T h e Golf C o u r s e Superintendents of N e w England and the M a s s a c h u s e t t s T u r f & Lawn G r a s s Council have o v e r t h e y e a r s made v a r i o u s attempts to get the r i g h t people int e r e s t e d enough to get r e s e a r c h plots on the University campus. F o r the past s e v e r a l y e a r s the thinking has been to have a r e g u l a t i o n golf c o u r s e on the U n i v e r s i t y campus to c a r r y turf r e s e a r c h under actual p l a y i n g c o n d i t i o n s . The M a t e r i a l s section of the budget should have a l l of the m a t e r i a l s that you intend to buy and give a s m a l l explanation as to the need and the importance of the particular a r t i c l e . R e m e m b e r that you have to stick up f o r y o u r r i g h t s . A l s o put the cost of the m a t e r i a l so that the r e a d e r doesn't have to keep r e f e r i n g to the f r o n t of the budget all of the time . St. P i e r r e The m i s c e l l a n e o u s section should be devoted to the extras that you have to spend that d o n o t d i r e c t l y c o n c e r n the c o u r s e . Maintenance of Tennis Courts, Club house grounds and r e p l a c e m e n t of worn equipment. I f e e l that the club should be kept i n f o r m e d of the condition and the age of the equipment so that they can be p r e p a r e d to r e p l a c e the old b e f o r e it gets beyond r e p a i r . THE GOLF COURSE BUDGET The purpose of the budget is to show the club what to expect for the coming season and to give them an idea of how much m o n e y is to be spent and w h e r e and f o r what. I f e e l that a good budget should be divided into four sections, L a b o r , M a t e r i a l s , M i s c e l l a n e o u s and Special R e p o r t s . The f i n a l section of the budget should contain the special r e p o r t s such as the cost of r e b u i l d i n g the new f i f t h green or the new seventh tee . List all of the m a t e r i a l s and their costs and give an approximate date as to when the proposed p r o j e c t s w i l l be c o m p l e t e d . S o m e t i m e s it is good to submit a f e w drawings of the new proposed holes to give the m e m b e r s something to d i s c u s s . The f i r s t page of your budget should be composed of n past and p r e s e n t " . S u m m a r i z e the past season and r e v i e w with the m e m b e r s just what happened and r e m i n d them how you had to go over your budget because of the unf o r e s e e n p r o j e c t s they had you do and then p r e s e n t to them what you have planned f o r the present season. The next page of the budget should be devoted to the total listed costs that a r e in the budget. L i s t everything and make it c l e a r , then add up all the columns so that there a r e n o q u e s t i o n s l e f t unans w e r e d . I t i s a l w a y s g o o d to have an E m p l o y e e Evaluation section where you can list each of your f u l l time e m p l o y e e s and give a short h i s t o r y of his s p e c i a l jobs and duties and at this t i m e you can put in any r e c o m - If it is at a l l possible I f e e l that an annual m e e t i n g between the G r e e n s Superintendent and the G r e e n s C o m m i t t e e is i m p o r t a n t to discuss the budget i n f u l l .
