T h r e e years, some $800,000, and countless sleepless nights later, R o n Milenski drew in a deep b r e a t h and delivered what p r o b a b l y is the longest sigh of relief on record. Why? Because the face-lift j o b on the International Golf Club's worldwideacclaimed golf course had been c o m pleted. At long last, R o n had tamed the "tiger". " O h , we still have the tiger tees and we're still the longest golf course in the world (the stretched-out distance remains at 8,325 yards f r o m those devilish driving areas)," R o n disclosed. Page 3 The Super Speaks Out This month's question: With the snow mold season just around the corner and the introduction of winter covers for greens and tees in full sway, how do you cope with the problem and what effect, if any, do covers have on snow mold? Roger Brink, Indian Ridge Country Club: "I hate to say it, but snow mold hasn't been much of a problem for me. However, I should add that this is only my second year at Indian Ridge, so I have reservations about the future. "This is not to say I'm not aware of taking precautions to prevent snow mold and curb its intensity in the few spots where it pops up around here. I should add that I'm still using up products that were here when 1 started at Indian Ridge. "My program is to make an application in late fall and follow it up with another when and if it thaws in any of the winter months. Last January the weather behaved in a manner where it warmed up and I was able to do some work outdoors. "One interesting development may interest other superintendents. There was ice buildup on some of my greens and tees. I was able to chop up ice where the sun was a warming factor?T>ut had»to let the ice stay put in shaded areas. The surprising result goes against the grain, since the parts of tees and greens where the ice remained looked better than the non-ice areas at wake-up time in the spring. "I've have no experience with covers here but might use one or whatever in problem situations. But to tell the truth, I'm not so sure that covers just might entice snow mold. I won't find out till I use them." Phil Schultz, Oak Hill Country Club: "My troubles with snow mold aren't that acute, but I have a program to control it anyway. It's late November at this moment and I'm applying a spray of "Calo-clor" to my greens. If possible, I'll also use PMAS on some approaches and tees. "I've been using covers on selected greens and tees for the last six or seven years. In most cases, they are put down in potential high-wind areas. Presently, there are seven greens covered, so late-season play means temporary greens in those situations. "Those covered greens never have been seriously affected by snow mold. Therefore, I'd say covers are a big help. They don't prevent ice damage; nothing does. However, they haven't shown any signs of encouraging snow mold. "For the most part, then, my snow mold treatment program is working and I'm sold on covers. If it were financially possible, I'd have covers on all my greens and tees." Bruce Packard, Stockbridge Golf Club: "If the subject is snow mold, then I'm the guy to talk to. Our course was devastated by snow mold this season which happened to be my first here. "Therefore, as far as Stockbridge is concerned, 1 have had no experience with treatment to combat snow mold. This is my maiden voyage here and I'm relying on the experience of other superintendents in the Berkshires to lean on before I get a personal handle on the problem. "1 do know what not to use. Although there was no log of what went into the maintenance methods here before I arrived last April, I do know that PCNB was used to fight snow mold and it didn't work. "Instead, I'm using "Calo-gran" after discussion with the veteran superintendents in the area. Most of them are sold on it, so I'm giving it a try. "I came here after six years at the Amherst Golf Club where I had a pretty good green chairman for a couple of those years—(Dr.) Joe Troll. We had pink snow mold there, but kept it under control. " H o w e v e r , the conditions in the Berkshires are much different. We have a lot of cold, moist days in September. Therefore, it's common to have snow mold show up as early as late fall. "My treatments began the first of October and I was planning to get in with more applications before some serious winter set in around the first of December. "How bad was the snow mold here in my first year? Well, it wasn't until our July 4th tournament that we got it under control. But snow mold was just part of my problems. The course was under water six times from river flooding, so I spent a lot of my time in hip boots. But that's another story. Ask me about it sometime." Passios, Certified Golf Course Superintendent, is completing his first full year as a Director with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and beginning his second nomination for that post in 1991. Charlie's continuous involvement in local and national associations has always been there for "that's the type of person I am, either as an active member or as an office holder". To go the extra mile and give the added effort required, Charlie recognizes it takes dedication, the basic desire to serve, and team work to achieve any measure of success. He represents a man who has successfully balanced his career, family, and commitment to local associations and GCSAA through proper organization and planning with little wasted motion. A native of Lunenburg, Massachusetts, he now resides in M a r s t o n Mills, Massachusetts with wife Fran, son Daniel, and daughter Sara. Having grown up in an educational environment, he was taught the value and strength of what an education can do for you, that it affords the opportunity to help others in return. We then can see that Charlie's background is a strong part of his motivation to serve in association business. Passios's commitment to education and association belongings date from 1977. In the fourteen year time span he has held offices in both the Cape Cod Turf Managers Association and New England Golf Course Superintendents Association. As recent Past President of the Cape Cod Association and current Vice President of the New England Association, he has been strongly supportive of environmental issues as the recently completed Cape Cod Groundwater Study shows. Further, his leadership has provided for both associations to play a large role in the newly formed Massachusetts Green Industry Council. Charles T. Passios', CGCS, commitment to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, is made with the same determination and pride that brought him to the golf course superintendent profession. These are several reasons that the G C S A N E is proud to support Mr. Passios in his nomination for Director of GCSAA. A TTENTION MEMBERS In your dues statement for 1991 there will be a short questionnaire to help us update our Membership Directory and mailing lists. Please fill this out and return by March 1, 1991. The Magovern Company carries a wide variety of turf equipment lines to fully serve the needs of golf course's, municipalities, colleges, and l a n d s c a p e r s . The line includes, but is not limited to, Jacobsen, C u s h m a n / R y a n , National, Smithco. Turfco, and Kubota tractors. A complete parts and service department are also an important part of the success of the Magovern Company. Greenway Irrigation Co. Greenway Irrigation Co., started in 1977, is operated by owners Steve Murphy, in charge of sales, and John Murphy, in charge of installations. The company has completed numerous conversion jobs, manual to automatic, as well as several complete 18-hole installations. Greenway tries to fill the void between the large irrigation contractor and the home owner installer. Wiring and pipe pulling are specialties of the company from "looping greens" to wiring fairways. Recently, Greenway Irrigation purchased a "Rock" on "Frost" trencher to install drainage in frozen ground. The idea is to drain wet muck areas that can't be driven over with equipment in season. When the ground is frozen, the trencher and loader can make short work of a near impossible in-season job. Greenway in the 1990's will stay small to better serve the individual superintendent's needs.
