The Engaeline Club at Samedan near St, Moritz, the oldest (1896) and best known, is 6204 yards long. United Arab Republic Population: 24,000,000. Number of golfers: 3,000. There are presently six courses in the United Arab Republic, By far the oldest is that of Cairo's Gezira Sporting Club. It wa3 opened for play in 1892 and has produced many topnotch golfers. United States Population: 175,000,000. Number of golfers: over 4,000,000. Number of courses: 5,745. The oldest permanent golf club, St, Andrews, was formed in 1888, seven years before the inauguration of the United States Open and Amateur Championship, Venezuela Population: 6,000,000. Number of golfers: almost 3,000. The recent construction of new courses has brought the country's total number to 28, Eight are 18 hole layouts. The oldest, built in 1917, is the handsome Caracas Country Club. The preceding facts and statistics give us a chance to brush up on our geography and golf history.
