H e had a loving w i f e , t h r e e a d o r a b l e and a d o r i n g kids, and a m e m b e r s h i p t h a t ' o o h e d ' and 'ahhed' o v e r t h e golfing playground he'd created for them. A l o n g t h e way, h o w e v e r , his m u l t i p l e talents, w h i c h included an e x t r a helping o f a d m i n i s t r a t i v e skills, t h r u s t h i m b a c k i n t o t h e l o o k o f challenge and e x c i t e m e n t w h e n he w a s n a m e d e x e c u t i v e d i r e c t o r o f t h e b u r g e o n i n g N e w England Turf C o n f e r e n c e . It r e s t o r e d his faith in a d v e n t u r e , so t o speak, and plugged t h e golf course superintendent-heavy conference board of directors (Gary's n e w bosses) i n t o a n o t h e r d o s e o f p r e f e r r e d professionalism. A s it w a s , Sykes w a s i n v o l v e d f r o m t h e s t a r t o f t h e c o n f e r e n c e ' s e x p a n s i o n plans w h e n it s t r e t c h e d its o p e r a t i o n a l a r m s It's been sort of a whirlwind the last few months for us, but we've enjoyed it." " T h e f o u n d a t i o n w a s i n c l u d e d in s e t t i n g u p t h e a m b i t i o u s e x p a n s i o n o f t h e c o n f e r e n c e . T h e n w h e n it g r e w s o successfully a n d quickly, t h e b o a r d o f d i r e c t o r s d e c i d e d t h e y n e e d e d an e x e c u t i v e t o t i e e v e r y t h i n g t o g e t h e r . So, t h e y t a p p e d m e f o r t h e j o b and I find m y o w n professional life starting all o v e r again." T h e t r a n s i t i o n f r o m golf c o u r s e s u p e r intendent t o conference executive d i r e c t o r w a s instant since Sykes learned o f t h e o p p o r t u n i t y January I. It gave h i m just o v e r t w o m o n t h s t o t a k e charge and he k i c k e d o f f his p a r t in t h e p r o c e e d i n g s b y d o i n g w h a t e v e r y efficient e x e c u t i v e does . . . d e l e g a t i n g a u t h o r i t y . T h i s m e a n t keeping D a v e Rosenberg, t h e conference's t h r e e - y e a r s h o w manager, in place. Dave's e x p e r t i s e is m a r k e t i n g , a m o n g o t h e r things. W h a t e v e r , t h e Sykes/Rosenberg t e a m s p a r k l e d in t h e i r d e b u t w h e n t h e s h o w w a s staffed in M a r c h . " T h e r e w a s a t e n p e r c e n t increase across t h e b o a r d , " G a r y explained. " F o r t h e first t i m e in its existence, t h e s h o w sold o v e r 4 0 0 display b o o t h s . A n d t h e a t t e n d a n c e r e a c h e d a best e v e r 2 , 3 0 0 plus. T h o s e a r e g o o d g r o w t h figures and w e intend t o i m p r o v e on them. That's w h a t this is all a b o u t . " W h a t G a r y Sykes is all a b o u t is e v e n m o r e i n t r i g u i n g and p r o m i s i n g . So Set's begin at t h e beginning, w h e n playing golf w a s o n t h e b r i n k o f b e c o m i n g obsession f o r a y o u n g b o y hacking a r o u n d t h e small t o w n o f P o r t s m o u t h , R h o d e Island. A s an o u t s t a n d i n g high s c h o o l g o l f e r G a r y l o o k e d f o r o p p o r t u n i t i e s t o push h i m t o w a r d t h e P G A Tour and f o u n d o n e w h e n he w a s chosen t h e first high s c h o o l s e n i o r t o be a c c e p t e d f o r t h e first P G A l o u r p r o g r a m at Ferris State C o l l e g e in Michigan. But in a flip-flop m o v e , he d e c i d e d against g o i n g t h e r e . " I t h o u g h t a b o u t m y college c h o i c e real h a r d , " G a r y said. "I w a s t h i n k i n g P G A T o u r all t h e way, b u t I began t o w o n d e r h o w m u c h I'd g e t t o play in a place like Michigan w h e r e w i n t e r s are w o r s e t h a n t h e y a r e in N e w England. T h a t ' s w h e n I d e c i d e d t o stay h o m e and g o t o t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f R h o d e Island." "Even t h o u g h I'd lifted m y g a m s several notches and w o n t h o s e things, I wasn't all t h a t sure a b o u t t r y i n g t o m a k e m y livelihood playing t h e game. S o m e h o w , I had a change of heart. I realized I'd never m a k e it as a l o u r player, so I g o t interested in golf c o u r s e maintenance. F r o m t h a t p o i n t on, m y concentration switched t o turf management." Sykes c o n t i n u e d o n this n e w d i r e c t i o n by joining t h e g r o u n d s c r e w at G r e e n Valley. T h a t w a s in 1981. Just a f t e r he t h o u g h t his f u t u r e w a s set in stone, G a r y g o t a n o t h e r bee in his b o n n e t . This b o u n c e d h i m into t h e s o f t w a r e engineering business w h e r e he t o i l e d f o r t w o years b e f o r e again realizing t h a t e v e r y t h i n g he did that wasn't attached t o golf wasn't substantial. " I w a s still v e r y y o u n g t h e n (he's 41 n o w ) and I suppose I w a n t e d t o test all t h e w a t e r s b e f o r e settling into o n e field," he revealed. "At t h e t i m e G r e e n Valley n e e d e d an assistant s u p e r i n t e n d e n t . I applied and g o t t h e job. T w o years later t h e club elevated m e t o head super and f o r t h e n e x t 17 years, f r o m 1983 t o 2000, it w a s e v e r y t h i n g ! e v e r w a n t e d as a p e r m a n e n t position. T h a t is, until m y present situation surfaced." N o w that G a r y ' s first really big s h o w is behind him, he's plunged i n t o t h e task of p u t t i n g t o g e t h e r projects f o r t h e t h r e e state universities of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and N e w H a m p s h i r e w i t h t h e help of $ 1 4 0 , 0 0 0 funding p r o v i d e d by t h e c o n f e r e n c e . T h a t and planning f o r a bigger and b e t t e r 2001 s h o w w i l l k e e p h i m busy t h r o u g h t h e off-season m o n t h s . H e also declares that t h e c o n f e r e n c e has m o r e r o o m f o r i m p r o v e m e n t and g r o w t h w i t h t h e popular site of t h e c o n f e r e n c e , t h e Rhode Island C o n v e n t i o n C e n t e r , locked in place until 2005. O n t h e h o m e f r o n t , G a r y has t h e s u p p o r t of Diana, his w i f e , son Gary, Jr. (10), and daughters Leslie ( I I ) and Katherine (8). " T h i s w h o l e d e v e l o p m e n t has b e e n great f o r m e and m y family," he t o l d . "It's been s o r t o f a w h i r l w i n d t h e last f e w m o n t h s f o r us, b u t w e ' v e e n j o y e d it. N o w I k n o w w h a t satisfaction is." This is m y t h i r d year h e r e and w e ' r e o n l y a nine-hole course. But y o u ' r e talking 25,000 t o 30,000 r o u n d s o f golf a year. T h a t means t h e c o u r s e c o u l d t a k e m o r e of a beating t h a n t h e Sox d o w h e n t h e y play t h e N e w Y o r k Yankees. " B u t d o n ' t get m e w r o n g . I'm n o t a Yankee fan. In fact, I've lived t h r o u g h s o m e t o u g h t i m e s w i t h t h e Red Sox. You k n o w , w h e n y o u have guys w i t h similar interests y o u usually have guys w h o w o r k w e l l together. "Regardless, m y thoughts o f this season are positive. H o w e v e r , a g r e a t e r risk affecting g o l f professionals y e a r - r o u n d is right u n d e r y o u r nose (and, if y o u ' r e n o t careful, o n y o u r nose): skin cancer. Each year m o r e A m e r i c a n s a r e diagnosed w i t h skin c a n c e r t h a n any o t h e r f o r m o f t h e disease. T h e g o o d n e w s is t h a t this cancer, w h i c h affects nearly o n e m i l l i o n A m e r i c a n s annually, is easily c u r e d if d e t e c t e d and t r e a t e d early. T h e bad n e w s is t h a t t h e m o s t serious f o r m o f skin c a n c e r - malignant m e l a n o m a - is o n t h e rise and is increasing faster t h a n t h e rest. G o l f c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s have r e a s o n t o be c o n c e r n e d . A c c o r d i n g t o t h e American Cancer Society's D i r e c t o r o f Skin C a n c e r Initiatives M a r y O ' C o n n e l i , " P e o p l e w h o w o r k o u t d o o r s , such as farmers, lifeguards, and golf superintendents, have an increased risk f o r g e t t i n g skin c a n c e r because o f long h o u r s in t h e sun."
