So, I t o o k a chance o n m y ability t o c o n v i n c e t h e m t h a t d o i n g business w i t h m e w a s a g o o d deal all a r o u n d . " Success d i d n ' t h a p p e n o v e r n i g h t f o r t h e Cornicellis. In fact, M i k e p u t in s o m e stress-laced days and nights t r y i n g t o g e t his business o f f t h e g r o u n d . H o w e v e r , it's always b e e n t h a t w a y h e r e because t h a t ' s t h e w a y e v e r y o n e e x p e c t e d K i t t a n s e t t t o be. " T h r o u g h t h e years, t o o , t h e m e m b e r s have c o m e t o realize t h a i a law o f e c o n o m i c s can be applied t o t h e c o n d i t i o n o f t h e golf c o u r s e . In o t h e r w o r d s , t h e y k n o w t h a t high-grade m a i n t e n a n c e brings w i t h it a high b u d g e t and t h a t t h e services t h e y r e c e i v e are actually a r e t u r n o n t h e m o n e y t h e y s p e n d t o give us a c h a n c e t o give t h e m w h a t t h e y w a n t . " I l o o k a r o u n d , t o o , and I can see t h a t .ne quality o f m a i n t e n a n c e has b e e n o n a c o n t i n u o u s upgrade. S o m e t i m e s , y o u have t o consider yourself a success if y o u ' r e able t o keep up w i t h the neighbors, conditionw i s e . Surpassing t h e m c o u l d be a n o t h e r s t o r y because t h e c o m p e t i t i o n t o p r o d u c e t h e best possible playing c o n d i t i o n s is very strong. Because w e as superintendents are putting great d e m a n d s o n t h e turf, t h e stress o n grass has b e c o m e unbelievable. S o m e t i m e s y o u w o n d e r w h e r e o r w h e n w e ' l l reach a p o i n t w h e r e e n o u g h is e n o u g h . F r o m m y p o i n t o f v i e w I can o n l y see t h a t it w i l l b e c o m e w o r s e b e f o r e it b e c o m e s better. I r e m e m b e r w h e n I first t r i e d t o handle o n e , it b e c a m e a p e r s o n a l b a t t l e b e t w e e n m e and t h e e l e c t r o n i c w o r l d . " O f c o u r s e , I c o u l d n ' t e n d this w i t h o u t m e n t i o n i n g t h e l o n g w a y w e ' v e c o m e in t h e m a t t e r o f salary and benefits. T h a t ' s t h e big p a r t o f t h e change cycle. Maybe, t o o , it's a t h r o w b a c k t o t h e saying t h a t y o u g e t w h a t y o u pay f o r . " I h a p p e n t o be in t h a t age (42) and e x p e r i e n c e g r o u p (20 years) t h a t has seen everything c o m e together for the good of t h e profession. Frankly, w e ' v e elevated t h e position w i t h o u r expertise and success and w i t h it has c o m e a t r e m e n d o u s r e t u r n in salaries and benefits. "It's t h e best t i m e f o r m e t o be in t h e profession because I c a m e i n t o it w h e n e d u c a t i o n and e x p e r i e n c e b r o u g h t t h e golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t t o a m u c h higher plateau o n t h e landscape o f golf c o u r s e and c o u n t r y club o p e r a t i o n s . W e c o n t i n u e t o b e n e f i t f r o m this and so d o t h e courses w e service. I t h i n k e v e r y o n e w o u l d have t o a g r e e t h a t golf c o u r s e c o n d i t i o n has n e v e r b e e n b e t t e r t h a n it is right n o w . " N a t u r a l l y , t h e d e m a n d s o f t h e golfers have p u t t h e ball in o u r c o u r t and so far we've responded pretty well. W i t h thai c o m b i n a t i o n o f c o n t i n u i n g e d u c a t i o n and h a n d s - o n e x p e r i e n c e has c o m e a b e t t e r p r o d u c t . It has also signaled a b r i g h t future for the y o u n g people coming into t h e business. " I n m y p o s i t i o n , t h a t h a n d s - o n aspect o f t h e j o b has t a k e n a n e w t w i s t so t h a t I ' m n o w h a n d s - o n w i t h p e o p l e . I've b e c o m e closer w i t h m y m e m b e r s and become somewhat of a spokesman for w h a t m e t h o d s are used t o p r o d u c e a high-quality golf c o u r s e and w h a t p a r t e v e r y o n e has in t h e p r o d u c t i o n . So, I've t r a n s f e r r e d m y i n p u t s o m e by b e c o m i n g m o r e o f a m a n a g e m e n t p e r s o n t h a n an o n - t h e - s p o t , physical m e m b e r o f t h e conditioning team. "Yes, t h e d e m a n d s are high also, b u t I t h i n k m o s t o f us a r e m e e t i n g t h o s e d e m a n d s . W e have a b e t t e r w o r k i n g e n v i r o n m e n t and so d o o u r assistants and o t h e r staff m e m b e r s . So, t h e last 10 years have b e e n g o o d f o r t h e p r o f e s s i o n . " j o e Rybka, CGCSs T h o r n y Lea Golf Q u b : " I ' d say t h e best w a y t o d e s c r i b e t h e ¡así 10 years in t h e golf c o u r s e c o n d i t i o n i n g business is t o call it a d e c a d e o f change. T h o s e changes have c o m e w i t h a price tag because t h e changes have p r o d u c e d b e t t e r - c o n d i t i o n e d courses. " T h e r e are a n u m b e r o f changes in t h e d a y - t o - d a y m a i n t e n a n c e routing. O f c o u r s e , w e ' r e c u t t i n g e v e r y t h i n g shorter, d o i n g it m o r e o f t e n , using less chemicals (I h o p e o n e day w e can c o n d i t i o n e v e r y t h i n g w i t h o u t chemicals) and w e ' r e e m p l o y i n g m o r e people t o bring conditions t o w h e r e our members want them. That's w h e r e t h e p r i c e c o m e s in. " T h e r e ' s a lot o f m o n e y being spent t o play golf. Regardless, it seems t h a t this is w h a t t h e golfer w a n t s in t h e m a t t e r o f having t o pay f o r t h e playing c o n d i t i o n s golfers have c o m e t o e x p e c t . M y c r e w s are bigger, t h e y w o r k longer hours, and I have a c o n t i n u i n g e d u c a t i o n p r o g r a m t h a t keeps m e o n m y toes. It all adds up t o larger expenses, b u t also p r o d u c e s c o n d i t i o n s t h a t usually m e e t m e m b e r demands. " S o m e o f t h o s e d e m a n d s I agree w i t h , o t h e r s I ' m n o t so s u r e a b o u t . H o w e v e r , in m y 33 years h e r e , I've always t r i e d t o d e l i v e r w h a t t h e g o l f e r w a n t s and expects. M y m a n y years h e r e have t o s h o w t h a t b o t h parties are d o i n g right. I ' m happy, m y m e m b e r s a r e happy, and m y c r e w falls i n t o t h e same mentality. T h e last 10 years have b r o u g h t w i t h t h e m m a n y changes. It's n o t f o r us t o say w h e t h e r t h e y ' r e all f o r t h e g o o d o r n o t . A s y o u r president, I have many goals and d u t i e s . M y first d u t y is t o h o n o r Kevin O s g o o d . Kevin has been president of this association f o r t h e last t w o years. As president, he served on many committees. Two of those committees were the M G A a n d O u i m e t b o a r d of d i r e c t o r s . H e w e n t t o a m i n i m u m of three meetings per month. A s president, he w a s always getting p h o n e calls, setting up m e e t i n g agendas and r e p r e s e n t i n g G C S A N E at functions f r o m cancer research t o serving o n the n e w A M G O b o a r d . In a d d i t i o n t o these hectic duties, Kevin has family responsibilities as a husband and father of t h r e e children. A l l t h e s e duties have k e p t Kevin v e r y busy o v e r the last t w o years. For all his hard w o r k a n d d e d i c a t i o n , it gave m e great pleasure t o p r e s e n t a G C S A N E chair t o Kevin o n behalf of all of us in t h e association. A s president, I feel m e m b e r s h i p is an i m p o r t a n t t o p i c f o r discussion. I a m p r o u d t o say t h a t o u r association's m e m b e r s h i p is fast g r o w i n g . This submission ' is d u e annually by M a r c h I. U n d e r Section 312, t h e r e are t w o categories o f regulated substances. First, t h e r e are Extremely Hazardous Substances (EHS), 360 chemicals f o u n d in Part 355, A p p e n d i x A and B o f t h e act. You m u s t r e p o r t any EHS y o u have n o w , o r any t i m e d u r i n g t h e p r e c e d i n g year, that exceeded t h e t h r e s h o l d o f 500 pounds, 55 gallons, o r t h e " t h r e s h o l d planning quantity," w h i c h e v e r is less. A listing of t h e EHS chemicals can be obtained by visiting t h e Mass. SERC w e b s i t e (www.state.ma.us) o r www.sportsclubmanagement.com. REGULATIONS Second, t h e r e are Hazardous Chemicals, any chemical regulated by O S H A u n d e r t h e Hazard C o m m u n i c a t i o n Standard. You m u s t r e p o r t all hazardous chemicals that y o u have 10,000 pounds o r m o r e of, n o w o r at any t i m e d u r i n g t h e p r e c e d i n g year. ¡ D e t e r m i n i n g r e p o r t i n g s t a t u s . Based o n m y discussions w i t h several superintendents, t h e vast majority o f chemicals listed o n t h e EHS list are not used c u r r e n t l y in golf course maintenance operations. H o w e v e r , t h e r e are several chemicals (e.g. m e t h y l b r o m i d e , aldicarb, and f o n o f o s ) o n t h e EHS list that are still used by s o m e superintendents. Pool chemicals such as chlorine and b r o m i d e are also o n t h e list. T h e only w a y t o k n o w f o r sure if y o u need t o file a T i e r II r e p o r t is t o r e v i e w y o u r club's chemical i n v e n t o r y and usage, chemical by chemical, w i t h t h e EHS list. You need t o k n o w w h a t chemicals y o u have, t h e i r active ingredients, and t h e m a x i m u m a m o u n t y o u have at any o n e given t i m e . Following y o u r r e v i e w of t h e EHS list, y o u need t o see if t h e m a x i m u m a m o u n t y o u ever had a o n e t i m e o f y o u r n o n - E H S chemicals e v e r e x c e e d e d t h e 10,000p o u n d threshold. If t h e a n s w e r is "Yes", t h e n y o u m u s t submit a T i e r I! r e p o r t . W h e n a " r e p o r t a b l e " chemical is part of a m i x t u r e , y o u have t h e o p t i o n o f r e p o r t i n g either t h e w e i g h t of t h e e n t i r e m i x t u r e o r only t h e p o r t i o n t h a t is t h e particular hazardous chemical. For example, if a hazardous solution, A B C , weighs 100 lbs. and is c o m p o s e d o f 1 0 % sulfuric acid (a " r e p o r t a b l e " chemical) and 9 0 % of " n o n - r e p o r t a b l e " chemicals, y o u can r e p o r t either 100 lbs. o f A B C o r 10 lbs. of sulfuric acid. Please note that y o u m u s t aggregate y o u r totals of each particular " r e p o r t a b l e " chemical in o r d e r t o d e t e r m i n e if y o u have e x c e e d e d t h e t h r e s h o l d . C o m p l e t i n g t h e T i e r ¡3 r e p o r t . If y o u have e x c e e d e d any r e p o r t i n g thresholds, t h e n y o u m u s t s u b m i t a T i e r II r e p o r t . C . , and has b e e n a C G C S since 1988. A m e m b e r o f t h e G C S A N E since 1982, he has s e r v e d t h r e e years as a t r u s t e e a n d t h r e e years as Newsletter chairman. A native o f O h i o , K i p first s h a r p e n e d his e d u c a t i o n a l focus at W h e t s t o n e H i g h S c h o o l in C o l u m b u s . And none of U UU-- C--' C-U t h e already-seated star-gazers w o u l d a l l o w themselves t o be elbowed away f r o m t h e i r c o v e t e d positions at t h e eyepiece. HOST PROFILE Times w e r e tough. But the resourceful y o u n g m a n had t o f o l l o w his passion, and looked f o r t h e best w i d e - o p e n space w h e r e he c o u l d c o n t e m p l a t e t h e stars. Yes, he b e c a m e o n e o f t h e m a n y trespassing night w a n d e r e r s at a local golf c o u r s e . O n e clear s u m m e r night he l i n g e r e d o n t h e c o u r s e until nearly d a w n , oblivious t o t h e passing o f t i m e . W h e n he b e c a m e a w a r e of t h e buzz o f m o r n i n g maintenance activity, it w a s t o o late. H e w a s caught. But since he w a s o u t o f a job, his d o w n and-out attire allowed him t o blend right in w i t h t h e w o r k c r e w .
