Some Superintendents would probably w e l c o m e a f i r e , j u s t to get r i d of the c o l d , b r e e z y , o u t - o f - d a t e shack r e f e r r e d to as a m a i n t e n a n c e b u i l d i n g . A c t u a l l y a lot of t h e s e shops a r e nothing but a f i r e t r a p . T h e n the S u p e r i n t e n d e n t w o u l d p r o b a b l y get a new m a i n t e n a n c e b u i l d i n g . But w h a t if t h i s f i r e h a p p e n e d d u r i n g the busy s e a s o n , t a k i n g a l l the v i t a l e q u i p m e n t n e e d e d t o k e e p the c o u r s e in s h a p e . S o m e e q u i p m e n t can be o b t a i n e d the next day f r o m the d e a l e r s , but s o m e has to be o r d e r e d and it m i g h t be a w e e k o r m o r e b e f o r e it can be p u r c h a s e d . I n s u r a n c e w i l l buy a new b u i l d i n g and e q u i p m e n t , but is the i n s u r a n c e up to date ? If the e q u i p m e n t i s n ' t n e w , you u s u a l l y get a d e p r e c i a t i o n p r i c e NEW E N G L A N D m e a n i n g the c l u b has to m a k e up the d i f f e r e n c e in c o s t . W h a t p r e c a u t i o n s can be t a k e n to a v o i d the c o s t l y d a m a g e of a f i r e ? I b e l i e v e that a shop should be kept in r e a s o n a b l y neat o r d e r at a l l t i m e s . I t ' s h a r d to k e e p a shop p i c k e d up d u r i n g the b u s y s e a s o n , but if e v e r y t h i n g has a c e r t a i n p l a c e to be k e p t , it h e l p s the m e n to know w h e r e to put it and then f i n d it again. Gas and o i l a r e the b i g g e s t s o u r c e s of fire. T h e s e should be kept a w a y f r o m old r a g s and s o u r c e s of s p a r k s such as w e l d i n g equipment, etc. T h e m e n w o r k i n g on the c o u r s e should be i n s t r u c t e d that no s m o k i n g i s a l l o w e d on o r n e a r gas and f u e l s u p p l i e s . E v e r y c o u r s e m a i n t e n a n c e b u i l d i n g should h a v e a f i r e e x t i n g u i s h e r in s o m e e a s i l y a c c e s s i b l e s p o t . So that w h e n n e e d e d , a p e r son n e e d not k i l l h i m s e l f o b t a i n i n g i t . I found a 10 l b . d r y f o a m t y p e e x t i n g u i s h e r w o r k s v e r y w e l l on m o s t a l l t y p e s of f i r e . W e had s o m e t r a c t o r w i r i n g s t a r t to burn this y e a r and the f o a m did a v e r y q u i c k j o b of putting out the f i r e . T h i s t y p e of e x t i n g u i s h e r l e a v e s a w h i t e dust on e v e r y t h i n g it t o u c h e s , but t h i s can be e a s i l y b r u s h e d off w i t h no d a m a g e to the e q u i p m e n t . T h e e x t i n g u i s h e r d o e s h a v e to be r e c h a r g e d a f t e r each use . If the S u p e r i n t e n d e n t t a k e s 5 m i n u t e s , a c o u p l e of t i m e s a y e a r , i n s t r u c t i n g the p e r s o n n e l in how t o use the f i r e e x t i n g u i s h e r , it c o u l d w e l l s a v e a shop, e q u i p m e n t , and p o s s i b l y a l i f e . H o w e v e r , a f i r e e x t i n g u i s h e r is r e a l l y o n l y a t e m p o r a r y h e l p , in m o s t c a s e s the f i r e d e p a r t m e n t should be c a l l e d .
