" Duggan's p a r t in t h e appealing s t o r y o f C y p r i a n Keyes' rise t o p r o m i n e n c e surfaced as a d i r e c t c o n t r i b u t i o n o f putting the course together. "It was very r e w a r d i n g , " he disclosed. Even years b e f o r e he s t u c k his f o o t in t h e C y p r i a n Keyes d o o r , Duggan w a s w a r m i n g u p f o r t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n beat. W h e n he w a s t h e g o l f c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t at C o n c o r d C o u n t r y Club, he was i n t o land clearing b u t d i d n ' t k n o w it. S o m e o f t h e C o n c o r d g r e e n s w e r e starving f o r air c i r c u l a t i o n and D i c k launched a t r e e felling m o v e t h a t p r o v i d e d n e w life f o r t h o s e p u t t i n g surfaces. A t o n e p o i n t in t h e five-year plan t o r e j u v e n a t e t h e 100-year o l d c o u r s e , D u g g a n e s t i m a t e d t h a t his chain s a w s e r e n a d e had a c c o u n t e d f o r m o r e t h a n 5 , 0 0 0 d o w n e d t r e e s . To this day he claims t h a t t h e logging c a m p e x e r c i s e w a s r e s p o n s i b l e f o r saving m a n y C o n c o r d greens. It's b e e n in t h e w o r k s f o r 10 years, advancing t h r o u g h t h o s e years u n d e r t h e patriarchal push o f M a y o r Peter Torigian. T h e e n t i r e 2 5 0 - a c r e c o m p l e x s p r e a d (125 acres a r e b e i n g d e v e l o p e d f o r t h e golf c o u r s e ) consists o f a b a n d o n e d p r o p e r t y , s o m e landfill t u r n e d o v e r e x p e r t e n o u g h t o h o u s e f o u r holes and a n o t h e r p o r t i o n ( a b o u t o n e - t h i r d o f t h e overall a m o u n t ) leased t o t h e city by a division c o m p a n y o f Eastman K o d a k . D u g g a n d e s c r i b e d building o n t h e 2 4 - a c r e landfill p l o t as a m o s t delicate o p e r a t i o n . " W e had t o m a k e sure w e w e r e o n solid, e n v i r o n m e n t a l l y f r i e n d l y g r o u n d , " D i c k disclosed. " O n l y small b u l l d o z e r s w e r e used t o m o v e soil and such, as w e w e r e especially a w a r e o f m a k i n g s u r e t h e area had a d e q u a t e cover. It w a s a n o t h e r e x p e r i e n c e I've saved f o r t h e f o o t n o t e s o n building a golf c o u r s e . " M a r k M u n g e a m is t h e golf c o u r s e a r c h i t e c t . A c c o r d i n g t o Duggan, he has set u p a challenging t e s t o n t r e e - l i n e d , rolling terrain w i t h breathtaking views. It also lies a c o n v e n i e n t o n e - m i l e f r o m t h e c e n t e r o f Peabody. So, its accessibility earns a t r i p l e - A rating. " T h e r e ' s s o m e t h i n g else a b o u t t h e location," Duggan interjected. "Even t h o u g h t h e c o u r s e is o n e - m i l e f r o m d o w n t o w n , it lends itself t o a s u b u r b a n setting. A l l along I've felt t h a t I've b e e n b u i l d i n g a golf c o u r s e in C e n t r a l Park. It's t h a t beautiful a r o u n d h e r e . " T h e seeding began L a b o r D a y and t h e p r o c e s s has b e e n blessed by t h e succession o f Indian S u m m e r days t h a t f o l l o w e d . " H a v i n g 7 0 - d e g r e e days in late O c t o b e r has b e e n a big plus f o r us in p r o j e c t i n g t h e o p e n i n g t o n e x t year," D u g g a n e x p l a i n e d . " W e s t r u c k it rich as far as t h e w e a t h e r is c o n c e r n e d . T h r o u g h t h e e n d o f this m o n t h ( O c t o b e r ) , w e had seeded 90 percent of the course. And, at this t i m e , it appears m y p r o j e c t i o n is o n t a r g e t . A n o t h e r t h i n g w e ' r e planning o n is a full b l o w o u t o p e n i n g , t h e full 18 holes, n o t n i n e at a t i m e . " Duggan's p r e s e n t t i t l e is t h a t o f g o l f c o u r s e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t , b u t he feels m o r e like a g e n e r a l manager. T h a t ' s because "All along I've felt thai I've been building a golf course in Central Partss Dick Duggan he's b e e n t a p p e d as p a r t o f t h e c o u r s e ' s m a r k e t i n g t e a m . "It's neat t o be o u t t h e r e , t e l l i n g t h e public just w h a t t o e x p e c t and h o w e x c i t i n g this is," D i c k c o n t i n u e d . " W e ' v e had just a small expression of opposition t o the course. B u t m o s t o f t h e c o m m u n i t y has i n d i c a t e d that they w a n t it." Dick reports directly t o the mayor, b u t officially, he w o r k s u n d e r a c o m m u n i t y d e v e l o p m e n t d i r e c t o r . " I like t h i s , " he c o n c l u d e d . " I ' v e b e e n i n t o this c o u r s e w a l l - t o - w a l l , c o v e r - t o - c o v e r . I can tell y o u things a b o u t t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n , like t r u c k i n g in 100,000 cubic y a r d s o f m a t e r i a l , including topsoil. It's a l m o s t like it's b e e n m y baby.
