T h e r e f o r e , diagnosis is t h e best w e a p o n w e have so far against a relatively n e w disease." Dr. S c h u m a n n i n f o r m s t h a t gray leaf s p o t is o n l y t w o years o l d . It is a selective a t t a c k e r in t h a t it affects o n l y perennial ryegrass. But " a f f e c t s " is an ill-advised t e r m . In reality, gray leaf s p o t takes o u t f a i r w a y s and tees in o n e t h r u s t . T h e r e is n o k n o w n c u r e f o r it o n c e it takes hold. T h e r e is an e v e n d a r k e r side t o it. It t h r i v e s in w a r m and w e t w e a t h e r . A t t h e t i m e o f this w r i t i n g , it has b e e n o n e o f t h e w e t t e s t s u m m e r s o n r e c o r d and t h e d o g days o f A u g u s t w e r e w a i t i n g in t h e wings. T h a t Dr. Schumann's c o n c e r n o v e r and input in t h e fight t o lay gray leaf spot t o rest is a m a j o r p r o j e c t goes w i t h o u t saying. T h e disease is believed t o have f o r m e d its r o o t s in t h e s o u t h e r n half o f t h e U n i t e d States and is m o v i n g n o r t h at an alarming clip. H e r dealings w i t h t h e disease include golf courses in R h o d e Island, L o n g Island, C o n n e c t i c u t , and Massachusetts. That's w h e r e her search and r e q u e s t f o r t u r f samples are c e n t e r e d . But this is such a w e t year it could surface at any time. " T h i s disease is so new, so y o u n g t h a t w e ' r e not sure about its survival properties. W e d o n ' t k n o w if it survives w i n t e r up here. Regardless, w e ' r e v e r y e x c i t e d a b o u t t h e possibility of a golf course s u p e r i n t e n d e n t c o n d u c t i n g a test of his o w n , o n t h e spot, if y o u will, and g e t t i n g a c o r r e c t diagnosis in a b o u t t e n m i n u t e s . " A n o t h e r pet project o n Dr. Schumann's agenda is pink s n o w m o l d . Again, she has enlisted the aid of another research assistant, Richard Anair, Jr., in t h e a t t e m p t t o c o m e up w i t h a m e t h o d of c o n t r o l l i n g a n o t h e r pesky disease t h a t makes maintenance life s o m e t h i n g less than enjoyable f o r m a n y superintendents. " W e ' r e past t h e diagnostic stage in pink s n o w m o l d , " she tells. " N o w w e ' r e looking f o r a w a y t o c o n t r o l it. Again, getting t h o s e samples f r o m s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s is vital t o o u r cause. W h a t w e d o k n o w a b o u t pink s n o w m o l d is that it likes t h e w e a t h e r w e ' v e had m o s t of t h e s u m m e r - cool and w e t . 'As all of us k n o w , w e a t h e r is so i m p o r t a n t w h e n it c o m e s t o pinpointing t h e t y p e of disease w e ' r e looking f o r and h o w t o c o n t r o l it. A n d , unfortunately, w e also k n o w h o w variable w e a t h e r can be in o u r little c o r n e r of t h e w o r l d . W e c o u l d find t h e r e m e d y f o r pink s n o w m o l d anytime. N e w chemicals can p o p up and a r e m e d y is at hand." O n e o t h e r p r o j e c t of n o t e is t h e overall search f o r fungicides that aren't really fungicides. " W e ' r e talking about t h e perfect c u r e f o r t u r f diseases," Dr. Schumann explains. "Remedies that t u r n on t h e natural defense c o m p o n e n t s of plants and bypass possible side effects of regular fungicides. " W e ' r e into c o m p a r i n g p r o d u c t s o f this n a t u r e and p u t t i n g t h e m t o t h e test of c o n t r o l l i n g diseases like dollar spot. This is o n e p r o j e c t that's appealing t o e n v i r o n mentalists. It's also appealing t o us because natural defenses against disease are preferable at any level." This, then, has been an exciting s u m m e r f o r Dr. Schumann, her staff, and o t h e r m e m b e r s of her t u r f disease-fighting t e a m . Each day Gail and her colleagues inch closer t o their selected goals. It all comes w i t h the golf course superintendent in mind, plus t h e s u p p o r t he c o n t r i b u t e s t o t h e efforts of t u r f research. With this summer's cool and wet weather making grass grow at an alarming rale and height, how do you keep up with mowing the rough on a regular basis? Anthony G r o s s o , P a u t i p a u g C o u n t r y C l u b : " T h i s is m y e i g h t h y e a r at Pautipaug and I can't r e m e m b e r any s u m m e r w h e n t h e grass w a s g r o w i n g like it is n o w , completely out of control. 'Actually, this is A u g u s t and I've b e e n able t o keep up w i t h t h e rapid g r o w t h until t h e last t w o w e e k s . O f course, that's w h e n w e g o t a little sun and heat t o instigate t h e g r o w i n g process. T h a t ' s w h e n I had t o g o t o e x t r e m e measures t o g e t a d e c e n t c u t of rough. " W h e n I say g r o w t h , I mean major league g r o w t h . " M y n e x t big p r o b l e m also relates t o m o w i n g , since t h e e n d o f A u g u s t is in sight and I'll be losing m o s t of m y p a r t t i m e o r seasonal help. W h a t this w i l l d o t o t h e m o w i n g p r o g r a m is p u t m o r e pressure o n t h o s e o f us still a r o u n d t o k e e p things u n d e r c o n t r o l . O n e o f t h e reasons f o r t h e i r p a t i e n c e is t h e lengths w e w e n t t o give t h e m an i n t e r m e d i a t e r o u g h area. T h a t s o f t e n e d t h e b l o w f r o m s o m e o f t h o s e h i g h - c u t areas. "All in all, w e ' v e m a n a g e d t o k e e p t h e c o u r s e in relatively g o o d playing c o n d i t i o n when the weather went screwy from a l m o s t t h e start o f spring. But as I said b e f o r e , if w e g e t c o n t i n u e d w i l d g r o w t h and m o s t o f m y kids g o i n g back t o s c h o o l , I have t o be w o r r i e d a b o u t w h a t happens d o w n t h e r o a d . T h a t ' s w h a t h a p p e n e d h e r e , causing a m o w i n g s c h e d u l e y o u w o u l d n ' t believe. H o w a b o u t eight h o u r s a day f o r five days a w e e k a n d t h r o w i n g in a Sunday night c u t f o r g o o d measure? "That's h o w w e ' v e been getting t h e grass c u t j o b d o n e . K e e p i n g up w i t h t h e height o f t h e r o u g h ( w e t r y t o h o l d steady at I ' / z " ) has b e e n just t h a t . M o w , m o w , and m o w until it gets t o t h a t height o r at a d e c e n t level so o u r golfers have a c h a n c e t o g e t back o n t h e fairway. " T h e r e a c t i o n f r o m t h e golfers has b e e n favorable. M o s t of t h e m a c c e p t e d t h e fact t h a t m o w i n g w a s v e r y difficult. In fact, o n l y t h e high handicappers had any gripes and t h e y w e r e m i l d . O u r l o w handicappers t h o u g h t t h e grass w a s t h i c k and lush. T h e y l o o k e d o n t h e situation as a challenge t o t h e i r abilities. ' A t t h e b o t t o m line, t h o u g h , w a s m y feeling this w a s g o i n g t o be a year o f t u r f disease. W i t h this t h o u g h , I s p r a y e d f r o m t o p t o b o t t o m a f t e r t h e rains let up. I l o o k e d at t h e m o w i n g p r o b l e m as m o r e o f a nuisance t h a n anything else. M y c r e w w o r k e d h a r d and g o t t h e j o b d o n e . N o w , I'm sweating the hot, humid s t u f f . . . w h e n disease s o m e t i m e s takes o v e r . " O u r aim w a s t o b r i n g t h e c o u r s e u p t o t h e p a y a b i l i t y standards o f past m e m b e r - g u e s t events. T h e r e are 12 guys o n t h e c r e w and t h e y w o r k e d long and h a r d t o reach t h a t goal. W h a t it m e a n t w a s having t h e m o w e r s g o i n g at all t i m e o f t h e day and night. W e e v e n b r o u g h t t r u c k s o u t at night, p u t o n t h e i r lights and k e p t t h e m o w e r s buzzing. " W e tried everything t o get t o that magic r o u g h height o f 2/2". W e changed directions, going t o w a r d t h e h o l e and t h e n c o m i n g back t h e o p p o s i t e way. It w a s n o t h i n g t o m a k e f o u r o r five passes a day through o u r roughs. In t h e end, I'd say about 8 5 % o f t h e roughs hit t h a t magic height. " T h i s has b e e n t h e w e t t e s t season t h a t I r e m e m b e r . Thankfully, o u r m e m b e r s u n d e r s t a n d t h a t this is an unusual situation and I t h i n k t h e y a p p r e c i a t e d t h e e f f o r t all o f us m a d e d u r i n g m e m b e r - g u e s t w e e k . Regardless, I'll still t a k e g r e e n and m u s h y o v e r hard and d r y like w e had last year. It just p r o v e s w e have t o be able t o d o t h e j o b no matter w h a t t h e w e a t h e r brings. Hey, t o d a y w a s t h e first day w e had c o n t r o l o f t h e grass.
