R o y Mackintosh, T w i n Hills Count r y C l u b : " W e at T w i n Hills are a w a r e of the spikeless, uh, revolution more than m o s t clubs. W e ' v e had golf committee meetings on the subject and we've even got c o m m i t m e n t s to go spikeless f r o m s o m e of our officials. " F o r example, our president wears t h e m a s do o u r g r e e n c h a i r m a n a n d c l u b treasurer. Of course, I have them as part of m y g o l f i n g w a r d r o b e , a n d I d o n ' t s e e a n y adverse difference in m y g a m e since I m a d e the switch. " H o w e v e r , m a k i n g a drastic or c o m p l e t e c h a n g e o v e r is o u t of t h e question. T h e r e are a l w a y s going to be people opposed to c h a n g e of a n y n a t u r e . Therefore, the only clubs with 1 0 0 percent spikeless mentality will b e those that ban the conventional spiked shoes. " I o f t e n t h i n k of t h e b o d y english p l a y ers u s e a t o u r club - a n d at all clubs f o r that matter. Y o u k n o w t h e scene. T h e s w i n g or putt is followed b y a dig into t h e t u r f that would make any superintendent scream for mercy. So, y o u wonder how the turf feels under those circumstances. " W e h a v e m a d e s u g g e s t i o n s to c h a n g e f r o m s p i k e d t o s p i k e l e s s to t h o s e p l a y e r s w h o p e r f o r m those little tricks on t h e greens. B u t they are just that, suggestions. To come right out a n d expect that our club will force each m e m b e r to go spikeless is beyond reason, at least at this point in the game. " W h a t w e a r e g o i n g t o n e e d if s p i k e l e s s is to t a k e a hold on golfers is a leadership group that promotes the change. Certainly, t u r f p e o p l e l i k e m y s e l f s h o u l d h a v e a n obligation to influence committees and the like to t a k e a second look at the d a m a g e spiked shoes cause. Don Hearn Weston Golf Club T o u r , a l t h o u g h t h a t ' s too m u c h to hope for. F u n n y , though, w e r e n ' t m o s t of the complaints at the P G A Championship centered around spike marks? "Regardless, the hopes for a spikeless golf w o r l d lie on t h e d e m a n d to m a k e a c h a n g e f r o m spiked to spikeless m a n d a tory. T h e r e ' s no doubt spikeless is m u c h e a s i e r on t h e turf. W h e n a n d if c o u n t r y club a n d golf course m e m b e r s c h a m p i o n the cause are the two provisions standing between a complete changeover f r o m spiked to spikeless." Bob Piantedosi, Oakley Country C l u b : " Y o u might say that I've been in the spikeless shoe business for the past two seasons. A t least I've distributed spikeless cleats t o m e m b e r s of m y c l u b b o a r d of directors, a n d I h a v e to r e p o r t t h a t s o m e w e r e p u t to use a n d others w e r e not. So, I'd s a y that, at least at O a k l e y , school's still out on the issue. " I h a v e to admit t h a t Oakley, w i t h its u p a n d d o w n t o p o g r a p h y , is k i n d of a t e s t y place for a spikeless experiment. I've put t h e m on, w a l k e d a r o u n d t h e course, a n d found that they are easier on m y feet. It a l s o a p p e a r s t h a t u s i n g t h e m i n s t e a d of spiked shoes should be beneficial to the turf. " A s f a r as promoting their use, I think I've shown where I stand b y m y distribut i o n of s p i k e l e s s cleats, a n d o n a p e r s i s t e n t level at that. So far, I've h a d mixed reviews from those members who wore them. " W h i c h brings u s to the p r i m e factor in h a v i n g t h e m accepted a n d actually in place a s the p l a y i n g c l e a t o f t h e f u t u r e . T h a t ' s having enough supportive response from golfers w h o see that spikeless shoes are f a r less d a m a g i n g to greens t h a n the spiked kind. If the golfer can see that the green looks b e t t e r a n d p u t t s b e t t e r b e c a u s e of c h a n g i n g to spikeless, t h e r e ' s a possibility t h a t b a n n i n g of conventional shoes will become universal. " C e r t a i n l y w i t h t h e n u m b e r of r o u n d s increasing and our greens not getting any bigger, t h e r e ' s r e a s o n to believe the spikeless movement will get a fair chance to a d v a n c e to t h e p o i n t w h e r e s p i k e d s h o e s are considered a t h i n g of the p a s t . " Don Hearn, Weston Golf Club: "My p a r t i n t h e e n d o r s e m e n t of s p i k e l e s s g o l f shoes is evident in a t t e m p t s to i n f l u e n c e m e m b e r s o n p r a c t i c a l e f f e c t s of t h e i r u s e . "Personally, I can see a dramatic difference in the a p p e a r a n c e a n d health of t h e turf when spikeless shoes are worn. H o w ever, I have strong reservations about the spikeless trend becoming mandatory. " F o r one thing, w e m u s t h a v e leadership in the a t t e m p t to convince p l a y e r s that spikeless has more advantages t h a n disadvantages. S u r e , w e ' v e all h e a r d t h e stories of people slipping while w e a r i n g spikeless shoes, but for that matter, people in conventional spiked shoes h a v e to w a t c h out w h e n they w a l k on concrete. "Anyway, there won't be a far-reaching change unless the P G A Tour players give spikeless s h o e s a chance. A f t e r all, t h e y a r e t h e idols of o u r a m a t e u r g o l f e r s , a n d w h a t y o u see in a t o u r event is w h a t y o u u s u a l l y see at a club t o u r n e y a s f a r as e q u i p m e n t , clothes, a n d t h e l i k e go. "Oh, and another thing, m a n y golfers are under the impression that changing to spikeless m e a n s b u y i n g n e w golf shoes. M a y b e w e can get out the message t h a t spikeless cleats are available at only a f e w dollars a set. " I n the end, though, w e (turf people) a r e the ones w h o h a v e to p r o m o t e the spikeless move. We, the supers, should m a k e a statement by being 1 0 0 percent involved in w e a r i n g spikeless shoes. If anyone can man the GCSANE booth at that time, please contact Chip Brearley at 508-584-6568. On September 9 & 10, GCSANE Secretary Kevin Osgood attended the GCSAA Chapter Relations Meeting at the Lawrence, Kansas headquarters. He will report the results of the meeting in an article in the November Newsletter. A number of golf courses in eastern Mass. were used as sites of a special goose hunting season September 5-15. Wampatuck C.C. in Canton reduced its resident flock by 13 in a matter of minutes, according to Golf Course Superintendent Ed Eardley, who was quoted in several newspapers. Daryn Brown of Braintree Municipal G.C. was also quoted in the press regarding the goose problem. However, he chose the pacifistic approach, letting his 4-legged live-in, Tyler, chase the birds off.
