But he's not the only o n e . C u m m i n s d i d his h o m e w o r k b e f o r e a r r i v i n g at t h i s f o r m e r A r m y b a s e in M a r c h of 2 0 0 3 . He k n e w the place h a d a top-notch design and spectacular views; but he w a s n ' t fully a w a r e - a n d w h o c o u l d h a v e b e e n - of its u n i q u e c o m m i t m e n t to the e n v i r o n m e n t . Red Tail, aptly n a m e d f o r the birds that m a k e their h o m e on a n d a r o u n d the c o u r s e w h i c h o p e n e d in 2 0 0 2 , has b e c o m e the first Certified A u d u b o n International Signature Sanctuary in N e w E n g l a n d a n d o n e of o n l y 4 7 in the w o r l d . There are other courses that have c o n f o r m e d to m e e t the A u d u b o n ' s t o u g h s t a n d a r d s , but Red Tail w a s d e s i g n e d a n d constructed that way. N o w it is u p to C u m m i n s a n d his staff to f o l l o w A u d u b o n ' s g u i d e l i n e s o n wildlife conservation and habitat e n h a n c e m e n t , w a t e r quality m o n i t o r i n g a n d m a n a g e m e n t , i n t e g r a t e d pest management, water conservation, e n e r g y efficiency, a n d w a s t e m a n a g e ment. " For 1 0 0 years, Fort Devens w a s h o m e to t h o u s a n d s of soldiers. M a n y lived in the barracks that line the r o a d that leads to the g o l f course's m a i n t e n a n c e facility. W h i l e the barracks w e r e t o r n d o w n this s p r i n g , they stood as a r e m i n d e r of w h a t used to be. " W e h a d a g u y d e l i v e r fertilizer last w e e k , " C u m m i n s said. " W h e n he g o t out of his truck, he s h o u t e d , 'I lived in that b u i l d i n g right there w h e n I w a s six.'" Red Tail is d r i p p i n g in nostalgia. The greens have been Dry-jected, topdressed, rolled, verti-cut, g r o o m e d , a n d m o w e d to get t h e m to play as well as they are. It w o u l d be nice to have t h e m a bit m o r e f i r m , but c o n s i d e r i n g the w e a t h e r w e a r e h a v i n g they a r e d o i n g f a r better t h a n several years a g o before w e started these p r o g r a m s . In a d d i t i o n to the c u l t u r a l practices w e use to p r e p a r e t h e turf, t r a c k i n g the life cycles of b o t h insects a n d diseases is i m p o r t a n t f o r the h e a l t h of the p l a n t . Since M a y soil a n d a i r t e m p e r a t u r e s h a v e f l u c t u a t e d so m u c h , it is h a r d to tell w h e r e t h e pests a r e in t h e i r life cycles. This is a b s o l u t e l y " o n time." Normally we expect to see Japanese beetle adults a r o u n d the holiday, a n d this year is no exception. M e a n w h i l e E u r o p e a n chafers a n d oriental beetles have been flying f o r a w e e k or t w o n o w in most southern N e w England locations. W h i l e it is difficult to predict w h a t will h a p p e n this s u m m e r , certainly the g r u b p o p u l a t i o n s w e r e heavy in s o m e locations this spring a n d the potential exists f o r significant e g g - l a y i n g activity f r o m o n e or m o r e of o u r g r u b species. W e a t h e r patterns f r o m m i d - J u l y to the e n d of August will have a m a j o r i m p a c t o n t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of g r u b s . If t h e s u m m e r turns out to be hot a n d very dry, g r u b activity m a y be a little lower t h a n expected because s o m e of the eggs that a r e laid will desiccate a n d not d e v e l o p , at least in u n i r r i g a t e d turf. O r beetles m a y delay their e g g - l a y i n g until soil moisture i m p r o v e s , w h i c h m e a n s grubs will be slower to d e v e l o p in late s u m m e r . That just m e a n s the d a m a g e shows up later in the fall, w h e n it is t o o late to respond! It m i g h t be t e m p t i n g to w i t h h o l d irrigation in s o m e areas, h o p i n g to have a negative i m p a c t o n the g r u b eggs. However, it is p r o b a b l y m o r e i m p o r t a n t to keep the turf p r o p e r l y w a t e r e d to p r o v i d e the best a g r o n o m i c conditions f o r the grass to withstand s u m m e r stresses. G r u b s a r e pretty resourceful, a n d they will f i n d a w a y to survive! w B i s e l s s i m e r : A s a l w a y s , it is t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of the a p p l i c a t o r t o verify t h e r e g i s t r a t i o n status of a n y pesticide before a p p l y i n g it. If mostly larvae a r e present, use a m o r e soluble insecticide w i t h the a b i l i t y t o p e n e t r a t e t h a t c h . If m o s t l y p u p a e a r e present, then w a i t to c o n t r o l the a d u l t stage as c h e m i c a l s a r e not effective a g a i n s t the p u p a l stage. A d u l t bluegrass b i l l b u g s have been seen o n several courses. Keep a n eye o n bluegrass turf a n d p e r f o r m the " t u g test" by g r a s p i n g o n t o sterns to see if it has g o n e d o r m a n t o r has b e e n d a m a g e d by b i l l b u g s . If they b r e a k off easily a n d the b r o k e n ends reveal h o l l o w stems p a c k e d w i t h fine sawdust-like frass or feces, t h e n b i l l b u g s a r e causing the d a m a g e . Since the larvae a r e most likely in the soil now, t r e a t m e n t is m u c h the s a m e as f o r w h i t e g r u b s . Be sure to w a t e r in the a p p l i c a t i o n to get the active i n g r e d i e n t to the target. N o w is the t i m e to be c a u t i o u s w i t h practices a i m e d at increasing green s p e e d .
