Duggan, w h o is c u r r e n t l y building t h e n e w Peabody Municipal G o l f C o u r s e in Peabody, Mass., Is a m a r a t h o n regular. H e and o t h e r masters of endurance and dedication play as many holes as t h e y can in a o n e - d a y s h o w o f physical and mental toughness at t h e S t o w A c r e s C o u n t r y C l u b . Last year o n l y nine golfers played m o r e holes t h a n D u r a b l e D i c k . His t o t a l of 175 holes helped t h e m a r a t h o n t o p $1 million in c o n t r i b u t i o n s t o t h e f u n d in just Its seventh year of existence. In the latest roll call of Ouimet scholars, 32 recipients were headed toward the superintendent's profession. In t h e latest roll call of O u i m e t scholars, 32 recipients w e r e headed t o w a r d t h e superintendent's profession. As O u i m e t scholars, t h e y shared in t h e $ 7 2 5 , 0 0 0 t h e f u n d a w a r d e d in t h e 1999-2000 school year. T h e O u i m e t fund, t h e n , is close t o t h e hearts of all golf c o u r s e superintendents as it is in m o s t golf circles. In fact, superintendents and fund officials have established close ties since 1949, t h e first year of w h a t has d e v e l o p e d into a living m e m o r i a l t o A m e r i c a ' s first golf h e r o , Francis DeSales O u i m e t . T h e c u r r e n t G C S A N E president, plus o t h e r ranking superintendents, serves o n t h e fund's b o a r d of directors. F o r example, Charles D i c k o w of Poquoy B r o o k holds a place o n t h e present board. Originally t h e O u i m e t Fund w a s p e r c e i v e d as an academic helping hand f o r caddies. O u i m e t , of course, also c o u l d be t a b b e d , ' A m e r i c a ' s first c a d d y " because he f o u n d his w a y t o t h e game by t o t i n g golf bags f o r m e m b e r s o f T h e C o u n t r y C l u b . Incidentally, T C C was t h e O u i m e t family's neighbor, since Francis lived across t h e s t r e e t f r o m t h e club in Brookline. O u i m e t ' s caddying days fell at t h e t u r n of t h e 2 0 t h century. But t h r o u g h a c o m b i n a t i o n o f practice and observation, he s o o n b e c a m e a capable a m a t e u r player w h o elevated his g a m e t o t h e t o u r n a m e n t level w h i l e still in his teens. T h e r e f o l l o w e d t h e golf shots heard 'round t h e w o r l d . A f t e r c a p t u r i n g t h e Massachusetts State A m a t e u r title in 1913, he received an invitation t o t h e U.S. O p e n , c o n t e s t e d at T h e C o u n t r y C l u b t h a t same year. O u i m e t w a s 2 0 years o l d at t h e t i m e . T h e stunning result of that O p e n set A m e r i c a n golf history in m o t i o n . T h e unassuming O u i m e t , w h o a d m i t t e d he played o n l y because he w a n t e d t o w a t c h British i m m o r t a l H a r r y V a r d o n s w i n g t h e club, w e n t o n t o birdie t h e 71st hole and par t h e 72nd t o tie V a r d o n and c o m p a t r i o t l e d Ray t o f o r c e a playoff. T h e n e x t day he fired a 72 t o Vardon's 77 and Ray's 78 t o w i n t h e championship. Back a n d f o r t h he w e n t a l o n g a trail t h a t i n c l u d e d stints as p r e s i d e n t o f t h e B o s t o n Bruins and v i c e - p r e s i d e n t o f t h e B o s t o n Braves. T h a t Francis w a s loyal t o friends and c o n v i c t i o n s has b e e n c h r o n i c l e d earlier. In early t o u r n a m e n t successes, Francis enlisted a 10-year-old caddy, Eddie L o w e r y . " L i t t l e E d d i e " w a s his s o b r i q u e t . T C C m e m b e r s t h o u g h t O u i m e t s h o u l d have had an older, m o r e e x p e r i e n c e d caddy as t h e O p e n a p p r o a c h e d . But t h e 2 0 - y e a r - o l d u n d e r d o g s t u c k w i t h his little friend. A f t e r t h e big victory, L o w e r y w a s asked if h e ' d given any advice t o O u i m e t in t h e heat o f t h e battle. "I just t o l d h i m , ' k e e p y o u r head d o w n and e v e r y t h i n g w i l l be all right, Francis,'" L o w e r y said. ' A n d it d i d t u r n o u t all r i g h t . " L o w e r y , b y t h e way, b e n e f i t e d f r o m his close association w i t h O u i m e t . It w a s as if he w e r e t r y i n g t o e m u l a t e his h e r o . H e plunged into t h e g a m e as a player and m a d e strides t o w a r d O u i m e t t e r r i t o r y . First, he w o n t h e Massachusetts j u n i o r c h a m p i o n ship, played at T C C . T h e n he w o n t h e state a m a t e u r title. H e w e n t o n t o b e c o m e a successful businessman o n t h e West Coast. Steve Cadenellis C G C S , C a p e C o d N a t i o n a l C o i f C l u b : " T h i s c o u l d be a n o t h e r e x a m p l e o f t h e d r e a d e d situation w h e n y o u ' r e d a m n e d if y o u d o and d a m n e d if y o u d o n ' t . " L e t ' s face it. W e live in an e r a w h e n golfers w a n t e v e r y t h i n g t o be p e r f e c t in r e l a t i o n t o golf c o u r s e c o n d i t i o n s . T h e y w a n t e v e r y t h i n g t o be as g o o d as it can be. It d o e s n ' t m a t t e r w h a t t h e c i r c u m s t a n c e s . T h e y l o o k at everything, find perfection and ask t h e m s e l v e s , ' w h y can't w e be like that?' " W e l o o k a r o u n d , I m e a n ' w e ' as s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s , and d i s c o v e r t h a t in o r d e r t o have a chance o f reaching t h a t p e r f e c t i o n w e have t o be able t o utilize e v e r y g r o o m i n g aid w e can lay o u r hands on. A t this p o i n t w e find ourselves in t h e m i d d l e o f a q u a n d a r y because o f e n v i r o n m e n t a l pressures. W h i l e seeking t h a t level o f p e r f e c t i o n w e have t o please t h e golfers and e n v i r o n m e n t a l i s t s at t h e same t i m e . C h a n c e s o f that? Unlikely. " I n o t h e r w o r d s , it's a l m o s t i m p o s s i b l e f o r a golf c o u r s e t o t h e playing-perfect and e n v i r o n m e n t a l l y p e r f e c t . T h e r e f o r e , t h e r e has t o b e s o m e c o m p r o m i s i n g and, u n f o r t u n a t e l y , public o p i n i o n suggests t h a t playing c o n d i t i o n s d o n ' t have t o be p e r f e c t . T h e o t h e r p r o m o t e s t h e realization t h a t chemicals, pesticides, w h a t e v e r , can b e b r o u g h t i n t o t h e c o n d i t i o n i n g process if t h e y a r e a p p l i e d p r o p e r l y and u n d e r e n v i r o n m e n t - f r i e n d l y guidelines. M a y b e t h o s e guidelines a r e t h e result of inaccurate i n f o r m a t i o n . It's h a p p e n e d , that's f o r sure. Regardless, until t h e golf i n d u s t r y can c o n v i n c e e v e r y o n e t h a t its p r o d u c t does m o r e t o enhance t h a n h a r m t h e e n v i r o n m e n t , w e have t o a c c e p t restrictions, even as unreasonable as t h e y a p p e a r t o be. " S o m e h o w , golf has t o p r o m o t e its place as a p r o t e c t o r of t h e e n v i r o n m e n t , in a n o t h e r t w i s t o f reality, golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s have b e c o m e c h a m p i o n s of p r o t e c t i n g t h e e n v i r o n m e n t . W h e n I d o have a t u r f p r o b l e m , I s p o t it and t r y t o d o as little, chemically, as possible t o fix it. " I t h i n k a lot o f golfers k n o w w h a t is involved in t r y i n g t o evaluate playing c o n d i t i o n s w h e r e v e r t h e y play t h e i r r o u n d s . O u r s is an o u t i n g c o u r s e , so it is e x p o s e d t o a cross-section o f golfers. W e ' r e really o u t t o i m p r e s s t h e m w i t h t o p playing c o n d i t i o n s . T h e r e f o r e , I have t o k n o w w h e r e , w h e n , and h o w t o spray m y chemicals p r o p e r l y . T h a t puts m e in s o r t o f a pickle b u t I've adjusted t o restrictions. " W e have t o realize t h a t t h e c o n s u m e r t o d a y is a w e l l - i n f o r m e d c o n s u m e r . T h e y k n o w what's going on w i t h environmental issues and t h e y ' v e b e c o m e e n v i r o n m e n t conscious. So, I l o o k at t h e chemical r e s t r i c t i o n p r o b l e m n o t as o n e I s h o u l d handle b u t o n e I will handle. T h e r e ' s always that chance that chemical companies will c o m e u p w i t h s o m e t h i n g n e w and just as effective. So, I a m able t o p u t up w i t h m o s t r e s t r i c t i o n s because I ' m n o t as d e p e n d e n t o n chemicals as s o m e o f m y colleagues. "Regardless, w e have all kinds o f c o n c e r n s w h e n r e s t r i c t i o n s and m o r e s t r i n g e n t regulations a r e p u t o u t t h e r e f o r us t o a d h e r e t o . W e have t o w o n d e r w h a t t h e latest set o f rules w i l l lead t o . W i l l it lead t o t h e eventual c o m p l e t e banning o f all chemicals o n t h e golf course? W h o knows? ' A t t h e h e a r t o f all t h e a r g u m e n t s f o r and against use o f chemicals is t h e fact t h a t t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t always has b e e n a leader in using e n v i r o n m e n t - f r i e n d l y materials t o d o his j o b . In fact, 10 o r 12 years ago a lot o f s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s r e d u c e d t h e use o f chemicals in t h e i r m a i n t e n a n c e p r o g r a m s . It f o l l o w s t h a t golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s regularly s t r i v e t o utilize all available t e c h n o l o g y t o p r o d u c e t h e highest quality p r o d u c t . T h e golf c o u r s e c o n s t r u c t i o n b o o m in t h e 1990s r e s u l t e d in h u n d r e d s o f n e w p u t t i n g surfaces built w i t h t h e aid o f t h e latest t e c h n o l o g y in r o o t z o n e and plant materials. In e i t h e r case, t h e r e is significant appeal t o p r o v i d i n g a c c e p t a b l e quality at m o w i n g heights b e l o w 0.125" w i t h ability t o p r o d u c e ball r o l l distances in t h e I I *— 13* range. M o s t golf facilities are n o t in a p o s i t i o n t o r e c o n s t r u c t p u t t i n g greens. H o w e v e r , t h e y w o u l d like t h e benefits o f n e w t e c h nology, especially increased ball roll. As a result, golf c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s at established facilities have b e e n i n t e r e s t e d in i n t r o d u c i n g t h e n e w cultivars i n t o existing p u t t i n g greens. This desire t o a l t e r t h e species c o m p o s i t i o n o f t h e p u t t i n g g r e e n is n o t n e w . F o r years, s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s have a t t e m p t e d t o increase p o p u l a t i o n s o f bentgrass in m i x e d stands o f annual bluegrass (Poo annua) and c r e e p i n g bentgrass. T h e m a j o r obstacle t o successful p o p u l a t i o n shifts has been t h e o b t r u s i v e n e s s o f practices r e q u i r e d t o e f f e c t n o t i c e a b l e change. Simply, it has b e e n a challenge t o shift p o p u l a t i o n s in a w a y t r a n s p a r e n t t o t h e golfer. H e r e i n lie ecological principles t h a t rule shifts in p o p u l a t i o n s o f organisms. w e e d s c o u l d n o t be successful. This is a practical e x a m p l e o f " a l t e r i n g a n i c h e . " A " n i c h e " is t h e range o f c o n d i t i o n s r e q u i r e d f o r a species t o survive and r e p r o d u c e . In t h e e x a m p l e above, by drastically altering p H , t h e niche is a l t e r e d t o t h e p o i n t t h a t r e s o u r c e needs o f t h e w e e d c a n n o t be m e t . In a d d i t i o n , w h i l e severely w e a k e n e d , t u r f is still able t o e x p l o i t available r e s o u r c e s so t h a t it w i l l successfully c o m p e t e w i t h t h e w e e d s and survive. T h e result is a p o p u l a t i o n shift in favor of the turf. PLANT SCIENCE Researchers have suggested t h e r e a r e significant similarities a m o n g r e s o u r c e r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r bentgrass cultivars. It w a s i m p l i e d t h a t t h e existing cultivar w o u l d always have t h e c o m p e t i t i v e advantage b e cause it is established and already using r e s o u r c e s t h a t a n e w cultivar being i n t r o d u c e d w o u l d also r e q u i r e . T h e r e f o r e , it appears t h a t w i t h o u t substantial alteration o f t h e niche, t h e c o n v e r s i o n seems a f o r m i d a b l e challenge. Conversion Techniques A n n u a l Bluegrass Conversion. The process begins w i t h recognizing necessary r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r a l t e r i n g t h e niche. This includes t i m i n g o f p r o c e d u r e s , chemical suppression o f existing v e g e t a t i o n , mechanical surface disruption, i n t r o d u c t i o n o f t h e n e w cultivar, and p o s t - p l a n t care. Individually o r collectively, these techniques are used t o w e a k e n t h e existing vegetation, establish a s e e d b e d , and i m p l e m e n t practices t h a t f a v o r seedling g r o w t h . T h e c o n v e r s i o n process is similar t o p r e v i o u s w o r k c o n d u c t e d t o investigate techniques for population shifts of bentgrass/ annual bluegrass surfaces. Research o n conversion f r o m annual bluegrass has been primarily c o n d u c t e d o n fairway height turf. W h i l e it m a y s e e m easier t o c o n v e r t f r o m annual bluegrass t o bentgrass, based o n t h e previous assertion that different species may have different niches, annual bluegrass is w e l l a d a p t e d t o disturbed environments. Therefore, not only m u s t practices address existing plants, but also must consider contributions f r o m t h e s e e d b a n k w h e n t h e surface is d i s r u p t e d . Researchers have identified several i m p o r t a n t aspects o f t h e species conversion process t h a t involve cultural practices. T h e s e practices, such as clipping r e m o v a l , w e r e suggested t o result in a l t e r e d soil fertility, p o t e n t i a l allelopathic effects o f clippings, and r e d u c e d c o n t r i b u t i o n t o t h e seedbank.
