G o l f c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s , t h o s e o n c e t h o u g h t t o be c e m e n t e d t o t h e i r p r e s e n t places o f e m p l o y m e n t , are iosing t h e i r jobs at an alarming rate. T h e y are n o t fly-by-night s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s , either. T h e y are t h e pick, t h e p r i d e o f t h e profession. Yet, t h e y are being tossed t o t h e w i n d as a n e w w a v e o f c o u n t r y club presidents, g r e e n c h a i r m e n , b o a r d m e m bers, and c o u r s e o w n e r s c u t t h r o u g h t h e ranks w i t h a w i l d , o u t o f c o n t r o l s w o r d . O n e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t , insisting o n a n o n y m i t y , as d i d all c o n t r i b u t o r s t o this p r o j e c t , e p i t o m i z e d t h e anxiety spreading like the plague a m o n g t h e older generation o f t h e profession in r e f e r e n c e t o t h e r e c e n t dismissal of D o n H e a r n . H e a r n is an icon a m o n g nationally r e c o g n i z e d s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s , but his release f r o m W e s t o n G o l f C l u b proves e v e n icons can fail o u t o f favor. Part o f t h e d i l e m m a defies logic, because m o s t o f t h e dismissals aren't related t o p e r f o r m a n c e . T h o s e w i t h t h e p o w e r t o discharge a s u p e r i n t e n d e n t at a m o m e n t ' s n o t i c e e q u a t e t h e act w i t h t h e j o b life e x p e c t a n c y o f t h e t i m e s . It a l m o s t has b e c o m e s p o r t f o r p e o p l e t o change jobs four, five, o r six t i m e s in a lifetime, and t h a t k i n d o f m e n t a l i t y underlines t h e precarious position o f s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s w h o have earned a f o r m o f p e r m a n e n c e at t h e i r club o r course. A r e t h e y b e c o m i n g an e n d a n g e r e d species? "I foresee t h e e n d o f r e t i r e m e n t f r o m a long-serving p o s i t i o n , " w a r n e d a n o t h e r s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w h o is closing in o n t h e magic c u t o f f n u m b e r o f 25 years at o n e club. "Eventually, m o s t o f us w i t h a lot o f t i m e served o n o n e j o b w i l l be pushed o u t . O h , t h e r e ' l l p r o b a b l y be o p p o r t u n i t y t o resign so t h a t y o u r r e s u m e still looks squeaky clean. H o w e v e r , in reality, it'll be nothing but a put-on." iiMiifeiiiiiitUifeii HMMM T h e squeeze o n veteran superintendents o f t e n begins as a m a t t e r o f personality p r e f e r e n c e by t h o s e in charge. "It's h a p p e n e d m o r e t h a n o n c e , " a disgusted superintendent noted. "Two or three p e o p l e o n t h e b o a r d d o n ' t like y o u and t h e n e x t t h i n g y o u k n o w , y o u ' r e gone. It's like y o u have t o be p e r f e c t . You have t o have a personality t h a t bubbles all the time. "I t h i n k if I c o u l d , I'd find a public relations c o u r s e I c o u l d t a k e o v e r and o v e r again. T h a t ' s w h a t y o u have t o be o n t h e j o b n o w . . . a public relations e x p e r t w i t h y o u r s e l f as y o u r o n l y client. W h i c h means y o u have t o k n o w h o w t o t h r o w t h e bull and b u t t e r up people. T h a t ' s n o t w h a t this profession w a s all a b o u t w h e n I started. A n d it wasn't t h a t long ago." T h e y ' r e all e x p e r t s , at least t h e y t h i n k t h e y are. W i t h t h e m , o n e m i s t a k e , h o w e v e r small, and y o u ' r e o u t . " I t seems I've hit t h e o n e definitive c h o r d in t h e p r o b l e m . T h e p e o p l e w h o w e r e in charge, say 30 years ago, a r e e i t h e r g o n e t o t h e i r final r e w a r d o r t o o detached f r o m the mainstream of the c l u b t o m a k e a d i f f e r e n c e in p e r s o n n e l m a t t e r s . To t h e m , y o u ' r e e i t h e r h i s t o r y o r a b o u t t o b e c o m e history." T h e n e w kids o n t h e g o v e r n i n g b l o c k , so t o speak, a p p e a r h a r d t o please. T h e y feel n o sense o f loyalty w h e n it c o m e s t o assessing t h e w o r t h and f u t u r e o f a s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w h o m i g h t have b e e n o n t h e job even before they w e r e born. "I w o r r y about m y situation," another m e m b e r of the 25-year club offered. " I ' m w o r r i e d because I ' m in t h e d a r k a b o u t m y bosses. I d o n ' t k n o w w h a t t h e y w a n t f r o m m e , and I ' m n o t s u r e t h e y e v e n k n o w t h e m s e l v e s . Even p e r f e c t i o n isn't t h a t g o o d if t h e y a r e t h i n k i n g o f m a k i n g a change. Right n o w I k n o w m y j o b ' s in j e o p a r d y b u t I can't tell y o u w h y . " A n o t h e r s u p e r i n t e n d e n t , visibly u p s e t o v e r t h e o u t b r e a k o f dismissals o f colleagues in his age and e x p e r i e n c e b r a c k e t , has t w o v i e w s o n t h e situation. " I t h i n k t h e p e o p l e n o w in c h a r g e at clubs and c o u r s e s are p r o d u c t s o f a m i c r o w a v e society," he explained. " T h e y ' r e o n l y i n t e r e s t e d in instant results. If y o u have a p r o j e c t t h a t was scheduled t o be c o m p l e t e d t o m o r r o w , t h e y insist it be d o n e yesterday. So, t h e y have unrealistic e x p e c t a t i o n s and m a k e unrealistic d e m a n d s . H o w d o y o u deal w i t h t h a t k i n d o f mentality? " I n line w i t h t h a t , t h o s e s a m e p e o p l e w a n t t o d o business w i t h e m p l o y e e s c l o s e r t o t h e i r age and p e r s p e c t i v e . So, t h e y z e r o in o n t h e y o u n g g o l f c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t t o d o t h e j o b . In t u r n , t h e y o u n g s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s are hanging a r o u n d like leeches r e a d y t o cling t o any o p p o r t u n i t y t o a d v a n c e t h e i r careers. Personally, I ' m c o n v i n c e d t h e y c o u l d n ' t feel b e t t e r a b o u t w h a t ' s h a p p e n i n g . " W o w ! It sounds as if a b a t t l e o f agebased g r o u p s is a b o u t t o b r e a k o u t in t h e p r o f e s s i o n , especially in N e w England, w h e r e older superintendents are being pink-slipped out of their workplaces w i t h f r i g h t e n i n g regularity. Is t h a t a t t i t u d e , t h e p r o p o s a l labeling y o u n g s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s as insensitive b l o o d s u c k e r s , f o r real, o r just a w i l d accusation? 7 think the people now in charge at clubs and courses are products of a microwave society. They're only interested in instant results." T h i s p r o j e c t d i p p e d i n t o t h e ranks o f superintendents waiting for t h e chance t o t a k e a giant s t e p f o r w a r d in t h e i r careers. T h e r e w a s a v o i c e in t h e g r o u p t h a t d i d n ' t m i n d b e i n g h e a r d . Fittingly, it is also a c a n d i d v o i c e , o n e laced w i t h sincerity. " I can't d e n y t h a t a lot o f m o v e m e n t in t h e p r o f e s s i o n is g o o d f o r t h e y o u n g guys in it. M a n y o f t h e firings are n o t right. T h e n , t o o , w e k n o w that d o w n t h e r o a d t h e same t h i n g c o u l d happen t o us. W e are t h e patriarchs o f t o m o r r o w . So, no, w e ' r e n o t c h e e r i n g f o r t h e bad guys in this o n e . " T h e faction clash, o r possible infighting of superintendents according t o age group, b r o u g h t a n o t h e r interesting reaction f r o m t h e a f o r e m e n t i o n e d y o u n g Turk. "Generally, I think t h e r e is g o o d r a p p o r t b e t w e e n t h e t w o age g r o u p s , if y o u w a n t t o b r e a k it d o w n t h a t w a y , " he p r o p o s e d . " B u t it's only natural t h a t y o u feel m o r e c o m f o r t a b l e w i t h p e o p l e y o u r o w n age. W e , t h e y o u n g guys, usually sit t o g e t h e r at meetings, b u t w h y not? W e speak t h e same language. W e have similar interests. I have friends in b o t h age groups, i also respect e x p e r i e n c e , accomplishment, intelligence, and w h a t e v e r goes i n t o t h e m a k i n g o n an established s u p e r i n t e n d e n t . "I wish I'd never taken that big step up," i n t o n e d o u r m a n w h o had spent 30 years o n t h e same course. H e c o n t e m p l a t e d a lawsuit w h e n he w a s t e r m i n a t e d . "I d o n ' t k n o w w h y I did it. I w a s v e r y happy just c o n c e n t r a t i n g o n g r o o m i n g t h e golf course. T h e n o n e day, o u t o f t h e blue, t h e y said, 'here's y o u r w a l k i n g papers.' W h a t a jolt! T h e big boss e v e n sent s o m e o n e else t o d o his d i r t y w o r k . "I hired a l a w y e r t o pursue a lawsuit. T h e only t h i n g t o c o m e o u t of that w a s a curt rejoinder f r o m m y f o r m e r employer. It said t h e y w e r e eliminating m y position. W h e n m y l a w y e r said t h e suit w o u l d be endless and v e r y expensive, I had n o c h o i c e but t o d r o p it and t r y t o r e d i r e c t m y life. I ' m 56 years old. T h a t ' s a d u b i o u s age w h e n y o u ' r e l o o k i n g f o r a j o b . " T h e r e is a n o t h e r side t o r e j e c t i o n o f t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w h o sees t h e handw r i t i n g o n t h e w a l l and decides n o t t o r e n e w his c o n t r a c t . H e is a reluctant defector, t h o u g h . In m a n y cases, being in o n e place 25 years constitutes a career in itself. Yet, he t h r o w s his possibilities o n a r i s k - v e r s u s - r e w a r d scale and decides his f u t u r e at that o n e place is d o o m e d . "Yes, I could have stayed," he disclosed. "But my concern was the long-term developments waiting at the end of another c o n t r a c t . Right n o w , p e o p l e w h o r u n golf courses are l o o k e d o n as a disposable b r e e d and m y fear w a s t h a t i'd be t o o o l d t o be t h r o w n t o t h e w o l v e s t h r e e o r f o u r years d o w n t h e road. "Strange, I t h i n k w e (superintendents) are o u r o w n w o r s t enemies. W e ' v e t u r n e d t h e business o f c o n d i t i o n i n g a golf c o u r s e i n t o an art, a science. W e ' v e reached a p o i n t w h e r e o u r e m p l o y e e s t h i n k , 'anyb o d y can d o it'. It f o l l o w s t h a t t h e y d e c i d e it's easy t o replace us and get t h e same We Ve turned the business of conditioning a golf course into on art, a science. We've reached a point where our employers think 'anybody can do it'. It follows that they decide it's easy to replace us and get the same results." 7 can't deny that a lot of movement in the profession is good for the young guys in it. Guys like me." results. Finally, h e r e is a v i e w t h r o u g h t h e eyes and p r o v e n perspective of t h e golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t w h o m a d e it t o r e t i r e m e n t f r o m his last base of operations. H e had spent 36 years t h e r e . His r e t i r e m e n t , breaking a w a y f r o m t h e profession, was a pleasant e x p e r i e n c e . Yet, he is n o t w i t h o u t c u t t i n g observations o f t h e p r e s e n t state of affairs. " G e t t i n g t h e ax goes w i t h any kind o f w o r k y o u ' r e d o i n g , " he o p e n e d his diatribe. " W e ' r e living in an age o f y o u n g h o t s h o t s w h o talk a b o u t things like being stressed o u t and change jobs simply f o r a change o f scenery. T h e sad part of t h e i r i n v o l v e m e n t in golf is t h a t t h e y ' r e t h e ones r u n n i n g t h e c o u n t r y clubs and courses. S o m e o f t h e m are i n t o d o u b l e figures in t h e m a t t e r of changing jobs. T h a t ' s t h e situation t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t has t o deal w i t h . "Lifestyles are d i f f e r e n t today. T h e o l d e r s u p e r i n t e n d e n t has t o adjust t o it o r he b e c o m e s a casualty. H e has t o k n o w w h o his e n e m i e s are and w i n t h e m o v e r t o his side. T h a t ' s a c o m m u n i c a t i o n s situation. T h e y can't sit back and let t h e 'yuppies' m a k e t h e first m o v e . If t h e y d o , t h e first t i m e an issue is raised t h e y ' l l get t h e zing. I guess w h a t I ' m t r y i n g t o say is y o u c o m p l y o r y o u ' r e cut o u t of t h e action." So, f r o m all t h e sounds heard here, t h e r e isn't o n e single indisputable solution t o t h e l o n g - t e r m golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s ' d i l e m m a , as o n e by one, t h e y c o n t i n u e t o w a l k t h e plank. A n d , h o r r o r of h o r r o r s , if t h e y are t o o g o o d f o r t h e i r o w n g o o d , as suggested by o n e o f t h e i r o w n , m a y b e t h e y ' r e painting t h e m s e l v e s o u t o f golf's big picture. F o r this test, t h e statistical difference b e t w e e n t r e a t m e n t s (LSD p = G.Q5) is 8.9. This means that if y o u subtract t h e disease p e r c e n t of o n e treatment from another treatment, the difference m u s t be m o r e than 8.9 o r t h e y are statistically t h e same. F o r example, t h e r e was statistically m o r e disease in s o m e of the C o m p a n i o n - t r e a t e d plots than the non-treated plots. This was possibly because the Bacillus bacteria w e r e not active in cold w e a t h e r and/or because the D I V O T p r o d u c t carrier provided a f o o d source f o r t h e s n o w m o l d fungi. W e did a second statistical evaluation o f t h e disease evaluations excluding t h e high disease n u m b e r s in t h e C o m p a n i o n t r e a t e d plots and t h e n o n - t r e a t e d plots. This w a s d o n e t o d e t e r m i n e m o r e precisely if application date had any effect o n t h e final a m o u n t of disease. W h e n this w a s d o n e , a n e w LSD value o f 3.8 w a s calculated. This means that in t h e remaining t r e a t m e n t s , t h e difference b e t w e e n disease n u m b e r s m u s t be m o r e than 3.8 o r t h e y are n o t statistically d i f f e r e n t . In I I of t h e 19 remaining t r e a t m e n t s , t h e r e w e r e n o statistical differences b e t w e e n disease d e v e l o p m e n t at any of t h e f o u r application dates.
