After starting out at just a dollar-an-hour,
Bave Clement piarsi a comfortable retirement

weed-whacker, Dave C l e m e n t learned
t h e cycle o f w o r k - a n d - r e w a r d o n t h e golf
c o u r s e t h a t w o u l d d r i v e his e n t i r e c a r e e r .

t h e Framingham C o u n t r y C l u b that he
w a s w a l k i n g i n t o r e t i r e m e n t at w h a t h e
called t h e r i g h t t i m e in his life. A t t h a t
t i m e , his a n n u a l salary had p e a k e d at six
figures. Success s t o r y ? Y o u b e t c h a !
C l e m e n t is a n d w a s a grass r o o t s g o l f
c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t . His father, E d w a r d ,
w a s m o l d e d in t h e M a n n y Francis era.
Francis, o n e o f t h e p a t r i a r c h s o f t h e
p r o f e s s i o n , t o o k E d w a r d u n d e r his w i n g
a n d his p r o t e g e p r o f i t e d f r o m t h e associat i o n t h r o u g h a succession o f head j o b s at
O a k Hill, W e s t m i n s t e r , a n d t h e N a s h u a
C o u n t r y Club. Then, w h e n Dave was ready
t o p u t his h a n d i n t o t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t ' s
c o o k i e jar, Francis w a s t h e r e t o g i v e h i m
and fellow neophyte, Bert Frederick, a
b i g b o o s t w h i l e t h e y t o o k basic t r a i n i n g at
the Vesper Country Club.
T h a t w a s in 1959, just b e f o r e D a v e
w e n t d e e p w i t h his c a r e e r b y p u t t i n g

t o g e t h e r a golf course f r o m scratch. T h e
n e x t y e a r h e t o o k o v e r at t h e C r y s t a l
Springs l a y o u t in H a v e r h i l l w h e r e a g r o c e r
f r o m Salem, N . H . b y t h e lyrical n a m e o f
G e o r g e Gelt had parlayed a matching
grant f r o m t h e federal g o v e r n m e n t into
a g r o w i n g golf enterprise.
" T h o s e w e r e interesting years for
me," Clement told. " T h e year before I
g o t t o C r y s t a l Springs, R o n K i r k m a n had
b u i l t t h e f r o n t nine. T h e n , w h e n h e t o o k

"I always had g o o d c o m m u n i c a t i o n
w i t h people," Dave explained h o w he

call f r o m j o e Troll, m y t u r f g u r u at t h e
Stockbridge School. H e t o l d m e t h e
Crestview Country Club (Agawam) was
looking for a superintendent and thought
I s h o u l d apply.
" T h e C r e s t v i e w j o b w a s attractive, b o t h
in t h e m a t t e r o f i m p r o v i n g m y salary status
a n d as a c h a l l e n g e t o m y capabilities,
b e c a u s e it w a s a fairly n e w c o u r s e , " D a v e
c o n t i n u e d . " I s e e m e d t o hit it o f f in an
i n t e r v i e w I had w i t h t h e golf chairman,
K e n B a r u , a n d an a g r e e m e n t w a s s e t in
place. I l i k e d it t h e r e . In fact, I s t a y e d at
C r e s t v i e w f o r 13 years, o r u n t i l Joe w a s
o n t h e h o r n again."
C l e m e n t w a s m a k i n g $ 1 6 - 1 8 , 0 0 0 at
C r e s t v i e w w h e n D r . T r o l l a d v i s e d his s t a r
f o r m e r p u p i l t h a t his a l m a m a t e r has
issued a s u m m o n s . It m e a n t , o f c o u r s e ,
t h a t W o o d s t o c k w a s in t h e m a r k e t f o r a
n e w superintendent. Dave was the
logical c h o i c e f o r an o p e n i n g o f f e r o f
$ 2 4 , 0 0 0 p e r year.
O n e must understand Dave's overview
o f his career, w h i c h w a s set o n an e v e n t u a l
c o u r s e leading t o a r e t i r e m e n t , stuck
s o m e w h e r e b e t w e e n affordable and
lucrative, depending o n h o w t h e planning
t u r n e d o u t . B u t t h a t p a r t w a s easy f o r
D a v e . H i s w i f e , Shirley, t o o k e x p e r t c a r e
of that part of their partnership. W h e n
D a v e says h e c o u l d n ' t h a v e d o n e it
w i t h o u t her, his w o r d s a r e n ' t b l o w i n g in
t h e w i n d . S h i r l e y d e f i n i t e l y has a k e e n
financial h e a d o n h e r s h o u l d e r s .
Nevertheless, the second go-round
at W o o d s t o c k w a s a n o t h e r w i n n e r f o r Dave.
H e endeared himself t o o w n e r s h i p and
m a n a g e m e n t t h e r e in a n o t h e r 13-year h i t c h
t h a t s a w his salary b a l l o o n t o $ 5 0 , 0 0 0 .
" I f i g u r e d W o o d s t o c k w o u l d b e m y final
s t o p , " h e said. " B u t I w a s w r o n g . T h i s t i m e
Bert told m e that the Framingham job was
o p e n a n d t h e y w e r e i n t e r e s t e d in m e . T h a t
w a s in 1994. It w a s a p e r f e c t fit f o r b o t h
p a r t i e s a n d m y s t a r t i n g salary w e n t u p .

your crew for the high golf season?

" T h e r e ' s n o d o u b t t h a t t h e r e exists a
p r e t t y s t r o n g c o m p e t i t i o n f o r help,
especially in t h e case o f t h e g o l f c o u r s e
w h e r e m u c h o f it c o m e s o n a p a r t - t i m e
basis. I ' v e f e l t it h e r e . In fact, n e a r t h e
e n d o f last season I lost t w o o f m y p e o p l e
t o a landscape c o m p a n y that w a s offering
10 t o 12 d o l l a r s an h o u r .
" W e ' r e a 9 - h o l e c o u r s e a n d t h a t gives

m o r e attractive environment than four
blank walls.

" T h e r e ' s also a n o t h e r f a v o r a b l e

t h e y ' r e g o i n g t o b e paid. So, I can pay
t h e m reasonable wages and get t o p - r a t e
returns because t h e i m p o r t a n t part o f o u r
c o n t r a c t s , if y o u w i l l , is t h a t t h e y can play

family) for nothing.
"The retired people don't mind
g e t t i n g u p e a r l y a n d t h e y ' r e usually o n
t h e j o b at 4 : 4 0 a . m . M o s t o f t h e m w o r k
u n t i l late m o r n i n g o r n o o n a n d t h e n
t h e y ' r e o f f f o r t h e g o l f c o u r s e t o play.
T h e teachers, m o s t of t h e m recruited
b y a f r i e n d w h o m 1 play w i t h , a r e in t h e
s a m e s t a t e o f m i n d . In fact, t h e y c o m e in
o n t h e w e e k e n d v e r y early t o m o w
g r e e n s and t h e y ' r e o u t t h e r e a l m o s t
b e f o r e o u r h e a v y play begins.
'Actually, t h i s s y s t e m w a s h a n d e d
d o w n t o us b y Phil Friel, w h o k n e w a
thing o r t h r e e a b o u t retaining g o o d help
a n d k e e p i n g t h e m happy. M y guys a r e a
real loyal g r o u p , plus b e i n g capable o n
t h e j o b . W h e n o n e leaves, t h e r e is
s o m e o n e w a i t i n g t o t a k e his place.
I c o n s i d e r m y s e l f p r e t t y l u c k y in t e r m s
of getting the p a r t - t i m e help w h e n the
c o m p e t i t i o n ' s w a v i n g b i g b u c k s at t h e m . "

'And, t o be honest, that's w h e r e o u r
p e r k s k i c k in. F o r t h e past t w o y e a r s this
a p p r o a c h has b e e n w o r k i n g successfully.
T h a t ' s r e f l e c t e d in t h e f a c t t h a t w e ' v e had
l i t t l e o r n o t u r n o v e r in o u r p a r t - t i m e help.
" T h e m a j o r p e r k , o f c o u r s e , is o f f e r i n g
o u r p e o p l e g o l f p r i v i l e g e s . Frankly, if w e
w e r e n ' t able t o d o this, putting t o g e t h e r a
c r e w for the s u m m e r w o u l d be one
t o u g h j o b f o r m e . T h a t , plus m y p a r t in
t h e e q u a t i o n , o r p r o v i d i n g as pleasant
w o r k i n g c o n d i t i o n s as possible, k e e p s o u r
c r e w h u m m i n g along.

f o u r t h season at C h i c o p e e . His p r i o r
w o r k e x p e r i e n c e includes t h r e e years as
planner in t h e O f f i c e of C o m m u n i t y
D e v o p m e n t f o l l o w e d by t h r e e years as a
j u n i o r engineer f o r t h e C i t y of C h i c o p e e .
D o n ' s e d u c a t i o n includes an associate
o f science degree in landscape o p e r a t i o n s
f r o m t h e Stockbridge School o f A g r i c u l t u r e . H e f o l l o w e d that up w i t h a B.S. in
landscape a r c h i t e c t u r e f r o m UMass in
1991. T h r e e years later he achieved a
m a s t e r ' s degree in landscape a r c h i t e c t u r e
f r o m UMass.

H e is active in t h e A u d u b o n Cooperative

C h i c o p e e Municipal Golf C o u r s e is a
G e o f f r e y C o r n i s h design that w a s b r o u g h t
t o life in 1965. A municipal course, it has
a par o f 71 and plays t o 6 7 4 2 yards f r o m
t h e blue tees. W i t h a slope of 126 and a
rating o f 73.0, it is an excellent t e s t o f golf.
T h e greens, a m i x t u r e of Penncross
and poa, average 6,000 square feet. Tees
and fairways are M e r i o n bluegrass, and
t h e r o u g h is a m i x t u r e of bluegrass and
ryegrass.
