T h e D o n a l d Ross Society, w h i c h has perpetuated the image and w o r k of the f a m e d g o l f c o u r s e a r c h i t e c t , is e x p e c t e d t o g e t i n v o l v e d in p r o m o t i n g t h e b i g e v e n t . T h e r e f o r e much of the golf w o r l d will be w a t c h i n g V e s p e r set t h e stage f o r t h e 2005 O p e n , and L e m m e wants t o make s u r e it w i l l c o m e a w a y w i t h a g r e a t e r a p p r e c i a t i o n o f Ross' d e s i g n i n g m a s t e r y . L e m m e a l w a y s s e e m s t o c a r v e success i n t o his e n d e a v o r s . H i s i n t r o d u c t i o n t o g o l f c a m e as o n e o f five b r o t h e r s w h o w o r k e d o n a n d o f f at T h e B l a n d f o r d C l u b , a n i n e - h o l e c o u r s e in a s m a l l t o w n in t h e foothills of t h e Berkshire mountains. His f a m i l y lived a m i l e a w a y f r o m t h e f o l k s y c l u b w h e r e M i l t Ripley s e r v e d as its s u p e r i n t e n d e n t a n d best player. K e n t t o o k a cue f r o m Milt and sort of t o o k t h e same p a t h t o t h e r e s t o f his p r o f e s s i o n a l life. H e c a u g h t o n t o t h e g a m e fast, p l a y e d o n t h e g o l f t e a m s at G a t e w a y Regional H i g h School and at W e s t f i e l d State C o l l e g e , "Stockbridge was great for me in two respects. I got a chance to play golf for Jack teaman, but more importantly, 1 came under the guidance of Dr. Troll. Kent Lemme Vesper Country Club w h e r e he t h o u g h t c o m p u t e r science w o u l d b e his life's w o r k . It wasn't. A c o u p l e of years later, he t r a n s f e r r e d t o S t o c k b r i d g e S c h o o l t o h o o k o n w i t h Joe Troll a n d t h e rest o f t h e t e a c h i n g staff. T h a t staff also i n c l u d e d Jack L e a m a n , a l e g e n d a r y b a s k e t ball c o a c h at U M a s s . " H e had been t h e head man at Berkshire Hills and he also had t h e same j o b at Taconic w h e n I was n a m e d t o replace him. I guess it's just coincidence, b u t Peter w a s a g o o d g u y t o f o l l o w at T a c o n i c . " L u n d was g o o d , t o o , because he had just pushed t h r o u g h t h e first automatic irrigation s y s t e m at Taconic. ' A n d I had a couple of years o f hoses and sprinklers d o i n g t h e j o b in t h e m i d d l e o f t h e night. B u t o n July 4, 1996, t h e s y s t e m w a s in place and w a t e r i n g w a s a j o y a f t e r t h a t . How do you handle the situation if you're overseeing maintenance at racquet-sports friendly clubs? W e ' r e lucky t h a t w e have heavy soil t o t e n d . " O n t h e o t h e r hand, t h e clay c o u r t s o f f e r a sharp c o n t r a s t in c o n d i t i o n i n g . W e can't s e e m t o give t h e m e n o u g h w a t e r . In _fact, t h e y r e q u i r e m o r e w a t e r t h a n golf -eens. So, t h a t part o f t h e m a i n t e n a n c e is a little mind-boggling. " O f course, t h e maintenance doesn't e n d t h e r e . A n o t h e r i m p o r t a n t part o f t h e p r o c e s s is lining t h e c o u r t s . In this j o b , t h e roles r e v e r s e themselves. T h e clay c o u r t s are lined w i t h a plastic t a p e and pose f e w p r o b l e m s . O n t h e o t h e r hand, t h e grass c o u r t s have t o have t h a t p o w d e r y substance w h e r e shots b r i n g up an o u t b u r s t o f w h i t e . W e ' v e g o n e t o e x t r e m e measures t o facilitate this task. A w h i t e line m a c h i n e handles it. It w a s b o u g h t in L o n d o n at t h e Q u e e n ' s C l u b . It is used e v e r y five o r six days. THE SUPER SPEAKS " L a b o r - w i s e , I ' m f o r t u n a t e t o have g o o d people doing the tennis c o u r t maint e n a n c e . A s a basis, I have o n e p e r s o n f o r t h e grass c o u r t s and a n o t h e r f o r t h e rest o f t h e g r o u n d s . T h e i n d o o r and squash c o u r t s u p k e e p is a m a t t e r o f cleaning t h e m every day. Overall, I'd say t h e ratio o f labor o u t p u t , f r o m t h e golf course t o t h e racquet c o u r t is 8 0 - 2 0 . I d o n ' t t h i n k t h e i n t e r e s t in t h e r a c q u e t s p o r t s is any d i f f e r e n t t h e n it w a s w h e n i first c a m e here. If t h e r e is any adult decline, it's b e e n c o u n t e r e d by a b o o s t in j u n i o r participation. W e w a t e r t h e m e v e r y Sunday night, p e r i o d . T h e Har-Tru c o u r t s g e t a soaking. T h e y ' r e w a t e r e d e v e r y day and e v e r y night u n d e r use o f an a u t o m a t i c irrigation system. So, o n e - h a l f o f t h e c o u r t s love w a t e r and t h e o t h e r c h o k e s o n it. " N a t u r a l l y , t h e grass c o u r t s r e q u i r e m o r e care because o f t h e n a t u r e o f t h e i r respective physical p r o p e r t i e s . W e k e e p t h e c u t o f t h e grass at 3/4", o r a b o u t t h e height o f t h e average fairway. " H o w e v e r , t h e m o s t diligent p a r t o f g e t t i n g t h e m t o w h e r e t h e players w a n t t h e m is rolling. W e roll t h e m as m u c h as w e can. Actually, w e can't roll t h e m e n o u g h . T h e secret b e h i n d a g o o d grass c o u r t is its density. It has t o be h a r d in o r d e r t o c r e a t e an a d e q u a t e b o u n c e . W e use m o r e potassium o n t h e grass c o u r t s t o get t h e m h a r d e r and k e e p t h e m d r y and f i r m . W e reseed t h e m o n c e a year, using a c o m b i n a t i o n o f fescues, poa, and colonial bent. W e p a m p e r t h e m just like w e p a m p e r o u r golf greens. Believe m e , t h e y g e t tender, loving care. " T h e r e are no c o s m e t i c d e m a n d s f r o m players. T h e i r main c o n c e r n is h o w t h e c o u r t s are going t o react f r o m a shot, h o w t h e b o u n c e w i l l f o r m . But, I'd say a g o o d l o o k i n g grass c o u r t w o u l d be o n e t h a t appears off-color. Again, looks d o n ' t c o u n t . " W e have t h e m a i n t e n a n c e o f o u r c o u r t s d o w n t o a f o r m u l a and it s e l d o m changes. This poses s o m e w h a t o f a p r o b l e m along labor lines. T h e j o b b e c o m e s b o r i n g because it means t h e same t h i n g in t h e same order, day a f t e r day. W i t h this in mind, I rotate some m e m b e r s of my c r e w b e t w e e n golf and tennis. It's a m o t i v a t i n g tool for me. " O h , w e also have t h r e e p l a t f o r m tennis c o u r t s . T h e m a i n t e n a n c e isn't as d e m a n d i n g here. H o w e v e r , t h e g a m e is played o u t d o o r s in late fall and w i n t e r w h i c h means s o m e b o d y has t o be t h e r e t o service t h e c o u r t s . But It's all in t h e n a m e o f r a c q u e t s p o r t s . F o r lovers o f t h o s e s p o r t s , this is t h e place t o be and I ' m h e r e t o see t h a t t h e y ' r e e n j o y e d year-round." HEALTH In t h e trl-state area, these pesky insects d o n ' t b e c o m e active until late spring. But w i t h t h e r e c e n t discovery o f l o w levels o f t h e W e s t N i l e virus genetic material in hibernating m o s q u i t o e s collected in F o r t "lotten, Q u e e n s , it m i g h t be w o r t h launching an attack even b e f o r e these m o s q u i t o e s t a k e t h e i r first flight. To p r e v e n t a repeat of last year's o u t break, health officials f r o m N e w York, N e w Jersey, C o n n e c t i c u t , Massachusetts, and Rhode Island are subscribing t o a surveillance and c o n t r o l plan that Involves disrupting t h e mosquitoes' r e p r o d u c t i o n , m o n i t o r i n g mosquitoes and birds f o r signs of the virus, and finally, instituting n e w p r o c e d u r e s at hospitals t o catch t h e earliest of h u m a n cases. As golf course superintendents, t h e r e are steps y o u can, and really must, take, t o k e e p t h e n u m b e r of n e w m o s q u i t o e s at bay o n t h e c o u r s e and club grounds. Eliminate t h e breeding grounds C h i e f Medical Entomologist at t h e Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in N e w Haven, Dr. T h e o d o r e Andreadis, explains that t h e best w a y t o r e d u c e t h e n u m b e r of m o s q u i t o e s is t o r e m o v e o r t r e a t any standing water, preferably n o w , b e f o r e t h e egg-bearing females t a k e flight. O t h e r places likely t o attract egg-laying mosquitoes, says Dr. Andreadis, are birdbaths, p o o l covers, pools that aren't w e l l chlorinated, buckets, dishes under flowerpots, unused equipment, w h e e l b a r r o w s , o r n a m e n t a l garden pools and s w a m p s t h a t d o n ' t have any fish, l o w - l y i n g w e t areas, and last, but certainly n o t least, leaf-clogged rain gutters. " D u r i n g m i d s u m m e r , m o s q u i t o e s can develop f r o m egg t o adult in as little as 10-12 days," notes Dr. Andreadis. " T h a t means that a single neglected rain g u t t e r could produce hundreds of mosquitoes each day." N o t a happy t h o u g h t even if t h e W e s t N i l e virus w e r e n ' t a t h r e a t . Your best defense ' A n y area that collects w a t e r should be checked o n a w e e k l y basis," suggests Dr. Andreadis. W h e n y o u ' r e dealing w i t h an o r n a m e n t a l pool, y o u m i g h t consider stocking it w i t h fish. " T h e fish w i l l f e e d on t h e m o s q u i t o larvae," says Dr. Andreadis, adding, " T h a t ' s w h y d e e p ponds generally don't produce large numbers of mosquitoes." W h a t kind of fish should y o u use? Dr. Michael Potter, urban e n t o m o l o g i s t at t h e University of Kentucky in Lexington, suggests m o s q u i t o fish, r e f e r r i n g t o w h a t are called Gambusia, essentially predacious m i n n o w s ; t h e y ' r e about 111 t o I Vi" long and dine quite happily o n m o s q u i t o larvae. Dr. Andreadis finds goldfish w o r k well and offered an added bonus: they tolerate l o w oxygen levels. "Both goldfish and m i n n o w s m a y n o t survive t h e w i n t e r , " cautions Dr. Andreadis, " w h i c h means you'll have t o be sure t o restock y o u r o r n a m e n t a l pools c o m e spring." A n o t h e r alternative, says Dr. Andreadis, is t o t r e a t t h e p o n d , s w a m p , o r w e t area w i t h a " b i o r a t i o n a l " insecticide that w i l l kill m o s q u i t o larvae w h i l e leaving pets, plants, and p e o p l e u n h a r m e d . A m o n g the products out there: Bactirnos, Vectofoae, a n d Y e e t o l e x . Y o u can get t h e s e and o t h e r similar materials t h r o u g h local suppliers. " M o s q u i t o D u n k s , " explains Dr. A n d r e a d i s , " a r e similar in size and shape t o small doughnuts, and t h e y float on t h e surface o f standing water. T h e s e p r o d u c t s contain a b a c t e r i u m called Baciflus thuringiensis isrealensis, w h i c h is t o x i c only t o m o s q u i t o e s . T h e larvae eat it and die." Each d u n k w i l l t r e a t 100 sq. ft. o f surface w a t e r f o r 3 0 days and w i l l r e m a i n effective f o r that t i m e even in w e t areas t h a t m a y d r y up and re-flood. Zapping the adults If y o u don't catch the mosquitoes in t h e larval stage, y o u can go after t h e m again r adults. T h e r e are n u m e r o u s p r o d u c t s o u t there. W h i c h one y o u choose will vary w i t h y o u r state's rules and regulations governing pesticide use, but areas you'll w a n t t o target w i l l r e m a i n t h e same. Some favorite adult hangouts: t h e bases of shrubs and high plants and vegetation along a pond's edge. O n e purported mosquito killer you don't w a n t t o c o u n t on, however, is bats. T h o u g h w e ' v e all been led t o believe that bats feast o n m o s q u i t o e s by t h e hundreds p e r h o u r (600 p e r hour, according t o one estimate), this is, apparently, w e l l . . . a c r o c k of guano. " T h e reality is bats don't eat many mosquitoes at all. In fact, mosquitoes make up less than o n e p e r c e n t of t h e bat's diet," says Dr. Andreadis, referring t o a recent study, which, a m o n g o t h e r things, examined t h e c o n t e n t s of bat's stomachs and feces. " T h e y eat m o r e m o t h s than t h e y d o m o s q u i t o e s , " he adds. A m o s q u i t o killer that m a y be w o r t h a gander, however, particularly f o r clubhouse o r golf shop areas, is a n e w bug-zapper-like p r o d u c t . Rossi, Cornell University Turfgrass Team (Part II of two parts) Bentgrass conversion Without the competition from the s e e d b a n k , it appears t h a t w e a k e n i n g t h e existing v e g e t a t i o n c o m b i n e d w i t h mechanical surface d i s r u p t i o n c o u l d lead t o successful c o n v e r s i o n . H o w e v e r , several issues r e m a i n t o be resolved, such as: w i l l this b e t r a n s p a r e n t t o t h e golfers? W h a t are effective p o s t - p l a n t p r o c e d u r e s t h a t d o n o t w e a k e n seedlings? A n d finally, h o w is cultivar c o n v e r s i o n d e t e r m i n e d ? Research f u n d e d by t h e G C S A A and t h e U S G A has involved c o n v e r s i o n o f existing Penncross greens t o e i t h e r C r e n s h a w , 1 - 9 3 , o r Penn A - 4 . In each case, a significant a m o u n t o f e f f o r t w e n t i n t o d e t e r m i n i n g a precise m e t h o d f o r distinguishing a m o n g cultivars, so t h a t c o n v e r s i o n c o u l d be quantified. T h e s e a r c h e r s d e v e l o p e d genetic m a r k i n g techniques t h a t allows f o r separation o f cultivars. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , in s o m e cases t h e cultivars are so closely r e l a t e d genetically that it is difficult t o find m a r k e r differences. Nevertheless, sufficient data was available t o m a k e s o m e conclusions based o n t h e conversion techniques that w e r e instigated. Dr. Richard W h i t e at Texas A & M U n i v e r s i t y c o n d u c t e d e x p e r i m e n t s at t h e Extension C e n t e r and at t h e Dallas C . C . Plots w e r e i n t e r s e e d e d in A p r i l 1995 and evaluated f o r up t o 14 m o n t h s . It w a s c o n c l u d e d t h a t mechanical d i s r u p t i o n d i d n o t substantially influence species c o n v e r sion and that topdressing following seeding w a s all t h a t m i g h t be n e e d e d . This is n o t surprising w h e n t h e size o f a bentgrass seed is c o n s i d e r e d . In a d d i t i o n , chemical suppression w i t h g l y p h o s a t e resulted in a 9 5 % increase in C r e n s h a w p o p u l a t i o n . H o w e v e r , it w a s o b s e r v e d t h a t r e c o v e r y o f existing v e g e t a t i o n and seedlings w a s n o t sufficient t o be a practical o p t i o n . Interestingly, at t h e Dallas C.C., initial (4 w k . ) evaluation indicated a significant conversion; - b y t h e 6 - m o n t h evaluation C r e n s h a w nade u p less t h a n 1 0 % o f t h e stand. Mechanical disruption and seeding f o l l o w e d by a l t e r a t i o n in m o w i n g heights t o possibly e n c o u r a g e t h e n e w cultivars t h a t are m o r e a d a p t e d t o close m o w i n g , r e s u l t e d in little if any n e w cultivars being i n t r o d u c e d . T h e s e researchers utilized t h e genetic m a r k e r m e t h o d s similar t o t h o s e e m p l o y e d in t h e Texas study. Success o f t h e s e practices at Valhalla may n o t be as precisely d e t e r m i n e d as in t h e c o n t r o l l e d research studies, h o w e v e r , M a r k has indicated t h a t t h e r e is i m p r o v e d quality o f t h e surfaces, w h e t h e r t h e n e w cultivars are p r e s e n t o r not. Summary A l t e r i n g a niche in a w a y t h a t favors o n e species o v e r another, such as annual bluegrass versus bentgrass, has b e e n s h o w n t o p r e s e n t a f o r m i d a b l e challenge. In addition, w h e r e t h e r e has b e e n success r e p o r t e d , severe r e d u c t i o n in quality is f o l l o w e d by a significant alteration o f m a n a g e m e n t . T h e r e f o r e , based o n t h e latest i n f o r m a t i o n available, w i t h o u t severe suppression ( o r kill) o f existing bentgrass surfaces, t h e o v e r l a p in resources r e q u i r e d (similarity o f niches) m a k e successful c o n v e r s i o n a f o r m i d a b l e challenge. This w i l l r e q u i r e a w e l l articulated a c t i o n plan t h a t i n f o r m s t h e golfers o f t h e t r a n s i t i o n e x p e c t e d d u r i n g t h e c o n v e r s i o n process and t h e l i k e l i h o o d o f l o n g - t e r m success w i t h o u t significant s h o r t - t e r m r e d u c t i o n s in payability. In essence, bentgrass overseeding can w o r k , b u t n o t w i t h o u t significantly altering t h e playing quality o f t h e surface.
