He w ill give you good feedback on cart path locations. (Scott Lagana) • Paul: We are paving 8 ,0 0 0 linear feet of path right as I type and we are using PaveX out of M ethuen. C art paths are w hat they specialize in and it shows in the w ork and the way they get their 10wheelers around the course. They are very neat. (Jack O 'D onnell) Topic: Cell Phone Policy Ron Dobosz (Posted 5 /6 /0 5 ) I know most clubs, especially private clubs, have cell phone restriction policies, but I am curious w hat kind of policies superintendents have regarding their staff and cell phones. I allow myself, assistant, and m echanic to use them but not the rest of staff. I was told by other town departm ents that it is illegal. Please advise! Responses •N o cell phones, no headphones while operating equipm ent and w hile on the course. However, at the m aintenance building they are allow ed. (Anthony DeDominicis) • I do allow the employees to carry their cell phones. We d o n 't have radios so it allows me to keep in touch with them when needed. I also m onitor them to m ake sure they aren't abusing them . If so then they can't take them on the course. (Steve Cronin) • My assistants and m echanic have club-provided cell phones. My m e chanic has direct-connect only and assistants have direct-co nn ect and limited minutes on their cells which are m onitored by me on a m onthly basis. All other staff is not allowed to use their cells w hile w orking. (Pat Daly) • I have five guys with Nextels besides myself. M ine is the only one that o p e r ates as a cell phone, the others are just fo r direct-connect. All other staff is not allowed cell phones. (Paul Hallock) Topic: Proxy/Primo Kenneth Crimmings (Posted 5 /1 6 /0 5 ) I am interested in knowing the different rates and tim ings of your Proxy/Primo applications and results if any. We applied 5 o z ./M a n d 11 oz./A to fairways and 5 oz./M and 3 oz./A to greens on April 19. Fairway seedheads are m ini mal, seeing some seedheads on greens, but maybe a significant reduction? Responses: • Ken: This year was my first tim e applying Proxy/Primo; went 7 oz./m . and 1.75 o z ./A and found decent results, pro ba bly too light on both products but I am very hesitant on any growth regulators. Seedheads were definitely suppressed com pared to years past w ithout any Proxy, but the temps are so low, growth is slow and my poa is very ugly! (Ron Dobosz) • Ken: I used this year fo r the first tim e on my greens Proxy at 5 o z ./M and Primo at 8 o z./A on my greens and so fa r the results have been good. We definitely can see the difference over past years. We sprayed the greens on 5 /4 and are spraying a little liquid N today to get a little color back in them , plus we just aerified. Next year we w ill do fairways. (Jack O 'D onnell) • Ken: I applied Proxy to our greens on 4/1 9 at 5 o z ./M too. I did not go out with Primo. I sprayed half of a practice green as a show -and-tell fo r my owners, G M , and com m ittee members. I'm guessing we observed between 70% & 85% seedhead suppression on the treated half. Some o f the greens on the course showed only 20-30% whereas other greens resemble the control we o b served on the practice green. The Poa was slightly o ff color and I will probably include Primo in the mix in 2 00 6. I am also looking at splitting the application up next spring to two applications 7-10 days a pa rt at 1/2 rates. (Greg Tower) Topic: Rough Heights Jason Adams (Posted 4 /2 5 /0 5 ) I was curious w hat heights everyone is cutting at fo r roughs. We are currently m ow ing rough at three inches on a 2 90 0 -ya rd g o lf course. There are a m inority o f m em bers that w ould like the rough at two inches. Some are on the greens com m ittee. So any inform ation in heights w ould be greatly appreciated so that we can get a better consensus of w hat others are doing. Responses: • We are cutting our rough at 2.5" and a step cut of 1.25", we have been at this rough height fo r a year now. We used to cut the rough at 3" but all the m embers did was com plain. They still com plain it's too thick and I should go lower. (Jack O 'D onnell) • 1.5" around the greens and bunkers and 2" along fairways. I w ould go higher along fairways but I have to cut with N ationals and Tow Behinds and if it gets to long due to rain or vacations I am cooked. (Dave Comee) • Jason: At Essex the rough is 2.5". Outside of this it is hay. Tell the committee to stop being babies and hit the ball. At one time the rough here was 3" but during wet periods it was a little too penal. The 2.5" height seems to keep most people happy. (Pat Kriksceonaitis) • Rough is 2.5" everywhere, .875" step cut. Cut at 2" last year and they com plained it was too low. G o figure. (Paul H.) • Jason: I start out the season m owing at 2" with mulching blades and reach 3" by m id J u n e and then bring it back down fo r the end of season leaf mulching. M ow with Toro large area rotary. (Steve Curry) • Here at Rockport the rough is 2.5" and step cut is 1.25". We used to be at 2" rough and it to ok the m em bership a full season to get used to it. A lthough some o f their handicaps w ent up they love it now. There are several reasons w h y this m a y occur a n d suggestions a r e given below. It is extremely helpful to the diagnosticians if you provide t h e m with accurate case history i n f o r m a t i o n such as overall field s y m p t o m s , fungicides used w i t h i n the previous t w o weeks, w h e n symptoms first occurred, a n d past and prevailing environmental conditions. O n e other t h i n g to keep in m i n d , if y o u received t w o different answers, t h a n y o u can be fairly certain that in either case, detection of t w o different p a t h o g e n s occurred. You m a y have to use your o w n j u d g m e n t as to w h i c h diagnosis is m o r e i m p o r t a n t . Your o w n experience will be most helpful in this instance. D o n ' t hesitate to give us a call to discuss the results. Fungal Bisease Discrepancies: 1. The specimen h a d m o r e t h a n o n e disease, a n d different labs zeroed in o n o n e but not the other. A n e x a m p l e s h o w e d up recently; a b e n t g r a s s specimen was received that h a d take-all in the roots but anthracnose was also present o n the f o l i a g e . O n e of the t w o disease m a y have been m u c h m o r e prevalent t h a n the other ( d e p e n d i n g o n the specimen) resulting in the diagnosticians c o m i n g to different conclusions. 2. Two diseases are present but o n e is o n the w a y out, a n d the other is c o m i n g in. A d i a g n o s t i c i a n m a y have i g n o r e d o n e disease a n d focused in o n the other. 3. The plugs incubated d u r i n g transit, or the d i a g n o s t i c i a n incubated the plugs to try to force the p a t h o g e n to develop to facilitate the diagnosis. In this case, a p a t h o g e n m a y have been f o r c e d into a c t i v i t y t h a t w a s of little o r m i n o r i m p o r t a n c e . This occurs because most of the p a t h o g e n s are present in the turf all year. W h e n incubated they can be forced into activity a n d cause the d i a g n o s t i c i a n to c o m e to a w r o n g , or less accurate diagnosis. 4 . N o n - i n f e c t i o u s a g e n t s (physical injury, environment, agricultural chemicals, etc.) m a y be the primary cause but secondary pathogens of various kinds m a y be present. Depending on w h o is d o i n g the analysis, various conclusions may be reached. INternettocie P©puiafi@si D i s c r e p a n c i e s : 1. N e m a t o d e p o p u l a t i o n s are not well distributed in soils. This is especially true for ring n e m a t o d e s , w h i c h can be in dense p o p u l a t i o n s in a single soil core w h i l e absent in a n o t h e r core. If you send cup-cutter plugs to t w o different labs, y o u c a n e x p e c t t o see s i g n i f i c a n t differences in the t w o plugs. 2. C o m p o s i t e samples (15 to 2 5 soil cores mixed together) will give the most accurate a v e r a g e p o p u l a t i o n but even in this case, if a single lab runs the s a m e s a m p l e twice, the n u m b e r s will not be exactly the same. This occurs because it is difficult to t h o r o u g h l y mix the soil; a n d , only a b o u t 7 5 % of the n e m a t o d e s can be extracted d u r i n g the assay. The exact n u m b e r s of n e m a t o d e s are not i m p o r t a n t . If the n u m b e r s w e r e very h i g h , t h e n the n e m a t o d e s p r o b a b l y contributed to root dysfunction, if they w e r e low, they were p r o b a b l y not a factor. 3.
