December 2010 It was an Entire Club Effort By Jeffrey Urquhart If you were to ask the Superintendent at Hopedale Country Club, Tom Albert, if the 6-year-old clubhouse was in need of any renovations, he would have said no. That answer changed very quickly after Sunday April 19th. Like most of us, he tried to ignore several phones calls on a Sunday night in April. When he finally answered, an employee asked if they needed to work the following morning. Tom asked why and the employee replied, “Because the clubhouse is on fire.” He immediately called the necessary club officials to find out if the rumor was true and headed in to offer his help. Once he arrived, the clubhouse was in the basement and there was nothing to be salvaged. The clubhouse was a complete loss and was considered a crime scene until the cause of the fire was determined. Even though Tom’s main concern was the clubhouse, he was also thinking about the clubhouse grounds and the golf course. Tom quickly took notice that the fire department had to hook up to a hydrant across the 4th hole. Upon further investigation he was amazed that they drove around a tee box and the putting green with only some small ruts from the fire truck. Tom asked, “How did you avoid the tee and green so well?” The fireman replied, “I play golf here all the time.” Unfortunately, on their way back to pick the hose up (in daylight) the fire fighters drove over a valve box breaking the nipple and flooding the 4th hole. Tom was angry but found it hard to reprimand the fire crew considering the circumstances. I asked Tom what happened the week after the fire. What he proceeded to tell me was nothing but amazing. The building was entirely gutted hauled away by the following Tuesday and the golf course was open for play the same day with the Pro using a cash box in the parking lot to accept payments. The club was given money from their insurance provider to try get back on track during the re-building process. This money was used to erect a “tent city” which included one tent, one doublewide trailer, a cooking trailer, an office trailer and two outside port johns. All of these had to be placed on solid ground so Tom orchestrated the installation of a concrete pad, which would then be used as a wash area for golf carts once the tents and trailers were removed. The structures were delivered on Thursday and the club held a golf tournament on Saturday April 24th. Fortunately the golf carts made it through the fire untouched, but unfortunately the keys were melted in the clubhouse fire. They quickly notified their cart vendor and the problem was taken care of. Once the club was able to function, the club officials had to focus on rebuilding of the clubhouse. Tom attended several club meetings to offer suggestions and to see what sort of timeline they were up against. Tom’s Greens Chairman, Ken Mooradian, became a crucial part in the completion of the new clubhouse. He is in the concrete business and offered his help and contacts to get it done in the shortest amount of time. The framing company traveled from Texas in July and started right away. Tom and Ken told me that members would grab a cup of coffee and watch the crew work. They were so efficient; it was like poetry in motion. The on site general contractor reduced a 5 day roofing job to a day and a half. He knew the importance of getting the clubhouse done in a timely manner. continued on page 2 GCSANE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Club Effort - continued from page 1 PRESIDENT Patrick J. Daly, CGCS P.O. Well, that is exactly what happened. They opened the new clubhouse on October 10th. He learned a lot from this experience, but wishes it didn’t happen under those unfortunate circumstances.  Michael W. Please check http://www.negolfsummit.org/ for updates on the event and we are planning again to apply for GCSAA CEU’s this year. This is my final President’s Message and I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank the people who have survived my reign of terror. First thanks to both the current and former members of the Board who have worked so hard both supporting me and volunteered their time representing your best interests. I know the change to Jason Adams as President will be seamless and I appreciate the new Board members ( Scott Lagana and Jeff Urquhart ) coming on and giving their time. It’s very rewarding to know that the association will be led by such high quality individuals for years to come. Thanks also go to those past Presidents that I had the pleasure to serve under. Leaders like Bob Ruszala, Jim Fitzroy, Mike Hermanson, Pat Kriksceonaitis and last but not least Russ Heller all set the bar pretty high running our association over the years. Russ especially has been invaluable as a mentor and Past President, providing insight and guidance into how the Association has run in the past and never pulled any punches when we discussed the direction of the Association over the last two years. Thanks also to Julie Heston and Sharon Brownell. Julie has been instrumental putting the advertising and Newsletter together, especially these last few months, and Sharon always dropped everything to take my calls and answer my questions. They are the voices behind the Association we are lucky to be working with both of them. Finally thanks to my family. As many of you can imagine I found myself not only at a lot of meetings these last two years but also on the phone and email dealing with Association related issues. My staff (yes I consider my staff family ) always took care of business while I was away and I am deeply indebted to them for their diligence these last few years. The support I received at home was equally as impressive, especially considering that I am an absent parent anyways during the summer. I hope you all are as lucky as I am. I hope you can spend some time away from work over the Christmas break and on behalf of the entire Board may the simple pleasures of life including good friends, family, health, happiness and peace be with you and your families in the New Year.  I recently had the opportunity to join 27 other Superintendents from across the country at Wake Forest for the Syngenta Business Institute where we concentrated on non turf related topics ranging from financial to staff manangement. I highly recommend that if given the chance to apply for the Business Insitute you do it. Not only were the instructors engaging and informative, but the opportunity to network with your peers is well worth the time away from home and work. One of the more eye opening discussions I had at the event took place over cocktails when I learned about a national non-profit organization called Project EverGreen from it’s Executive Director Den Gardner. Project EverGreen’s mission statement is “to preserve and enhance green space in our communities for today and future generations.” What really peaked my interest is two of the programs that they run. GreenCare for Troops (http://projectevergreen.com/ gcft/) is a outreach program that connects local green industry professionals with men and women serving our country overseas. Club Cadet underwrites this program where hunderds of volunteer provide free lawn and landscape services. With SnowCare for Troops (http://projectevergreen.com/scft/) the organization has partnered with The Boiss Snowplow to provide snow removal for the families of troops overseas. I think that as a group these programs offer us a unique opportunity to give something back to the men and women who are serving our country. If you are interested in helping out please check out the links above or contact me. The December meeting was held at Hopedale on December 14th. Thanks to Tom Alpert and the staff at Hopedale for hosting at their new facility. In case you missed it RJ Iving spoke on Financial Planning, providing insighful ways to prepare ourselves financially for not only 2011 but also the years to come. It was another great example of the quality education that our Chairman Dave Johnson and his Education Committee provide for us during the winter. The GCSANE Holiday Party was December 12th at the Wayside Inn. A great time was had by all that attended and special thanks go out to Jason Adams and his committee for setting up the event. We are all looking forward to next year’s event. The Annual meeting will be hosted by Brian Linehan at Brookmeadow Country Club on January 4th. This meeting is important for all of our members as both a new Board and Affiliate Trustee are elected. Dave Johnson will also be running an open forum which will allow you to voice any concerns about the past year and what is happening in 2011. I hope to see you all there. Our March meeting will again be at the New England Golf Summit. This year’s event will be on March 30 at Andover Country Club. The specifics are being ironed out but the Patrick Daly, CGCS GCSANE President 3 GCSANE Slate of Officers for 2011 Government Relations Update for 2010 As 2010 draws to a close a number of bills affecting the golf course maintenance industry have been before the Legislature. In 2010 action was taken on three bills which would further regulate pesticide use in Massachusetts. Two of them were sent for further study, effectively killing their chances of being passed into law. A third bill to create a list of “the most dangerous pesticides” and then possibly a ban on that list has been given a favorable review by its committee and will reappear in 2011. The GCSANE has sent formal requests to the key legislators involved asking that this bill be rejected or at least that golf courses be exempted. Both Russ Heller and I spoke in person with our State Representatives at the annual Agricultural Day at the State House in April asking for their assistance. Another key piece of legislation that could affect our industry is Senate Bill 380, giving the Department of Agricultural Resources exclusive authority to regulate fertilizer nutrient content and create information and outreach programs. As it seems likely that some governmental regulation over fertilizer use will eventually take place, it would be preferable to have the DAR making policy based on scientific fact rather than individual cities and towns making decisions based on an emotional, conservation commission driven basis. We are in favor of this bill passing and it is currently being reworded with further input from agencies such as the Farm Bureau and UMass Extension Service. Look for this bill to move forward in the 2011 legislative session. Finally, we have brought the Cape Cod Superintendents Association and the New England Club Owners Association into our arrangement with our lobbyist firm for 2011. The GCSANE will remain in the point position for our Government Relations efforts and we will remain part of the Green Industry Alliance but we feel these three organizations can work together to promote the golf course maintenance industry’s positive impact in Massachusetts.  November 18, 2010 The Nomination Committee of the GCSANE, consisting of Richard Gagnon (Chairman), Brett Johnson CGCS, Donald E.
