November 2010 2011 New England Regional Turfgrass Conference and Show and a Tribute to Joe and Lonnie! By Gary Sykes, NERTF Executive Director Information concerning the 14th Annual New England Regional Turfgrass Conference and Show is just starting to come public as we head toward late Fall. With our first taste of cold weather and pucks flying around the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence again, it seems appropriate to announce that our Keynote Speaker for 2011 will be an American Hockey Legend even more than 30 years after the fact. Mike Eruzione‟s hockey career peaked in popularity as captain of the 1980 US Olympic Team in Lake Placid, New York. After defeating the all-powerful Russian Team in the semifinals, where Mike scored the gamewinning goal, the team went on to find a way to defeat Finland to win the Gold Medal! Sports Illustrated Magazine voted the win as the #1 Sports Moment of the Century. Mike currently works as Boston University‟s Director of Development for Athletics, has been a commentator for many Olympic Games for ABC and CBS Sports and is involved in Olympic Committee fund raising events. Many of our peers in New England are avid hockey fans, so we are hoping we will fill the room on Tuesday for Mike‟s presentation. Each year we try to fill the needs of superintendents and turf managers with ½-day seminars that can be valuable to your everyday management needs. We are offering these 7 different seminars on March 7, 2011: Maximizing Disease Control with Modern Fungicides, Dr. Lane Treadway, NCState. Basic Excel 2003 Training for Turfgrass Managers, Tracey Adair-Derning Water Conservation and Energy Efficiency Management for Golf Irrigation Systems Back to the Basics: Strategies for Managing Turf in Extreme Years, Dr. Mitkowski (URI), Dr. Wick (UMass), Jim Skorulski (USGA) Advanced Excel 2003 for Turfgrass Managers, Tracey Adair-Derning Got Water? Water Conservation Issues in Turf Dr. Ebdon & Dr. DaCosta (UMass) CPR/AED Training and Recertification American Safety and Health Institute Tuesday will be another full schedule put together with the help of USGA Green Section Agronomist Jim Skorulski that will include for the first time live webcast presentations by USGA Green Section Members Jim Moore and Pat Gross! Also, a first at our turf show will be a three hour presentation for Sports Turf Managers titled Synthetic Turf: Issues, Trends and Management. “I never thought we would allow it, but it is a reality apparently!” Following our Keynote we will open the trade show from 4:30-7:30 pm for the 14th time! Wednesday and Thursday will include a series of speakers from around the region concentrating on current challenges turfgrass managers are faced with from Summer Bentgrass Decline, Drainage, PGR‟s and Biostimulants, Disease Management, Weeds, and of course, Annual Bluegrass Weevils again! Hopefully you will be able to find a few new strategies to make the 2011 season better than some more recent years. The trade show will be going most the day Wednesday and Thursday Morning. Our successful show auction will take place again at 4pm Wednesday, with the popular Conference Reception sponsored by SYNGENTA and Harrells starting at 5pm. The third annual N.E. Turf Bowl will also take place Wednesday afternoon for students from UMass and URI competing for the third year. The highlight of the week will be what we hope will be memorable event for a very long time. We all spend time thinking about it ( some more than others ) and planning for our days away from the golf industry. I recently had the opportunity to celebrate one of my mentor‟s retirement and even though he‟s not a member of GCSANE I wanted to take this space to recognize Bob Reynolds who is retiring after 34 years at Newport Country Club. I started working for Bob in 1989. I think we all can remember our first time working on the grounds staff at a club. Those were the days where if you didn‟t pull your weight there was hell to pay. My first day at Newport started with running a triplex into a stone wall, breaking off a reel motor, and finishing it picking up grass clippings on the first fairway. Bob didn‟t fire me that day and I continued working for Bob for two summers and during the spring and fall while taking courses at URI. Bob welcomed me back in 1995 and I worked the summer when Newport held the U.S. Amateur. The course changed a little during my time away, moving from gang mowers on fairways and raking bunkers more than once each week, but even under the spotlight of the Amateur during a tough summer Bob had the course in great shape. The following spring he helped me get my next job at Pine Brook. To this day he‟s the same guy I started with in 1989 and I would imagine that those who have known him longer would say that he‟s never changed. Bob taught me a lot during my time at Newport and many of those lessons and values are held dear to me today. A firm handshake, a honest response to a question, being steady while under stress, treating people with respect…things sometimes taken for granted but just a small sample of what it takes to have a long, successful career. You should all be as lucky as I was to have someone like Bob in my corner and hopefully you remember to not only thank your own mentor but also pass along to those who are learning from you. Thanks Bob for not firing me that day in 1989. The November Nine Hole meeting was a successfully held on November 1st at Mount Pleasant. Jack Hassett and his staff had the course in great shape and it was followed by a presentation by Lycott Engineering on managing the health of your ponds and lakes. Thanks to all involved for a great day. Rich Gagnon is heading up GCSANE‟s Nominating Committee this year. If you have ever considered volunteering for a Board position you should give Rich a call to discuss it. I have found my time on the Board to be very rewarding and everyone should take a turn to see what happens behind the scenes at GCSANE. Some things you should know about over the coming months: It‟s never too early to start thinking about nominating a worthy member for 3 the 2011 Distinguished Service Award. Please review the notification in the newsletter and send your nomination to Membership Chairman Rich Gagnon. Our next meeting will be at Tom Albert‟s Hopedale Country Club on December 14. Although no golf will be played the education for the day will be a discussion on financial planning by guest speaker Robert Irving. Certainly timely information considering the current economy. The GCSANE Holiday Party is in the early planning stages. Stay tuned for updates on what is always a great night celebrating both the end of the year and the start of 2011. There is still time to take advantage of the Assistant Superintendent initiation waiver for 2010. The Board believes that this Association offers each Assistant an avenue for education and builds camaraderie for their future as Golf Course Superintendents. Membership applications can be found on the website under the “Membership” tab or by calling Sharon. As always, special thanks to Julie Heston for all her hard work on making the Newsletter happen. Until next month, may the simple pleasures of life including good friends, family , health, happiness and peace be with you and your families.  Patrick Daly, CGCS GCSANE President Call for Nominations 2011 GCSANE Distinguished Service Award By Rich Gagnon The Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England (GCSANE) annually selects an individual or individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the golf course superintendent‟s profession. This is your chance to nominate a fellow GCSANE member that you feel is worthy of the Distinguished Service Award for the year 2011. The nominee must not have been a recipient of this award in the preceding ten years. The Membership Committee welcomes recommendations for nomination. To propose a candidate for this program, please submit a letter of recommendation to the Membership Committee Chair. The letter should summarize the candidate's contributions and leadership to the superintendent com- munity both locally and nationally. The GCSANE membership committee will recommend a recipient to the GCSANE Board of Directors to be awarded at the Annual meeting in January 2011. Nominations must be received by December 1, 2010. Luccini, CGCS Finance Chairman Scott Lagana, CGCS Education Chairman David Johnson Newsletter Chairman Jeffrey Urquhart Golf Chairman Carl Miner Past President Patrick J. Daly, CGCS Update on Affiliate News The first term of Dave Wallace as Affiliate Trustee expires at the end of this year. Anyone interested in running for this slot or anyone who has a nomination should contact a member of the Affiliate Nominating Committee ( Dave Wallace (chair), Mark Casey or Dennis Friel) by Nov. 25, 2010. Upon receiving all nominations, Sharon will conduct an electronic election The Affiliate Committee will bring forth the top vote getter as the recommendation for the position and as always, someone can run from the floor at the meeting. If someone runs from the floor, paper ballots will be distributed at our Annual Meeting at Brookmeadow on January 4, 2011 by GCSANE Secretary Mark Gagne and results of the vote will be announced at the meeting. I‟d like to remind our Affiliate Members of a couple of benefits that remain underutilized. First, each Friend Member can submit a “company profile” type article for publication in our Newsletter. This is an outstanding way to introduce or reacquaint your organization with our general membership. Secondly, each Friend Member may request an email list of all our membership. Both these benefits are available upon request and I believe makes our dues structure much more cost effective. Please contact Pat Daly with your company profile and Sharon with your email list request.  Dave Wallace Affiliate Trustee Trustee (Scholarship & Benevolence) David Stowe, CGCS Trustee (Membership) Richard T. Gagnon Trustee (Government Relations) John M. Rose Trustee (Affiliate) TBD 5 2010 GCSANE Golf Meeting Recap As the chilly November winds swirl the last of the falling brown leaves past the window, the golf season already seems like a distant memory. Our meetings were held at a range of clubs including private, public, 9 and 18 holes, and a variety of golf formats as well. We scrambled, brambled and battled as individuals as well as, 2 and 4 person teams. For those not on winning teams, offered multiple opportunities to cash in on either raffles, skins, closest to the pins or long drives. We were educated by Scott Whitcomb on the rules of golf and how a golfer may be able to use them to their advantage along with an interesting review on recent rulings we may have seen on TV. Lycott Environmental offered the November attendees an informative presentation on Lake and Pond Management. The Assistant Superintendent meeting featured a look into the future of course management “Khaki is the new Green” by Robert McNeil as water resources and fertilizer/chemical use continue to be scrutinized. In total, the association hosted 8 regular meetings April- November, with the following player/attendee totals 35, 81, 21, 56, 50, 64, 24, 48. The high total was a joint meeting with the Cape, and the low total a 9 hole afternoon barbeque meeting in the middle of a brutal July. While the numbers went up and down a bit, the participation by Superintendents and Affiliates remained steady with most months averaging a 65:35 split in favor of the Superintendents. I‟ll take this opportunity to challenge each of our members to attend more meetings next year. With some effort, we can boost the overall numbers and target a higher percentage for the Superintendents. Committing to meeting attendance helps with scheduling, delegation, and should result in some mental health advantages. Grab a Superintendent from the club nearby or perhaps a former classmate, or someone that used to be on your staff. Our association is for us, and as Dennis Ryan (a Tree guy from UMass) told us “support your associations guys- no one else will do it for you”. Thanks to the Golf committee, this year‟s registration table volunteers, Sharon, Julie and the Newsletter team, along with Chris Donato for the help getting the meeting notices and information out. Sites for next year are in the works, if you would like to host a meeting at your club, or can offer ideas on improving the monthly meeting experience, please contact me.  David Stowe CGCS Golf Chairman GCSANE Upcoming Meetings GCSANE has the following meeting scheduled for the winter 2010-2011.
