" W e have a g o o d p r o g r a m g o i n g n o w , so w h y t a l k a b o u t big changes w h e n w e d o n ' t n e e d t h e m ? I had an o u t s t a n d i n g predecessor, t h e same efficient and c o m p a t i b l e b o a r d is r e t u r n i n g a n d o u r profession has n e v e r b e e n in b e t t e r shape." A n d t h o s e b o a r d meetings. I ' m l o o k i n g f o r w a r d t o t h e challenges o f t h o s e . Regardless, Kevin set high standards for me t o match. " B u t t h a t ' s t h e p a t t e r n set by all o f o u r presidents. W e ' v e had a succession o f t r u e leaders. I t h i n k as y o u m o v e u p t h e l a d d e r o n t h e w a y t o m o r e responsibility a n d a u t h o r i t y y o u a c q u i r e a sense o f d u t y t o t h e j o b and t h e m e m b e r s y o u ' r e serving. That's the w a y I'm approaching m y t e n u r e as p r e s i d e n t and it's w h y I ' m full o f enthusiasm and e n e r g y t o d o t h e j o b . " Ruszala c o u l d be a natural as t h e first G C S A N E president f r o m the western end o f Massachusetts since L o n g m e a d o w ' s L e o n St. P i e r r e 3 0 years ago. H e ' s a natural because t h e golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s ' p r o f e s s i o n c a m e as s e c o n d G a r r y St. j e a n at C h i c o p e e H i g h School. St. jean's n a m e s h o u l d c o n n e c t t o t h o s e trolling the N B A waters. H e was the coach o f t h e S a c r a m e n t o Kings f o r several years b e f o r e m o v i n g o n t o his p r e s e n t post as general m a n a g e r o f t h e G o l d e n State W a r r i o r s . M e n t i o n o f St. Jean is i m p o r t a n t in t h e life o f B o b Ruszala because o f t h e continued on page 2 s7 think we should do more in communicating with other associations. I've m o l d e d m y professional and h o m e life a f t e r it and so far I have n o c o m p l a i n t s w i t h his t h e o r i e s . " Ruszala t o o k his first steps in t h e p r o f e s s i o n w h e n he s e r v e d his a p p r e n t i c e ship u n d e r a n o t h e r w o r k e t h i c booster, Ed Majka, at t h e Springfield C o u n t r y Club. After one year there Bob moved o n t o t h e head s u p e r i n t e n d e n t ' s j o b at H o l y o k e C o u n t r y C l u b . T h a t w a s 1976. H e s p e n t seven years t h e r e and t h e n g o t t h e call f r o m his p r e s e n t place o f t u r f c o n t r o l , H i c k o r y Ridge C o u n t r y C l u b . Bob is in his 16th year at H i c k o r y Ridge, so he's d e m o n s t r a t e d staying p o w e r in an o t h e r w i s e changing w o r l d e n v i r o n m e n t . T h e r e have b e e n f o u r d i f f e r e n t golf professionals and five f o o d managers since he a r r i v e d o n t h e scene. T h e r e f o r e , H i c k o r y m e m b e r s h i p and o w n e r s h i p have t o be pleased w i t h t h e w a y B o b handles his responsibilities. " I have a g o o d o w n e r and g o o d m e m b e r s , " Ruszala r e m a r k e d . " T h e y ' r e b e h i n d m e o n e h u n d r e d p e r c e n t in m y association i n v o l v e m e n t . T h e y realize I'll need extra time away f r o m the course t o d o t h e k i n d o f j o b t h e y ' r e always e x p e c t i n g o f m e . M y family shares t h a t r e a c t i o n . I have a l o t o f s u p p o r t h e r e and I k n o w o u r m e m b e r s h i p will f o l l o w suit." Speaking o f family, Ruszala is blessed w i t h l o v e d ones right o u t o f a t e l e v i s i o n s c r i p t w r i t e r ' s f o n d e s t d r e a m s . His w i f e , D e n i s e , is a s c h o o l t e a c h e r w h o o n c e was administrative secretary for the Massachusetts Turf C o n f e r e n c e and a t w o y e a r b o o k k e e p e r f o r t h e G C S A N E . Son Paui, 16, is a j u n i o r at H o i y o k e C a t h o l i c H i g h School. D a u g h t e r j a c l y n , 14, m a d e it t w o f o r t w o f o r t h e family o n t h e political front by winning a hotly contested election f o r p r e s i d e n c y o f h e r f r e s h m a n class. Ruszala's l o w k e y vision o f his reign d o e s n ' t m e a n he's a b o u t t o sit back a n d rest o f Kevin O s g o o d ' s laurels. But t h a t lapse w a s forgotten once the "remember when's" s t a r t e d t o g a t h e r speed. B o b G r a n t , a t o r c h b e a r e r of s o r t s since he w a s o n e of t h e first o f t h e b r e e d to make the transformation from s u p e r i n t e n d e n t t o general m a n a g e r at t h e Brae B u r n C o u n t r y C l u b , spied an o l d f r i e n d and t h e s t o r y - s w a p p i n g g o t underway. Tom Curran, former superint e n d e n t o f T h e C o u n t r y C l u b and G C S A N E p r e s i d e n t in 1974-75, w a s a s i d e k i c k o f G r a n t b a c k in t h o s e association g r o w i n g - u p days. In fact, C u r r a n s u c c e e d e d G r a n t as its prexy. B o b recalled t h e g r e a t strides t a k e n in t h o s e days in t h e s t r e a m l i n i n g o f t h e association Newsletter. H e was among a g r o u p o f public relations-minded m e m b e r s ( L e o n St. Pierre, D e a n R o b e r t s o n and D i c k Blake) w h o b e l i e v e d t h e p r o f e s s i o n n e e d e d a v o i c e t o sell its a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s a n d standing t o t h e golfing c o m m u n i t y . "And that's just w h a t t h e Newsletter did," Grant offered. " W e needed recognition t o g e t o n t h e professional rolls and t h a t ' s h o w w e did i t . " Joining in t h a t revisit t o a vital p a r t o f G C S A N E ' s past w e r e t h e always-affable Mucciarone twins, N o r m and Bob. T h e y n o d d e d in a g r e e m e n t o v e r t h e fact t h a t a g o o d deal o f t h e 50s, 60s, and 70s w a s d e v o t e d t o r e v i e w i n g and reshaping t h e public's image o f t h e golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n tendent, t o the point that today the p o s i t i o n c o m m a n d s a place at t h e t o p o f t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i v e l a d d e r in golf and c o u n t r y club o p e r a t i o n s . Then, too, the Mucciarones added t o t h e m o m e n t by c o n t i n u i n g t o baffle e v e n occasional friends w i t h t h e i r identities. The limes certainly have flown, but they have been good times because of the relationships formed in the association. Cassidy is o n e o f m a n k i n d ' s g e m s . H e c e l e b r a t e s his 9 4 t h b i r t h d a y n e x t m o n t h and still retains a m i n d s e t a l m o s t equal t o t h e t i m e in his life w h e n he w a s an association c a r e t a k e r ( d u r i n g W o r k W a r II) a n d its leader as p r e s i d e n t in 1948-49. Phil's m e m o r y n e v e r slipped o r flinched as he recalled t h e critical years o f t h a t w a r in respect t o t h e profession. S o m e o n e had t o h o l d it t o g e t h e r as its ranks d w i n d l e d because o f service obligations. Phil s a w t o it t h a t his glue held things in place. So, t h e G C S A N E 7 5 t h b i r t h d a y c a m e across as envisioned by Healey and his c o m m i t t e e , as w e l l as t h e 150 o r so w h o c a m e a b o a r d . It w a s a blast, f o r all sides, f o r all generations. A t it again in t h e best interest of t h e golf course superintendent. His name will be added t o t h e scholarship fund, w h i c h supports continuing education in turf-related subjects. From here on in, it will be called the Troll-Dickinson Fund. Originally, the endeavor h o n o r e d the philosophical input of Dr. Lawrence Dickinson and it succeeded in t h e effort t o encourage outstanding students t o e n t e r t h e t u r f field. 'And stay there," Dr. Troll quipped. Since its inception in 1968, t h e fund has awarded 35 scholarships. Thus, it has been an important link b e t w e e n higher education and the golf course superintendent profession. It also has been ongoing, but because of only one man, Dr. "Troll. "Hey, if it w e r e n ' t f o r j o e Troll, w h o k n o w s w h e r e t h e scholarship fund w o u l d be today?" G C S A N E president D o n H e a m remarked, " l b be frank, he is the fund.
