It s e e m s a s e a c h y e a r g o e s b y t h a t t h e r e a r e n e w a d v a n c e s in turf m a n a g e m e n t m a k i n g our job m o r e technical and c o m p l e x . This is p r o g r e s s a n d t h e w a y it s h o u l d b e . T h e d e m a n d s of t h e g a m e a r e g r e a t e r , t h e m e m b e r s e x p e c t m o r e f o r t h e i r d o l l a r . Up t o a f e w y e a r s a g o a m e m b e r e x p e c t e d only good t e e s and g r e e n s , now the f a i r w a y and rough h a v e to be lush too, the f a i r w a y cut at a l m o s t putting g r e e n height. A n u m b e r of c l u b s i n o u r a r e a h a v e h a d t o go into a f u n g i c i d e s p r a y i n g p r o g r a m on the f a i r w a y s . Cutting f a i r w a y s at between 1/2 and 3 / 4 inches or l e s s is r e q u i r i n g m o r e w a t e r , f e r t i lizer, and a p r o g r a m almost as demanding as t a k i n g c a r e of t h e g r e e n s . W h e r e w i l l t h i s a l l end ? Fortunately our equipment manufacturers, irrigation consultants, schools and universities a r e t a k i n g l a r g e s t r i d e s t o t r y to h e l p t h e S u p e r intendent. The Superintendent also has played a l a r g e p a r t i n t h e i n n o v a t i o n of n e w e q u i p m e n t . A n u m b e r of y e a r s a g o , s u c h i t e m s a s the t o p d r e s s e r , matting machine, automatic i r r i gation s y s t e m , growth inhibitors w e r e unheard o f . W e m u s t k e e p u p to d a t e b y a t t e n d i n g a n d s u p p o r t i n g o u r l o c a l a n d n a t i o n a l a s s o c i a t i o n , by a t t e n d i n g all conferences. These are for our benefit. As our profession does a d v a n c e and become m o r e technical, perhaps we should help our m e m b e r s see that this change is taking place. The clubs that I a m familiar with are demanding m o r e intensive c a r e on the entire c o u r s e ; h o w e v e r , t h e y a r e not i n t e r e s t e d in the Superintendent's p r o b l e m s in p r o v i d i n g this e x t r a " g r o o m i n g " o n t h e c o u r s e . In o r d e r to r e c e i v e b u d g e t s a d e q u a t e to . m a i n t a i n the c o u r s e in the m a n n e r the m e m b e r s want, and r e s p e c t and c r e d i t f o r o u r p r o f e s s i o n a l k n o w l e d g e ; p e r h a p s it s h o u l d b e p a r t of o u r j o b to h e l p t h e m r e a l i z e t h e i m p o r t a n c e a n d c o m p l e x i t y of o u r j o b . T h a t w e a r e a m a j o r p a r t of t h e " p r o f e s s i o n a l " t e a m — pro, m a n a g e r , Superintendent - that keeps their club o p e r a t i n g . We a r e not just h i r e d g a r d e n e r s a n d s h o u l d n o t b e t r e a t e d a s s u c h . H o w m a n y of you have m a d e a decision r e g a r d i n g the m a i n t e n a n c e of y o u r c o u r s e b a s e d o n y o u r k n o w l e d g e and e x p e r i e n c e in t h i s f i e l d only to h a v e y o u r p l a n s t h w a r t e d b y a m e m b e r w h o i n s i s t s t h a t it m u s t be done his w a y although he h a s no u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e s i t u a t i o n ?
