Cape Cod offers § variety of attractive chokes By Bruce V i t t n e r , © c e a n State G©Sf D o n ' t have all day to spend on the golf course? Wife and kids have other plans? O n e of the beauties of having almost 5 0 golf courses to choose f r o m is the opportunity to find some of them that don't take half a day to play. Recently we were on Cape C o d as part of a media familiarization trip sponsored by t h e C a p e C o d C h a m b e r of C o m m e r c e . " W e w a n t to give you a chance to see some of our smaller g e m s , " said G o l f Director for the C h a m b e r , G e o f f Converse, to the assembled media. He wasn't kidding. O n one day we traveled down towards the Cape's elbow to play Chequessett in Wellfleet in the morning and Highland Links in Truro that afternoon. What a day. Chequessett Yacht and Country Club is a scenic Whole course that was built in 1929. O n one side you have Wellfleet Harbor a n d when you get up to the third green a n d fourth tee you look out at Cape C o d Bay. The fourth is the signature hole, a par-5 that measures 4 3 5 yards. The elevated tee makes you think you can drive the green, but watch out for the marsh on the right. It measures just over 5 2 0 0 yards if you play 18, and there are different sets of tees for each nine. It is family-oriented with junior golf classes M o n d a y s , W e d n e s d a y s , a n d Fridays all s u m m e r . The t e l e p h o n e number is 5 0 8 - 3 4 9 - 3 7 0 4 and can make tee times well in advance. We went f r o m scenic to spectacular as we drove eight miles further down the C a p e to H i g h l a n d Links. Founded in 1 8 9 2 , it is the oldest of the 5 0 or so courses on the Cape. W h e n asked w h o designed it, the fellow in the pro shop said, "The cows a n d the sheep." It did r e m i n d rne o f B r o r a G o l f C l u b in S c o t l a n d t h a t h a v e sheep a n d cows roaming the course. The lighthouse is a focal point for the course but certainly not the only great view. W h e n you get on the second tee you will see that your drive is going to drop about 6 0 feet to the fairway that Page 6 liiiikllMyiMM^ goes off at an angle. The more you cut off, the shorter your second shot on this par-5, but beware of the wind. Highland Links is appropriately named. It is a true links course and it is on one of the highest precipices on the Cape. There w i l l be times t h a t y o u t h i n k y o u a r e walking on the moon. The third hole is a par-3, 160 yards that goes straight uphill. Make sure you take enough club because the ball will roll down quite a ways if you don't reach the green. Make sure you go back to the blue tee for the sixth hole. You look straight down at the Atlantic O c e a n a b o u t 1 0 0 feet below. Highland Links measures 5 2 9 9 if you play all 18 holes. I can't believe I had never played this marvel of a course, but you can be sure that I'll be back. You can b o o k tee times by c a l l i n g 5 0 8 - 4 8 7 9201. The last day of the trip was to Blue Rock in South Y a r m o u t h . Sports Illustrated called this Geoffrey Cornish designed course "The Country's Finest Par-3," a n d I certainly wouldn't argue. continued on page 9 ¡Fm golf courses have escaped injury this season, say USGM agronomists By J i m S k o r u l s k i , USGA Senior A g r o n o m i s t I he r e c e n t b r e a k in t h e h e a t a n d h u m i d i t y has been w e l c o m e d by all, especially those fortunate enough to be core a e r a t i n g their golf courses. The cooler soil temperatures and rain seem to have perked-up the turf and encouraged new growth in dormant areas. Is it an e n d to the t o u g h s u m m e r w e a t h e r , or just a brief respite? W h o can say, but we'll take the opportunity to begin opening up and seeding some of the damaged areas. Coastal New England areas remain very dry to this point, but we had better be careful for w h a t we wish for. Coastal storms in late summer have been known to occur. . . if you know what I mean. Turf throughout much of the region has suffered this season, and some has paid the ultimate price. Few courses have escaped without injury, but some areas were particularly hard hit. For many, this has been the toughest season in many years; record-setting heat, drought, or torrential rains all have conspired to bring stress and disease pressure to incredible levels. If your course escaped damage, consider yourself lucky, good, or maybe both. Maybe your neighbor had a threeinch rain that missed your course. R e g a r d l e s s , n o w is a g o o d t i m e t o evaluate the strengths and weakness of your course. That may be the biggest value of a difficult season. There is t r o u b l i n g news r e g a r d i n g annual bluegrass weevil resistance to the synthetic pyrethroid class of insecticides. It appears that weevil adults collected f r o m several H a r t f o r d , C o n n , area courses have s h o w n resistance to 8x rates a n d higher of the insecticides. The test was conducted by Dr. Rich Cowles at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in Windsor, Conn. Remember, the work is providing preliminary data, and more testing is required to confirm results a n d d e t e r m i n e t h e extent of resistance should it exist. The pyrethroid insecticides continue to p r o v i d e excellent control of adults at most locations in the region. However, it is always wise to rotate between insecticide c h e m i s t r i e s to p r e v e n t resistant populations. Chlorpyrifos a n d carbaryl are still available and can be used in a rotation against adult weevils. Trichlorfon (Dylox) a n d Spinosad (Conserve) have received registration for controlling larva. The synthetic pyrethroid insecticides are too valuable to lose to resistance, so use t h e m wisely a n d in c o m b i n a t i o n with other available chemistries, especially when dealing with the annual bluegrass weevil. The Florida-based National Golf Foundation reports that rounds of golf played have been decreasing since 1999. At Cedar Hill, rounds have dropped, but not that badly. " O n e reason is the cost of playing at Cedar Hill. The annual fees are relatively inexpensive. For the 62 members, it costs Stoughton residents $ 7 0 0 per year, and nonresidents pay $ 7 7 5 . The d a i l y p a y - a s - y o u - p l a y rate at Cedar Hill fluctuates. "We have a million rates. Juniors are $ 1 2 , seniors are $ 1 6 , regulars are $18.
