T h e p r o j e c t is a 4 5 0 - a c r e m i x o f soccer fields, baseball d i a m o n d s , golf courses, and assorted frills like a w o r l d - c l a s s h o t e l / c o n f e r e n c e c e n t e r and a ribbon o f 370 l o w - r i s e t o w n houses. This a t t r a c t i v e collection o f residences and facilities calls itself Q u a r r y Hills, it's located at t h e junctions o f Rtes. 3, 93 and i 28 in an area w h e r e t h e city and t o w n lines o f Q u i n c y and M i l t o n e m b r a c e . 'This thing is so complicated. I've been all over the world helping on the completion of other similar efforts. This exceeds anything in my resume. It's staggering." Gary Kessener Quarry Hills T h e Big Dig's i n v o l v e m e n t is crucial. Its excavation material, screened a c c o r d ing t o e n v i r o n m e n t a l standards, serves as t h e sub-base f o r t h e e n t i r e spread. It's e x p e c t e d t h a t almost 13 t o n s o f Big D i g excavate w i l l be used, it w i l l be built up by o n e f o o t o f clay, a layer o f glacial (clean) material, and finally a t o p p i n g o f rich planting soil. Kessener, w h o signed o n as superintend e n t o f c o n s t r u c t i o n f o r t h e golf course, says t h e overall c o n c e p t i o n o f t h e p r o j e c t awes even a p e r s o n of his b a c k g r o u n d and experience. "This thing is so complicated," he o f f e r e d . " I ' v e b e e n all o v e r t h e w o r l d helping t h e c o m p l e t i o n o f o t h e r similar efforts. This exceeds anything in m y resume. It's staggering." T h a t resume, by t h e way, reads like t h e index o f a geography t e x t b o o k . G a r y ' s w o r k has t o u c h e d d o w n in France, Tunisia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, Argentina, South Korea, Portugal, B o r n e o , and o f course, t h e USA. In fact, o n e o f his A m e r i c a n stops b r o u g h t h i m back t o his h o m e t o w n o f H i n g h a m in 1988 w h e n he w a s c o n s t r u c t i o n s u p e r i n t e n d e n t and c l e r k o f w o r k s f o r t h e rehabilitation and r e n o v a t i o n of t h e South Shore C o u n t r y C l u b . Kessener really g o t i n t o it t h e r e . His input included r e m o d e l i n g o f greensites, t e e i n g areas, and f a i r w a y bunkers. His i n v o l v e m e n t c o n t i n u e d in rebuilding a p u m p station, repairing t h e original irrigation system t o bring it up t o c o r r e c t o p e r a t i n g standards, and planting o f n e w turfgrass. Actually, t h e city and t o w n land are c a p p e d landfills, p r o v i d e d by t h e principal leasees o f t h e p r o j e c t , Q u a r r y Hills Associates. Thus, t h e e n t i r e area has t u r n e d i n t o one, giant landfill. C a p p i n g t h e Q u i n c y and M i l t o n landfills is part o f t h e 50-year ¡ease agreed u p o n by t h e parties. Regardless, Kessener sees a long r o a d ahead b e f o r e a t e e s h o t is s t r u c k o r a p u t t is d r o p p e d . T h e optimistic h o p e is t h a t nine hoies w i l l be seeded by this fall and s o m e kind o f o p e n i n g ( n u m b e r o f holes still u n d e t e r m i n e d ) w i l l t a k e place in 2002. T h e golf c o u r s e is t h e focal p r o j e c t o f t h e Q u a r r y Hills p r o j e c t and figures t o join t h e ranks o f o t h e r o u t s t a n d i n g layouts. F o r o n e t h i n g , it inspires a v i e w o f indescribable p r o p o r t i o n s . T h e c o u r s e is l o c a t e d o n t h e highest g r o u n d just seven miles from d o w n t o w n B o s t o n . It o v e r l o o k s t h e e n t i r e C i t y o f B o s t o n t o t h e n o r t h and B o s t o n H a r b o r t o t h e east. T h e v i e w s t o t h e s o u t h and w e s t z e r o in o n t h e Blue Hills Reservation, a w i l d e r n e s s state p a r k o f o v e r 3 0 , 0 0 0 acres. John Sanford, a Massachusetts native, is t h e c o u r s e a r c h i t e c t . Sanford is responsible f o r t h e design o f o v e r 25 golf c o u r s e s in t h e U n i t e d States and abroad. Most observers believe Q u a r r y Hills w i l l b e c o m e his signature c o u r s e d u e t o its b r e a t h t a k i n g v i e w s a n d s t r o n g p o t e n t i a l f o r challenge. O n e o f t h e holes w i l l b r i n g o u t t h e best in s o m e players, t h e beast in o t h e r s . F r o m t h e c h a m p i o n s h i p tees, it r e q u i r e s a c a r r y o f i 85 yards o v e r a w a t e r hazard and is also g u a r d e d by a n o t h e r w a t e r hazard just o f f t h e rear o f t h e g r e e n . A v e r a g e players, h o w e v e r , w o n ' t have t o face such a f r i g h t e n i n g s i t u a t i o n because tees w i l l r u n f r o m p r o v i d i n g a s h o r t e r carry over the w a t e r to one that offers a j o u r n e y parallel t o t h e hazard. A t t h e m o m e n t Kessener's c o n t r i b u t i o n is c o n t i n g e n t o n t h e d e l i v e r y o f m a t e r i a l f r o m t h e Big Dig. Its d e l i v e r y is o n g o i n g and is i n t o its f o u r t h year. O v e r 1000 t r u c k l o a d s a day have b e e n d r o p p e d at t h e golf c o u r s e site as t h e placing o f m a t e r i a l c o n t i n u e s in phases. A n d , as Kessener gets r o o m t o r o l l his e q u i p m e n t , he t r a n s f e r s each h o l e f r o m t h e m a s t e r c o n s t r u c t i o n m o d e l t o its s p o t in t h e actual lineup. "As I said, this is a c o m p l i c a t e d d e a l , " Gary remarked. H o w can w e establish m o r e contact w i t h o u r golfers w h e n it's o n e o f o u r goals t o get o u t o f t h e w a y w h e n w e ' r e d o i n g o u r jobs o n t h e course? You k n o w , golfers d o n ' t like t o see t h e c o u r s e being g r o o m e d o r i m p r o v e d . T h e y w a n t that, d o n ' t get m e w r o n g , but t h e y ' d s o o n e r it happen w i t h o u t w a t c h i n g it happen. "Overall, I t h i n k golfers have a g o o d idea o f w h a t w e c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e success o f t h e i r c o n t a c t w i t h t h e course. W e ' r e a public course and it's a little d i f f e r e n t f r o m a private c o u r s e w h e r e m e m b e r s seem t o p r o m o t e t h e super and h o w i m p o r t a n t he is t o golf c o u r s e operations. A t t h e public courses, w e have t o d o t h a t p r o m o t i n g by ourselves and s o m e t i m e s that's n o t t o o easy. 'As f o r organizational i n v o l v e m e n t , I ' m o f t h e o p i n i o n t h a t t h e P G A does a b e t t e r j o b o f p r o m o t i n g t h e golf professional that o u r national does w i t h us. O n e , I t h i n k t h e i m p o r t a n c e o f certification should be emphasized as a definite plus f o r n o t o n l y t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t b u t also t h e club o r course t h a t hires him. Second, o u r national T V ads have t o focus o n w h a t t h e individual s u p e r i n t e n d e n t does t o p r o d u c e t h o s e beautiful courses t h e t o u r i n g pros play. People should k n o w w h o ' s responsible f o r t h e c o n d i t i o n o f t h o s e courses. T h a t w o u l d be a b o o s t f o r t h e profession. " I n t h e end, I guess y o u d o w h a t y o u have t o d o . S o m e courses have o w n e r s w h o are w e l l aware o f the superintendent's i m p o r t a n c e in t h e overall o p e r a t i o n . M e m b e r s and o t h e r golfers are c o m i n g a r o u n d t o t h a t k i n d o f mentality, b u t s o m e t i m e s t h e y need t o be clued in o n t h e situation. T h e n it's up t o us t o b l o w o u r o w n horns, so t o speak. It's a t o u g h sell. W e ' r e in t h e m i d d l e . W e ' r e supposed t o sell ourselves b u t disappear d o i n g it. Yeah. " B r a c e Packard, CGGS„ T h e Stockb r i d g e C l u b : "Sad t o say, t h e r e ' s a certain percentage o f m y m e m b e r s w h o l o o k at m e as a blue collar w o r k e r . I ' m t h e o n e w h o has t h e grass-cutting job. I d o n ' t t h i n k t h a t w i l l e v e r change. M a y b e t h e n u m b e r l o o k i n g at m e that w a y w i l l change and decrease, but t h e stigma is t h e r e . "I t h i n k it's up t o us t o d o things t o p r o m o t e ourselves as individuals. I k n o w that I keep m y b o a r d i n f o r m e d o f w h a t a d v a n c e m e n t s I'm m a k i n g in education f o r the purpose of doing m y job better o r d o i n g w h a t t h e y ' d like. But as far as t h e b o a r d goes, m o s t o f t h e m realize w h a t I d o a r o u n d here, w h a t I'm responsible for, and w h a t I did t o give t h e m t h e best possible playing conditions. " I have a little public relations push I use here. I m a k e sure I ' m a r o u n d t h e golf c o u r s e w h e n m y m e m b e r s are o n t h e course. I w a n t t h e m t o see m e and k n o w t h a t I ' m h e r e using m y expertise t o m a k e playing t h e i r r o u n d m o r e enjoyable f r o m t h e p o i n t o f c o u r s e payability. 'As f o r t h e national, I t h i n k t h e y ' v e missed t h e boat. T h e y p u m p m o n e y i n t o T V ads b u t t h e y d o n ' t f e a t u r e t h e superintendents. T h e y should explain w h a t a c e r t i f i e d s u p e r i n t e n d e n t is and w h a t he did t o earn t h e title. O u r golfers are w a t c h i n g . T h e y ' r e t h e p e o p l e t h e ads should hit. T h e P G A does it right. But I d o n ' t see it happening f o r t h e s u p e r i n t e n d e n t . Even t h e fact t h e y ' r e (the national) researching this t h i n g ( m a r k e t i n g ) is a lot o f baloney. T h e y have t h e t o o l s t o p r o m o t e t h e i r p r o d u c t and t h e i r p r o d u c t is us." T h e 4 3 0 0 sq. ft. greens consist o f v e l v e t bentgrass. Fairways and tees are a m i x t u r e o f rye, poa, and bent. T h e 4 0 acres o f r o u g h are bluegrass and rye. A f t e r a t o u r o f headquarters and a dayand-a-half o f discussions, t h e students h e a d e d h o m e charged up and ready t o leap i n t o t h e profession. I left feeling g o o d about these students' enthusiasm f o r turfgrass m a n a g e m e n t and t h e i r c o m m i t m e n t t o t h e industry.
