o v e r g r e e n s a n d t e e s by f r e q u e n t m o v e m e n t of
tee m a r k e r s and cups, with the c o m m e n c e m e n t
of h a r d f r o s t s t h i s b e c o m e s i m p o s s i b l e a n d
w e a r a n d i n j u r y a r e c o n c e n t r a t e d on p a r t i c u l a r
areas .

m a y i n j u r e the u n d e r g r o u n d p l a n t p a r t s by a
h e a v i n g of the s o i l , m u c h m o r e s e r i o u s r o o t
injury results from traffic over partially thawed
t u r f . In s u c h c o n d i t i o n s w a l k i n g on t h e t u r f
causes a shearing action as the soft, u n f r o z e n
s u r f a c e m o v e s a c r o s s the f r o z e n s u b s u r f a c e . At
the s a m e t i m e s o i l s t r u c t u r e of t h e p l a y i n g
a r e a s m a y be i m p a i r e d by c o m p a c t i o n a n d
a c t u a l p u d d l i n g , r e s u l t i n g in p o o r a e r a t i o n and
drainage.
Snow c o v e r w i l l h e l p to p r o t e c t g r a s s
p l a n t s f r o m f u r t h e r f r o s t i n j u r y , but p l a n t s
p r e v i o u s l y i n j u r e d o r s u b j e c t e d to u n f a v o r a b l e
s o i l c o n d i t i o n s a r e l e s s a b l e to w i t h s t a n d the
new h a z a r d s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h p r o l o n g e d snow
cover; namely, fungal disease and suffocation.
Injured aerial tissues provide ideal infection
s i t e s f o r the "snow m o l d s " w h i c h m a y k i l l c o m pletely plants already weakened. Under packed
snow o r i c e s h e e t s c o m p a c t e d o r p u d d l e d a r e a s
w i t h p o o r a e r a t i o n and d r a i n a g e b e c o m e d e f i c i e n t in o x y g e n r e s u l t i n g in a s p h y x i a t i o n of the
grass plants.
The late autumn and winter m o n t h s p r e s e n t the golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w i t h a
c r i t i c a l p e r i o d d u r i n g w h i c h he m u s t k e e p t u r f
i n j u r y to a m i n i m u m o r s u f f e r the c o n s e q u e n c e s
of slow a n d i r r e g u l a r g r o w t h r e c o v e r y on the
c o u r s e the following spring.
P r e v e n t i o n of
w i n t e r i n j u r y d e p e n d s on t h e a d r o i t n e s s of the
s u p e r i n t e n d e n t , but a l s o l a r g e l y on t h e c o o p e r a t i o n of the m e m b e r s in r e c o g n i z i n g t h a t s e v e r e

retain several key m e n all year round. When

He w a s o n e of t h e e n t h u s i a s t i c f o u n d e r s
a n d a n e a r l y p r e s i d e n t of t h e f i r s t A s s o c i a t i o n
of Golf C o u r s e G r e e n k e e p e r s (now S u p e r i n t e n d e n t s ) in the U S A .
He w a s s e l e c t e d by the A r m y E n g i n e e r s
a s t h e i r N o r t h e a s t a g r o n o m i s t on t h e s o i l s and
c o n s t r u c t i o n of t h e a i r p o r t s in t h i s a r e a . H i s
c l u b g r a n t e d h i m a l e a v e of a b s e n c e a n d h e l d
his job open for his r e t u r n .
He w a s o n e of t h e f i r s t S u p e r i n t e n d e n t s to
have his club vote him and his family a nond u e s p a y i n g m e m b e r of the c l u b a n d w i t h a l l
privileges and t o u r n a m e n t s .
H e w a s t e c h n i c a l a d v i s o r to the l a t e E d d i e
C o l l i n s at the R e d Sox F i e l d a n d b r o u g h t t h a t
f i e l d into n a t i o n a l r e p u t a t i o n a s t h e b e s t in t h e
American League.
