Francis, o n e o f t h e p a t r i a r c h s o f t h e p r o f e s s i o n , t o o k E d w a r d u n d e r his w i n g a n d his p r o t e g e p r o f i t e d f r o m t h e associat i o n t h r o u g h a succession o f head j o b s at O a k Hill, W e s t m i n s t e r , a n d t h e N a s h u a C o u n t r y Club. Then, w h e n Dave was ready t o p u t his h a n d i n t o t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t ' s c o o k i e jar, Francis w a s t h e r e t o g i v e h i m and fellow neophyte, Bert Frederick, a b i g b o o s t w h i l e t h e y t o o k basic t r a i n i n g at the Vesper Country Club. T h a t w a s in 1959, just b e f o r e D a v e w e n t d e e p w i t h his c a r e e r b y p u t t i n g t o g e t h e r a golf course f r o m scratch. T h e n e x t y e a r h e t o o k o v e r at t h e C r y s t a l Springs l a y o u t in H a v e r h i l l w h e r e a g r o c e r f r o m Salem, N . H . b y t h e lyrical n a m e o f G e o r g e Gelt had parlayed a matching grant f r o m t h e federal g o v e r n m e n t into a g r o w i n g golf enterprise. " T h o s e w e r e interesting years for me," Clement told. " T h e year before I g o t t o C r y s t a l Springs, R o n K i r k m a n had b u i l t t h e f r o n t nine.
