He s i m p l y takes a w h i f f of the fresh a i r a n d t h i n k s b a c k to the days bef o r e he g o t into the g o l f business. T h e days w h e n he h a d to get o u t of b e d a n d a c t u a l l y g o to a n office. A f t e r g r a d u a t i n g f r o m G e t t y s b u r g C o l l e g e w i t h a business d e g r e e , the Bethesda, M d . native t o i l e d as a b r a n c h m a n g e r a t a b a n k a n d in a c o m m e r c i a l t r a i n i n g p o s i t i o n at a n insura n c e c o m p a n y . Sure, he w a s m a k i n g a d e c e n t living f o r he a n d Lynn, his w i f e of t w o years at the t i m e , but he d i d n ' t exactly c o m e h o m e every e v e n i n g w i t h a f e e l i n g of f u l f i l l m e n t . " H e w a s never a suit jacket a n d tie type of g u y , " Lynn confesses. So w i t h the f u l l s u p p o r t of his w i f e , the 31 - y e a r - o l d H e i n t z e l m a n d e c i d e d it w a s t i m e f o r a c h a n g e . He h a d a l w a y s l o v e d golf and a friend of a friend that was a s u p e r i n t e n d e n t at a local club t o l d h i m he s h o u l d e x p l o r e a j o b in the g o l f business. H e cut his h o u r s b a c k a t t h e i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y t o p a r t - t i m e a n d beg a n t a k i n g classes t o w a r d s a turf d e g r e e üüMtMiiikiikiiMyi^ "It's a scary feeling to go h o m e and fell your wife that you're leaving a ¡©b that was supporting you to take a position that w o u l d pay $7=50 an hour = . . There were times that I said to myself, 'What am I doing?'" "But she w a s so s u p p o r t i v e . T h e r e w e r e times t h a t I s a i d to myself, ' W h a t a m I d o i n g ? ' But she r e m a i n e d positive a n d kept telling me that everything would work out." T w o years later, H e i n t z e l m a n left the desk j o b life b e h i n d f o r g o o d w h e n he a c c e p t e d the assistant s u p e r i n t e n d e n t p o s i t i o n at Robert Trent Jones G o l f C l u b in V i r g i n i a . "It t o o k a w h i l e , but a b o u t o n e year into t h a t j o b I f i n a l l y k n e w t h a t I m a d e the r i g h t d e c i s i o n , " he says. "I actually e n j o y e d g o i n g to w o r k , w h i c h is s o m e t h i n g I never e x p e r i e n c e d b e f o r e . " A f t e r the Robert Trent Jones G o l f C l u b h o s t e d t h e P G A ' s President's C u p in 1 9 9 4 , Heintzelman was r e c o m m e n d e d by his boss f o r the h e a d j o b at Ipswich C o u n t r y C l u b , w h i c h w a s also o w n e d by C l u b C o r p at the t i m e . The Heintzelm a n s , n o w w i t h a d a u g h t e r , C l a i r e , in t o w , r e l o c a t e d to N e w E n g l a n d . In 1 9 9 9 , he m a d e the m o v e to T h o m s o n w h e r e , just by c o i n c i d e n c e , his cousin W e b b H e i n t z e l m a n w a s a n d still is the h e a d g o l f professional. W e b b a n d Karl knew each g r o w i n g u p , b u t n o w they a r e closer since they w o r k t o g e t h e r . other much " W e have a g r e a t r e l a t i o n s h i p , " Karl says. " G r o w i n g u p , w e p r o b a b l y o n l y s a w e a c h o t h e r five or six times a year.
