A n d m a n y w o u l d a g r e e t h a t g r o w i n g - i n a g o l f course is a fastt r a c k ticket to a h e a d of g r a y h a i r . H e w a s i n v o l v e d in every a s p e c t of t h e b u i l d f r o m selecting grass types to c h o o s i n g a n i r r i g a t i o n system. Four w e e k s after b e i n g h i r e d , B a k e r ' s responsibility i n c r e a s e d even m o r e w h e n the p r o j e c t m a n a g e r w a l k e d o f f t h e j o b a n d w a s never r e p l a c e d . " i t w a s trial by f i r e , " Baker s a i d in a world-class understatement. Baker's r o a d t o G C N E b e g a n in 1 9 9 0 after he g r a d u a t e d f r o m C o l b y C o l l e g e in M a i n e w i t h a d e g r e e in p o l i t i c a l scie n c e . A f t e r a fruitless e i g h t - m o n t h j o b s e a r c h , Baker w e n t t o w o r k at T h e C o u n try C l u b , in B r o o k l i n e , M a s s . "I r e a l i z e d a n i n e - t o - f i v e office j o b w a s not s o m e t h i n g I w a n t e d , " Baker said. A short t i m e later he b e g a n t a k i n g classes a t University of MassachusettsS t o c k b r i d g e . For t h r e e years he w o r k e d f o u r days a w e e k a t the C o u n t r y C l u b a n d c o m m u t e d t o s c h o o l f r o m his h o m e in F r a m i n g h a m t h e o t h e r t h r e e days. H e e a r n e d a n associate's d e g r e e in 1 9 9 3 . Baker credits The C o u n t r y C l u b sup e r i n t e n d e n t Bill Spence f o r his success. He s a i d Spence g a v e h i m a lot of r e s p o n sibility in m a n y a r e a s a n d t h a t a l l o w e d h i m t o g r o w as a s u p e r i n t e n d e n t . By the t i m e the Ryder C u p r o l l e d a r o u n d in 1 9 9 9 , Baker h a d b e e n a n assistant sup e r i n t e n d e n t f o r several years. " T h e C o u n t r y C l u b really p r e p a r e d m e well f o r t h e d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g p r o c ess," Baker said. T h e f o l l o w i n g F e b r u a r y he t o o k the G C N E j o b . F r o m the start it w a s a n entirely d i f f e r e n t beast. " T h e b i g g e s t t h i n g is t h e m a g n i t u d e of a p r o j e c t this size," Baker said. The course takes u p 2 8 5 acres of the 4 5 5 - a c r e site. " E a c h h o l e is u n t o itself," Baker said. D u r i n g c o n s t r u c t i o n , 1 0 acres of wetl a n d w a s f i l l e d in, but the o w n e r s h a d t o g i v e b a c k at a 4 - t o - l r a t i o . O n c e w o r k on the project began, Baker realized t h e r e w a s a l a r g e d i f f e r ence b e t w e e n b u i l d i n g g o l f course a n d m a i n t a i n i n g a g o l f course. For o n e t h i n g , a n y s c h e d u l e is o u t the w i n d o w . " Y o u c a n ' t r e a l l y p l a n y o u r d a y , " he said. "I just d e a l t w i t h e v e r y t h i n g I c o u l d in a 12- o r 1 4 - h o u r d a y . " This is not t o say t h a t e v e r y d a y w a s a g r i n d . Baker s a i d he especially e n j o y e d w o r k i n g w i t h Erik Larsen, t h e l e a d a r c h i tect o n t h e j o b f o r P a l m e r C o u r s e d e s i g n . T h r o u g h o u t the c o n s t r u c t i o n , Baker said Larsen elicited his i n p u t . " H e w o u l d l o o k a t m e a n d say, ' h o w a r e y o u g o i n g t o m a i n t a i n t h i s ? ' " Baker said. Baker's g o a l w a s not to m a k e the course easy to m a i n t a i n a t the expense of Larsen's v i s i o n . John Kaminski, turf pathologist in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Connecticut, received the 2 0 0 5 Musser A w a r d of Excellence f r o m the Musser International Turfgrass Foundation. The a w a r d was created in honor of Professor H. B. Musser, w h o s e career in turfgrass at Penn State spanned four decades. The foundation began w h e n a group of turfgrass researchers, educators, suppliers, a n d managers decided to create a vehicle for promoting the future of turfgrass.
