At 3 2 , Hightower has been a head superintendent for 10 years. "I was lucky to get a job when I did," said Hightower, a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of N e w England n o w in his f i f t h season maintaining the town-owned Westboro Country Club, a nine-hole municipal course located off Route 135 about 10 miles east of Worcester. H i g h t o w e r previously held the m a i n t e n a n c e contract at G r e e n Hill M u n i c i p a l G o l f Course in Worcester f r o m 2 0 0 2 - 2 0 0 4 , s e r v i n g as c l u b m a n a g e r ( 2 0 0 2 - 0 3 ) a n d superintendent (2004). In a d d i t i o n t o W e s t b o r o C . C . , H i g h t o w e r also has c o n t r a c t s to maintain athletic fields at Clinton and Algonquin Regional High Schools. Needless to say, he stays busy. Prior to winning the contract at Green Hill, Hightower served as superintendent there under another golf management group from 1 9 9 7 - 2 0 0 1 . Hightower actually became the head s u p e r i n t e n d e n t at G r e e n Hill b e f o r e graduating f r o m college. He left Clemson (S.C.) University early in 1996, his accelerated course load leaving him one course shy of his degree after three-and-a-half years. Sort of like a college basketball player jumping to the NBA after a successful junior season. "My professors encouraged me to take the job at Green Hill," said Hightower, who completed his degree in 1998. "At the time, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. They suggested I jump right in. I'm glad I did." A n a t i v e of W i n d s o r , C o n n . , Hightower w o r k e d at seven different golf courses before arriving at Green Hill, many of them internships while a student at Clemson. He even took a year off after high school to work at Forest Oaks C.C. in Greensboro, N.C. "I admit, there were a lot of things I didn't understand about the business when I first started out. I didn't understand the mechanical side of the business. Plus, I was 22 years-old and I had never managed a staff before." Michael Hightower Westboro C.C. ^iGLijdiÉ^LJiüi.iüAl.iiJAl^^ 'There is a lot more to consider when the money's coming out of your pocket." Michael Hightower Westboro C.C. " W h i l e I was never an a p p r e n t i c e before getting my first head superintendent job, I did have a lot of experience," said Hightower, who admits to "learning on the job" during his first season. "I admit, there were a lot of things I didn't understand about the business when I first started out," Hightower said. For starters, he d i d n ' t have a mechanic at Green Hill. "I didn't understand the (mechanical) side of the business," he said. "Plus, I w a s 2 2 y e a r s - o l d a n d I h a d never managed a staff before. H i g h t o w e r ' s c o n t r a c t to m a i n t a i n Westboro is much different than the one he h a d to m a i n t a i n G r e e n H i l l . At Westboro, he is only financially responsible for paying his staff and "upkeep" of the golf course. While at Green Hill, he provided upkeep while purchasing all the necessary materials. "Green Hill was only concerned with the c o n d i t i o n of the g o l f c o u r s e , " Hightower said. "They didn't care how I continued on page 2 continued 'al,- Chor PRESIDENT Patrick S. There's no telling where this will go or how long it will take, but the days of unlimited water use will most likely change in the near future. A special thanks need to go out to Ron Dobosz. The S&B tournament had to be rescheduled because of the tragedy in the Marrone family, and Ron and his committee pulled off a successful tournament. It wasn't an easy task. Dr. Jung, presently at the University of Wisconsin, will join the Turf Program at UMass-Amherst effective September 1, 2006. Dr. Jung received a B.S. degree in horticulture from Chung-nam National U n i v e r s i t y in S o u t h Korea. Subsequently he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in b r e e d i n g and genetics f r o m the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. He moved to Wisconsin in 1995 where he did post-doctoral work, and eventually was appointed as an assistant professor in turf pathology. In addition to providing solutions to practical p r o b l e m s f a c i n g the turf industry, Dr. Jung studies the molecular basis of h o s t - p a t h o g e n interactions, mainly resistance to f u n g a l diseases u s i n g c o m p a r i s o n s of t u r f g r a s s genomes with other members of the Poaceae, including rice, barley, and rye. Ultimately this will lead to a reduced reliance on pesticide applications, thereby reducing expenses and lowering environmental impacts while maintaining high quality turfgrass. Such was the flood of 2006. This deluge of water closed the golf course and tennis courts until Saturday the 14th. We still haven't fully recovered. The sand had eroded, entirely washed out, or was covered with silt and debris on all 82 bunkers. The 18th green was under water for seven days, the 5th and 7th greens under water for three days. The water was so high the irrigation pump motors were submerged for three days. The bridges on the 5th, 10th, and 11 th holes were lost for a week. The programs for the turf, trees, and flowers on the property are in disarray. Some applications have been washed out, some have been missed, and others rescheduled. It w o u l d be nice if the insects and diseases could get back on to a normal schedule. I could go on and on with the lost work days and setbacks but it's over and the sun is shining. On the bright side, the turf survived with m a n a g e a b l e d a m a g e . With the experienced crew we have we were able to nurse the turfgrass back to playing condition. Small amounts of fertilizer and fungicides and growth regulators have been a p p l i e d to help with the r e c o v e r y . The b u n k e r s h a v e b e e n worked on for the last 10 days and are almost back. The rough and fairway turf is growing faster than we can cut it. Additional mowings have been added sand. Fertilizer applications which are normally made in May will not be done until mid-June. These applications have to be made or else the turf will suffer mid-summer and beyond. Every effort will be made to do them in a way that least affects the use of both the tennis courts and golf course. If there is some interference with your g a m e let me please apologize beforehand. We are trying our best. UU Some applications have been washed out, some have been missed, and others rescheduled.
