Hermanson draws on 32 years ©f golf course experience The only thing that's been at Gardner Municipal Golf Course longer than Michael J. Hermanson is the grass, and some aren't even sure about that. Kidding aside, it's no secret why Hermanson is entering his 33rd season as superintendent of one of the most popular 18-hole public layouts in the Northeast. "You've got to evolve with the times," aid Hermanson, who assumed the presidency of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England on January 13. "If you don't change with the times, you're gone." And Hermanson has seen plenty of changes in the industry since arriving on the scene in March of 1972. Sure, he learned a lot at the University of Massachusetts at Stockbridge, where he earned his associate's degree in ! 970. He learned even more during his placement training at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg. INSIDE . . . Page Calendar of Events ... 2 From the President ... 3 G C S A N E News ... 3 Turf Science . "You can have all the education in the world - education is very important - but there's no substitute for experience," he said. Hermanson gained that experience at an early age. As a child, he and his neighbor, current Winchendon Country Club superintendent Dave Comee, built miniature golf courses in the yards of their parents' homes, complete with rough, fairways, greens, bunkers, coffee-can cups, and flags. That's when they weren't playing golf. "Our dads would drop us off at 6:30 in the morning with a bag with a couple sandwiches and a soda in it and pick us up at 5:30," Hermanson said. " W e ' d go around and around and around." Like many kids his age, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do with his life, but that soon changed. When he entered high school, Hermanson needed a summer job and joined Dan Donovan's grounds crew at Gardner as a laborer. " W h o would have thought I'd still be here all these years later," said Hermanson, one of a handful of G C S A N E members with over 30 years of service. And like Ted Williams, he's never changed positions. That's not to say the field hasn't changed around him. "When I first started, your entire day was spent on the golf course," Hermanson said. "Now, you're lucky if you're out there half the time." When he's not on the course - or sorting out city, state and federal regulations, keeping up to date with water management and pesticide laws, and fulfilling reporting and filing requirements - Hermanson's spending time with his wife, Susan, and sons, 18-year-old Matt and 15-year-old Scott. "They've made a lot of sacrifices," he said. "Being a golf course superintendent isn't easy on a family." Hermanson is the first to admit the job wasn't always this tough. When he first came to Gardner, he had two sets of mowers, one to cut the fairways, rough and tees, and another for the greens, which were cut longer than a 1970s shag rug. Since then, the seven-gang tractors have been replaced with tri-plex mowers, the old red barn with a state-of-the-art maintenance facility, and an antiquated septic system with a $225,000 sewer tie-in. continued on page 2 u Everyone watches the Masters on TV and they wonder why their club can't look like that There's no doubt, expectations are at an all-time high, but that's where the business is." "Everyone watches the Masters on TV and they wonder why their club can't look like that," Hermanson said. "There's no doubt, expectations are at an all-time high, but that's where the business is. Everyone compares your golf course to the one down the road, to the one they played yesterday, to the one they played last week." While it isn't easy keeping a course with over 45,000 rounds in tip-top condition, that's just what Hermanson and his staff do. Even if that includes cutting greens by 4:30 a.m. Golfers at Gardner have been known to strike their first drives in the dark, hoping there's enough daylight to hit their approach. Hermanson's approach to his job has never changed, and like Boston's Big Dig, his work is never done. "A golf course is a living and breathing entity, which always needs to be improved," said Hermanson, who recently oversaw the construction of Gardner's new driving range and practice green. "You can't be stagnant in this business. W e ' r e always building a new tee, fixing a bunker or putting new drainage in." Like the courses it helps to improve and grow, Hermanson is confident the GCSANE will also continue to improve and grow. He takes pride in the membership's relationship with the MGA and NEPGA, and will work hard to keep those lines of communication open. Hermanson believes the GCSANE's strength is in its numbers, over 450. A member of the board of directors for the last nine years and golf chairman for the first seven, he has learned much from his peers. Some of the best advice he has received, Hermanson said, was gathered during a "working" round of golf at the GCSANE's monthly meetings. "The membership is a great sounding board," the new president said. "Sometimes they're doing something differently than you are and it may be something that's better. We've all made mistakes. I know I've made my share. But the only bad mistake is the one you don't learn from." During his two-year term, Hermanson will serve on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Golf Association and the Ouimet Scholarship Fund. He will also represent the G C S A N E at the national conference, which will be held this year in San Diego. Never shy to speak his mind - "I'm no as politically correct as some," he admits Hermanson will continue to pick the brains of his predecessors, Jim Fitzroy and Bob Ruszala. "I've got some big shoes to fill," he said. "I will continue to draw on their experience." Experience - with 32 seasons under his belt, Hermanson already has plenty of that. I would especially like to thank past presidents Bob Ruszala and Jim Fitzroy for their support and guidance. I will continue to draw on their experience. I feel my nine years on the board of directors and my 32 years as a golf course superintendent has well prepared me for this position. Those of you who know me realize that I may sometimes not be as politically correct as President Fitzroy was but hopefully that won't be a bad thing. W e all realize that our profession has and will continue to endure some negative press involving the alleged ethics violations of one of our members. I am confident that we will become a stronger professional organization in spite of this. ¿ j s W e have entered the PDI era and many ^ yther changes are contemplated at the national level. Your board of directors will make sure the transition will be a smooth one. GCSANE's past president Fitzroy's service on several GCSAA committees and his candidacy for national office will only help insure this. W e have a new building at our UMass Stockbridge turf research facility that needs our support and w e may be looking at the possibility of an endowed position that will be insulated from state budget cuts. Having taken severe "hits" in '03 as well as '0!, the greens at Tedesco C.C. were a natural to participate in the preliminary work by Dr. Roberts, as he sets his parameters for a full study to begin this coming fall and next winter. W e have seen it all in this period, from anoxia to desiccation and everything in between. The major difference this time around is that the research will be coming directly from the field. W e are presently monitoring the surface and air temperature differentials at three green sites prone to damage. Readings are taken every two hours, 24/7, using data-logging equipment. Plugs are extracted and being sent to U N H for study every 10 days, or immediately after an event that could pose a direct kill. W e are studying two greens covered with Ice Shield impermeable covers and one that has the standard sevenyear evergreen permeable cover in place. As if it were part of the game plan, the month of January has seen record breaking cold, to the degree that could damage poa or perennial ryegrass. These extremes are what dictate the necessity for such a study. Dr. Roberts and Jim hope that w e TURF SCIENCE can begin to draw some real correlations between weather/temperature patterns, surface conditions, and turf damage. Tie in site-specific conditions such as shading and w e can hopefully begin to gain further knowledge of the phenomena behind winter freeze injury. Remember in the spring of 2001 or 2003 when many of us were exclaiming that there appeared to be no rhyme or reason behind who did or didn't receive damage, or even one site versus another on our own courses? I beg to differ. Once w e really take the time to evaluate, patterns should begin to emerge. I know that for me, (and many other I am sure), it will be very advantageous to be able to determine the specifics behind greens damage. Last January, all I could do was warn my chairman that I suspected damage as early as the weekend after N e w Years, due to Readings are taken every two hours, 24¡7, using data-logging equipment. rain/ice events w e experienced along the coast. In early March, after removing inches of ice and using a Sawzall to extract samples, our fears were confirmed. What a great tool it would have been to have had a better understanding and some scientific backing to bring into an early committee or board meeting when damage is suspected. Information from the field, (for multiple seasons), is what will make this research credible and worthwhile. This will require the full commitment from a number of us, as well as a small investment in monitoring equipment. At Tedesco, the initial expense was just over $600 to monitor the three sites. At present, various funding options are being researched while Dr. Roberts prepares the presentation of the study for the appropriate funding committees. Please plan on participating in this important endeavor for the 2004/2005 winter season. Gary Liiccini Scholarship A w a r d winners.
