T h e cool moist w e a t h e r n o r m a l l y experienced d u r i n g t h e f a l l m o n t h s is ideal f o r g e r m i n a t i o n a n d s t u r d y g r o w t h of the g r a s s seedlings. By t h e t i m e s u m m e r drought and the encroachment of w e e d s occur, t h e t u r f should be well established and in f a r b e t t e r condition t h a n s p r i n g seedings to e n d u r e adversity. Preparation of the Seed Bed I t is highly essential t h a t t h e seed bed be i m p r o v e d prior to p l a n t i n g , since it is b o t h difficult a n d expensive to att e m p t soil i m p r o v e m e n t a f t e r t u r f is established. T h e a r e a should be exa m i n e d f o r evidence of poor d r a i n a g e e i t h e r a t t h e s u r f a c e or in t h e sub-soil. Soils which a r e chronically soggy will r e q u i r e t h e installation of a g r i c u l t u r a l tile d r a i n a g e . Soils which a r e m e r e l y h e a v y in t e x t u r e and t h e r e f o r e drain slowly, m a y be c o r r e c t e d by t h e incorp o r a t i o n of organic m a t t e r a n d lime d u r i n g seed bed p r e p a r a t i o n . On t h e o t h e r hand, lawn a r e a s located on light s a n d y or shaley soils will be g r e a t l y benefited b y t r e a t m e n t to increase t h e i r w a t e r holding capacities. The i n c o r p o r a tion of m o d e r a t e a m o u n t s of s p e n t m u s h - r o o m soil or c o m p o s t c o n t a i n i n g s u b s t a n t i a l p o r t i o n s of both clay and o r g a n i c m a t t e r , is t h e most convenient m e a n s of i m p r o v i n g such soils. Organic Matter N e a r l y all of t h e soils in this region a r e deficient in h u m u s , and, t h e r e f o r e , will be i m p r o v e d f o r t h e g r o w t h of g r a s s e s by t h e i n c o r p o r a t i o n of organic m a t t e r of suitable t y p e . Excavated soils a r e p a r t i c u l a r l y poor in h u m u s , and l a r g e r a m o u n t s of organic m a t t e r will be n e e d e d t h a n is n e c e s s a r y f o r ordin a r y soils. Well r o t t e d m a n u r e and cultivated p e a t or h u m u s , a r e p r e f e r r e d sources of organic m a t t e r f o r lawn soil improvement. The thorough incorporation of 1 to 2 p o u n d s of such m a t e r i a l s on each s q u a r e f o o t of s u r f a c e , will be a d e q u a t e provided it is t h o r o u g h l y mixed with t h e u p p e r 4 or 5 inches of soil. Liming to Correct Soil Acidity C o n t r a r y to p o p u l a r belief, s t r o n g l y acid soils a r e u n d e s i r a b l e f o r lawns. T u r f on such soils suffers severely f r o m d r o u g h t in s u m m e r and is u n a b l e to resist a t t a c k s of diseases and insects, and f a i l s to r e s p o n d p r o p e r l y to f e r t i l i zation. Soil acidity is c o r r e c t e d by t h e addition of either h y d r a t e d lime or finely g r o u n d limestone. The a m o u n t of lime r e q u i r e d d e p e n d s on t h e p r e s e n t d e g r e e of soil acidity and t h e f o r m of lime. I n g e n e r a l , 50 p o u n d s of h y d r a t e d lime or 75 p o u n d s of g r o u n d limestone f o r each 1,000 s q u a r e f e e t of s u r f a c e will be a d e q u a t e . T h o r o u g h incorporation of lime with t h e u p p e r f e w inches of soil is desirable. Fertilizer In g e n e r a l , t h e m o r e valuable t u r f grasses t h r i v e on f a i r l y f e r t i l e soils a n d a r e able to compete m o r e s u c c e s s f u l l y with w e e d s u n d e r these conditions. Thia' is t r u e even f o r those g r a s s e s which a r e s o m e w h a t t o l e r a n t of low soil f e r t i l i t y . T h e i n c o r p o r a t i o n of 20 to 30 p o u n d s of a complete commercial f e r t i l i z e r prior to seeding t h e new lawn, will e n s u r e a p r o p e r supply of p l a n t food. In g e n e r a l , a f e r t i l i z e r which a n a l y z e s api>roxim 0+ ' :i ly 5% n i t r o g e n , 1 0 % phosphoric acid, a n d 5 % potash, will Drove suitable i'or most t y p e s of soil. W h e r e v e r e x t r e m e l y i n f e r t i l e sub-soils and e x c a v a t e d material a r e exposed, t h e q u a n t i t y of f e r t i l i z e r m a y be increased. Uniform d i s t r i b u t i o n of f e r t i l i z e r is essentia] since m o v e m e n t in t h e soil is downward and n o t lateral. F o r convenience, t h e organic m a t t e r , Time, and f e r t i l i z e r may all be i n c o r p o r a t e d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y in t h e seed bed. Choosing Lawn Grasses Cheap lawn seed m i x t u r e s a r e a common source of f a i l u r e , since t h e pred o m i n a t i n g species included do n o t end u r e r e g u l a r mowing. The N e w J e r s e y A g r i c u l t u r a l E x p e r i m e n t S t a t i o n has devised f o u r lawn seed f o r m u l a s which have p r o v e n s a t i s f a c t o r y u n d e r condit i o n s in this region. N e w J e r s e y lawn m i x t u r e No. 1 is suited f o r soils of a v e r a g e f e r t i l i t y , m i x t u r e No. 2 is especially designed f o r closely mowed lawns, m i x t u r e No. 3 f o r shaded a r e a s , and m i x t u r e No. 4 f o r poor, shaley, sandy, or clay soils, and f o r t e r r a c e d slopes. A l a r g e n u m b e r of commercial seed houses a n d r e t a i l seed dealers a r e now c a r r y i n g t h e s e New J e r s e y mixt u r e s in stock. P u r e seedings of these g r a s s e s will r e q u i r e approxim a t e l y 10 p o u n d s of Chewing's F e s c u e seed f o r each 1,000 s q u a r e f e e t , 2 p o u n d s of Velvet b e n t , and 6 p o u n d s of K e n t u c k y bluegrass. Seeding A p p r o x i m a t e l y 4 p o u n d s of a goodq u a l i t y seed m i x t u r e a r e sufficient f o r p l a n t i n g 1,000 s q u a r e f e e t of lawn. U n i f o r m d i s t r i b u t i o n of the seed is highly essential. A suitable m e t h o d of p l a n t i n g consists of dividing t h e seed into 2 lots, one of which is evenly s p r e a d in a N o r t h - S o u t h direction, and the o t h e r in an E a s t - W e s t direction, over t h e same a r e a . T h e seed should be lightly r a k e d into t h e soil to a d e p t h n o t g r e a t e r t h a n 1-8 to 3-16 of an inch, and t h e p l a n t e d a r e a lightly rolled. Care of New Lawns If t h e newly seeded a r e a is n o t k e p t m o d e r a t e l y moist by n a t u r a l r a i n f a l l f o r several weeks f o l l o w i n g planting, it will be n e c e s s a r y to r e s o r t to w a t e r i n g in order to p r e v e n t i n j u r y f r o m d r o u g h t . Artificial w a t e r i n g m u s t be in t h e f o r m of a light mist-like s p r a y to avoid f o r m a t i o n of a h a r d c r u s t on t h e soil surface. When moisture shortage n e c e s s i t a t e s w a t e r i n g , it is desirable to m o i s t e n t h e soil t h o r o u g h l y to a depth of at least 4 inches, to e n s u r e a g a i n s t r a p i d d r y i n g of t h e s u r f a c e soil. Y o u n g t u r f should be mowed no closer t h a n 1 1-2 inches to p e r m i t vigorous r o o t development. F r e q u e n t mowing is n o t h a r m f u l , provided t h e p r o p e r h e i g h t is m a i n t a i n e d . Newly p l a n t e d grass requires protection f r o m trampi n g f o r several m o n t h s , since t h e m o r e v a l u a b l e p e r m a n e n t grasses g r o w relatively slowly in t h e earlier stages of dev e l o p m e n t . On well p r e p a r e d seed beds, such g r a s s e s soon r o o t t h o r o u g h l y and show g r e a t aggressiveness a f t e r becoming established. SUCCESSFUL SHADED LAWNS AREAS ON H o w a r d B. S p r a g u e , A g r o n o m i s t New J e r s e y Agri. Exp. Sta. The s u c c e s s f u l e s t a b l i s h m e n t of t u r f on shaded a r e a s n e c e s s i t a t e s the use of shade t o l e r a n t grasses, t h e i m p r o v e m e n t of soil conditions to m e e t g r o w t h req u i r e m e n t s , and seeding a t a seasonable t i m e of t h e y e a r . All g r a s s e s r e q u i r e some sunlight daily f o r s a t i s f a c t o r y g r o w t h , a l t h o u g h c e r t a i n species a r e considerably more t o l e r a n t of limited light t h a n others. W h e r e t u r f is desired on densely shaded areas, judicious p r u n i n g of t h e t r e e s will f r e q u e n t l y p e r m i t t h e e n t r a n c e of sufficient sunshine, w i t h o u t i n j u r y to t h e b e a u t y or h e a l t h of t h e trees. The most f a v o r a b l e season f o r p l a n t ing shaded a r e a s is A u g u s t 15 to Octob e r 15. This is p a r t i c u l a r l y t r u e w h e r e shade is caused by deciduous u-ees, since t h e y o u n g g r a s s p l a n t s c o n t i n u e g r o w t h a f t e r leaf fall, and become well established b e f o r e n e w t r e e leaves a r e p r o d u c e d t h e following spring. Early s p r i n g seedings m a y also prove successf u l on shaded locations provided soil conditions a r e s a t i s f a c t o r y a n d the shade is n o t too dense. The soil f o r the shaded lawn m u s t have a d e q u a t e d r a i n a g e , since t h e t u r f s u f f e r s f r o m o u t b r e a k s of disease on soggy soils which a r e poorly lighted. A g r i c u l t u r a l tile d r a i n s m a y be installed to r e m o v e excess soil water, if n a t u r a l d r a i n a g e is n o t a d e q u a t e . E x cessive soil acidity should be c o r r e c t e d by t h e use of lime and organic m a t t e r , such as well r o t t e d m a n u r e or cultivated p e a t , t h o r o u g h l y i n c o r p o r a t e d with t h e u p p e r f e w inches to improve soil s t r u c t u r e . In addition, 20 to 30 p o u n d s of a complete f e r t i l i z e r should be applied p e r 1,000 s q u a r e f e e t in p r e p a r a t i o n of t h e seed bed p r i o r to seeding.
