Enterprise (Published 9/27/05) W h e n Joe Rybka, C G C S , a n n o u n c e d last w e e k that he plans to step d o w n as course superintend e n t at T h o r n y Lea Golf Club after a 40-year run, head p r o f e s s i o n a l Peter N o r t o n o f f e r e d t h e p r o p e r perspective to d e s c r i b e Rybka's legacy to the club. " T h o r n y Lea G o l f C l u b is w h a t it is t o d a y because of Joe Rybka," said N o r t o n . " H e w a s responsible f o r most of the c h a n g e s to the course over the years - the driving r a n g e , the w a t e r i n g system, a n d the r e s h a p i n g of most of the holes. "Joe w a s g o o d at w h a t he d i d . Steve Tasho said w e never h a d a catastrophe a n d never lost a g r e e n because Joe k n e w w h a t he w a s d o i n g . He h a d p e o p l e call him for advice f r o m all over N e w E n g l a n d . That's h o w m u c h he w a s respected," a d d e d N o r t o n . W h e n Rybka c a m e to T h o r n y Lea in 1 9 6 6 , he t o o k over a course that w a s w h a t he d e s c r i b e d as " v e r y w e t , " a n d h e l p e d execute a five-year p l a n to install a n e w d r a i n a g e system o n m o r e t h a n half the holes. O v e r f o u r decades, every tee box w a s either flattened, e n l a r g e d , o r set b a c k to m a k e the course play longer, a n d there w a s always the a n n u a l battle w i t h winter, w h i c h always posed a threat to T h o r n y Lea's precious greens. " T h e black c o l o r i n g of the r u b b e r w a s important, a n d we definitely needed s u n f l o w e r seeds if there w a s ice," said Rybka, 6 7 , a W h i t m a n resident. "If w e h a d ice p r o b l e m s , it usually o c c u r r e d o n holes 7, 10, a n d 1 4 . " It w a s the utilization of these m e t h o d s that h e l p e d T h o r n y Lea survive the winter of 2 0 0 0 - 0 1 , w h i c h altered the schedules of m a n y g o l f courses in N e w E n g l a n d , including Salem Country Club, which h a d to d o a m a j o r , intensive, h u r r y - u p job o n its greens in o r d e r to host the U.S. Senior O p e n in June, 2 0 0 1 . A n o t h e r threat to T h o r n y Lea's layout w a s a n t h r a c n o s e , a destructive disease caused by f u n g i , w h i c h attacks v a r i o u s plants a n d s h r u b s . Rybka effectively neutralized anthracnose on several occasions by a p p l y i n g the right sprays. Perhaps Rybka's greatest claims to f a m e c a m e f r o m the a f t e r m a t h of a c o u p l e of h u r r i c a n e s w h i c h swept t h r o u g h the r e g i o n . In 1 9 8 5 , r e m n a n t s of H u r r i c a n e G l o r i a b r o u g h t d o w n trees, branches, a n d debris, w h i c h t h r e a t e n e d the start of the PGA N a t i o n a l Assistants C h a m p i o n s h i p a b o u t to be held at T h o r n y Lea. Rybka a n d his staff a l s o performed a major cleanup after H u r r i c a n e Bob in A u g u s t 1 9 9 1 . " G e t t i n g the course ready for the N a t i o n a l Assistants t o u r n e y w a s a key save," said N o r t o n . " H e g o t this place ready in a short p e r i o d of t i m e . " " O v e r a l l , I'd have to say we've been lucky t h r o u g h the years with the w e a t h e r , " said Rybka. " W e have c o m e out of the winters pretty w e l l .
