August 2011 UMass Turf Field Day The UMass Turf program continued the long tradition of a Research Field Day at the Joseph Troll Turf Research Center in South Deerfield on July 21, 2011. Despite the hot weather, the event was a great success. Over 200 turf practitioners and their associates met and spoke with UMass faculty and staff, visited with turf industry businesses and enjoyed continental breakfast and a hearty barbecue lunch. UMass Turf showcased its wide range of research projects onsite as well as those being conducted at various field locations. As a bonus, attendees could choose to take part in a hands-on field exercise in which they learned about, used and provided direct feedback for a new Turf Fungicide Resistance Field Kit which is of particular interest to golf course superintendents. Current UMass work includes studies on the biology and integrated management of turf-damaging insects, short- and long-term weed management, pesticide exposure, fertility, drought management, as well as a range of National Turfgrass Evaluation Program fine turf trials. Projects address issues pertinent to golf, sports turf, and lawn and landscape care. In addition, several on-going studies focus on best management practices, environmental protection, and the conservation of precious natural resources, particularly water. Topics covered at the 2011 Field Day: Development of Crop Coefficients for Improved and Efficient Irrigation for Recreational Turf Postemergence Control of Grass and Sedge Species Reduced Risk Pesticides and IPM to Minimize Hazard to Golfers Vegetative Filter Strips for Mitigation of Golf Course Runoff Turf Diseases 2011: What We’ve Seen and What’s to Come Water Conservation for Golf: Bentgrass Species Selection and Wetting Agents Field Efficacy Testing of Off-Patent Turf Fungicide Products Breeding of Improved Bentgrass Varieties for Low Input Management Demonstration of New Monitoring Methods for Turf Insect Pests Robin Hayes and Heather Garvin of Hart's Seed participate in a scouting demonstration that featured the use of the "bug sucker" as an insect harvesting and monitoring tool. Turf Field Day 2011 was moved to midsummer from its traditional mid-June date in response to popular demand for an opportunity to view turf in the stressful summer period and perhaps better distinguish experimental differences. Observers were rewarded with clear examples of turf drought stress and timely incidence of key turf diseases including brown patch and dollar spot. Aerifiers are being fired up everywhere and any signs of the summer will soon be a distant memory. This is my favorite time of the year as the smell of leaves, apple picking with my family and maybe a long weekend in the White Mountains all put a spring back in my step. I am sure many of you feel the same way! Recently, Kevin Corvino represented GCSANE in the Ouimet golf marathon at Stowe Acres Golf Club. Kevin played 102 holes and raised $2,935 for the Ouimet Scholarship Fund. Well done Kevin. Our chapter manager search committee has recently met and is working diligently on fine-tuning the job description as well as the job announcement. The committee members are Michael Stachowicz (Chair), Mark Gagne -CGCS, Bob Ruszala, Jim Fitzroy - CGCS, Scott Lagana - CGCS and Chris Peterson. The position will be advertised in the beginning of September with a deadline three weeks later. Once the resumes are received, evaluations will take place by the committee and then reduced to the best ten candidates. Phone interviews will take place and the committee will present three candidates to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will work closely with the committee on choosing a finalist. Last month Ken Crimmings, CGCS hosted another August meeting at Marlboro Country Club. Yet again, the course was in immaculate shape! Kenny has managed to create an August tradition that so many of us look forward to every year. I hope it continues for many years to come! Our next meeting is September 19th at Glen Ellen Country Club with Jeffrey James as our host. Well, I wish all of you the very best going into the fall and hope you are able to take some time for yourselves!  Sincerely, Jason S. Adams President, GCSANE GCSANE Newsletter going to print………..Maybe. It’s up to you. jmartin101@gmail.com to let me know you’d be interested in seeing the Newsletter going back to a printed edition a couple times a year. Advertising will be available for an entire page!!! The cost will be reflected upon the number of members that show interest.  As a membership, would you like to see the Newsletter printed and mailed to you 2 or 3 months out of the year? Obviously it comes with a cost to the association so that’s where I need your feedback before we partake in this endeavor. I am hoping our Friend and Affiliate members will express their opinion, as it affects them the most. To keep the Newsletter successful for the association we would try to cover the cost of the printed editions with advertising that would be sold specifically for each issue. From speaking directly to you, I found that most of you were upset when the Newsletter was changed to the format that it is today. Well now is your chance to speak your mind. Please call my shop 781-828-2953, tap me on the shoulder next time you see me, or shoot me an email Thanks, Your editor Jeff 3 GCSANE Chapter Executive Search Update By Michael Stachowicz, Vice President, GCSANE The Search committee will consist of current board members Mark Gagne and Scott Lagana, past Presidents Bob Ruszala and Jim Fitzroy, and Friend/affiliate member Chris Peterson. The composition of this committee brings financial expertise, perspectives from future Presidents and past, Western Massachusetts based views, the experience of a past GCSAA President and his resources and lays the ground work for affiliate relations. So the association is doubling down on the volunteer nature of the association. It is an organization for those who care for golf courses run by those same individuals. The search process has been very important to us for determining the strengths and weakness of the association and what needs to be addressed in order to ensure that it is healthy. An Executive Secretary with the right skill set will help present the association in a professional manner and support the Board of Directors in a way that will help them cultivate the long term goals and vision mentioned. If you have any comments or questions please do not hesitate to contact me at mstach@dedhamclub.org.  As most of you know by now, Sharon Brownell, the association’s executive secretary, has announced that she will be retiring at the end of the year. I was appointed by the President to chair a committee to lead the transition. The first step was to develop an updated job description as the job has change a great deal since Sharon first got hired last century. We solicited associations across the country for their job descriptions and any other information that might be pertinent. It seems that superintendents not only like to help each other out when it comes to turf, but also in matters of the association. We also got input from current and past board members. A comprehensive document was drawn up. At the August 9th Marlboro meeting, the GCSANE Board of Directors met to discuss the proposed job description. It was fairly evident from the all-encompassing job description that the association would be looking for an executive director. There were many “soft” goals such as member and affiliate participation, relationships with allied associations, promote our members through media initiatives, support member employment issues, propose programs and new initiatives to the Board, meeting attendance etc. These and others are all very important issues for the association, but it was felt that it was the volunteer nature of GCSANE was essential to these types of ideas, rather than hiring one individual to take this over. This brought the job description back to earth and ended up being mostly administrative, accounting, newsletter production, web maintenance, and director support. This means that we are looking for an Executive Secretary to start, maybe someone who can grow into a director. A search committee has been approved. We will meet late August to share information gathered from other associations and like job searches. We will draft for Board approval a position announcement and a list of locations to advertise. We hope to start the actual search by the end of August. 4 Thinking About It By Don Hearn probably allowed you to come up with funds that could be used elsewhere. There is a long list for the "being creative" category. There are times, when I think about our business and profession, that I tend to think about the negatives and leave the good things our profession has to offer for someone else to talk about. Well, there are a lot of good things our profession has to offer and I'll mention just a few of them here. MENTORING - While some may think of this being a formal process by which a person becomes a part of our profession, I tend to think of it more as a process by which you, even unintentionally, create an environment where people are learning life lessons that may help them in the future. How proud have you felt when a former employee told you some of their success was because of the lessons learned while working for you. I never considered myself a "tough but fair boss." I always wanted to be known as a "caring and fair boss." I hope those who worked with me agree with the latter description. No one was made to feel that "failure was not an option." I know this is contrary to the mantra of many seemingly successful people, but, simply put, it wasn't and isn't my watchword. I felt this was especially important when dealing with young people working during the summer months. For many, employment on the golf course was their first work experience. Their parents would bring them to and from work because they didn't have any other way to get BEING CREATIVE - Our profession offers endless avenues for creativity. How many times have you come up with an idea for an adaptation to a piece of equipment that has made the task more productive? Mechanics and technicians have also been at the forefront of crafting the finished products for which you may have planted the seed. Maybe it was as simple as a tool holder on a mechanical bunker rake or a triplex greens mower. Or maybe an adaptation to a verticutter or rollers on mowing equipment. The list is long. What a great feeling I would have when Steve Lucas, the long time technician I worked with, would come up with a solution for making a piece of equipment more effective. How about streamlining a particular task to get it done quicker, easier and for less money. While you don't benefit directly from the money saved it continued on page 6 5 Thinking About It - continued from page 5 people mowing, raking bunkers, filling divots, and changing cups, starting a small project with the person on the crew who had the talent to add a special touch to it. All of these tasks and more are just a small part of the plus side of being a superintendent. there. Their lines didn't have to be like laser beams the first time they mowed a green. The straight lines would come after a few greens were mowed. Yes, some of these employees gave me headaches, a churning stomach, anxiety and other ailments, but I'm still happy I was in a position where I could possibly add enjoyment to their work experience. These are but a few of the positives of being a golf course superintendent. I know each of you can add many more. There are many aspects of our profession that make the really good parts stand out and overshadow the negatives. Keep in mind, no matter what your circumstances are, you're the one responsible, you're the artist who created that beautiful canvas that so many enjoy.  THE ENVIRONMENT - Not so much the environment on a scientific basis, but the environment as the workplace. What a nice place to be virtually any part of the day during good weather. Maybe for some even a rainy day is a good one. To tour the course on a warm summer morning knowing the irrigation system functioned like it was supposed to, looking at turf that's free of insects and damaging disease, watching 6 Ouimet Marathon Dear Members, I would like to congratulate Kevin Corvino and his caddy Nat Binns for completing 102 holes in the Ouimet Scholarship Marathon. Again, thank you to Kevin and Nat for their continued support in representing our Association. If anyone has any comments or questions, please feel free to contact me at jadams@bluehillcc.com. EPA Orders DuPont to Stop Sales of Imprelis According to green industry professionals and private homeowners in at least 22 states, trees affected by Imprelis first show brown or yellow needles before shedding their canopy and dying. The Imprelis label states: “Do not apply this product directly to, or allow spray drift to come in contact with, ornamental groundcovers, foliage plants, flowers, trees, shrubs, nearby crop plants or other desirable plants; or to the soil where potentially sensitive plants will be planted during the same season.” FIFRA is a federal law that requires the registration of pesticide products and pesticide-production facilities, and the proper labeling of pesticides. This requirement protects public health and the environment by ensuring safe production, handling, and application of pesticides and by preventing false or misleading product claims. For more information about the order, visit www.epa.gov/compliance . For more information about Imprelis and damage to trees, visit www.epa.gov/imprelis.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Aug. 11 ordered E.I. DuPont de Nemours (DuPont) to halt sales and distribution of its Imprelis herbicide amid concerns it has damaged or killed non-target trees in several states. Marketed for control of weeds, Imprelis has been reported to be harming a large number of trees, including Norway spruce and white pine. The order, issued under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), requires DuPont to stop the sale and distribution of Imprelis in the United States. and outlines specific conditions to ensure that the removal of Imprelis from the market meets legal requirements. This action follows EPA’s investigation into why a large number of evergreens and other trees have been harmed following the use of the herbicide. In its evaluation, EPA is investigating whether these incidents are the result of product misuse, inadequate warnings and use directions on the product’s label, persistence in soil and plant material, uptake of the product through the root systems and absorbed into the plant tissue, environmental factors, potential runoff issues or other possible causes. On June 17, DuPont issued a letter to professional applicators cautioning against the use of Imprelis where Norway spruce or white pine trees are present on, or in close proximity to, the property being treated. On July 27 DuPont acknowledged to the EPA that there has been damage to trees associated with Imprelis use and the company had developed an internet web page to provide information and updates concerning Imprelis use. On August 4 DuPont voluntarily suspended sales of Imprelis and announced that it will soon conduct a product return and refund program. A Group 4 herbicide, Imprelis received label registration from the EPA last year and has been on the market since fall of 2010. According to DuPont, Imprelis is labeled for use in 49 states and Washington, D.C. It was not approved for use in New York. This is a photo showing our filling setup for our fan at The Milton Hoosic Club. The cost of running power to the site was too high so they decided to purchase a gas-powered fan. I wasn’t a proponent of it at first, but to have a fan is better than not having one at all. It has a 25-gallon fuel tank (green box in photo); which can sustain the fan for 72 hrs running at 1700 RPMs (max is 2500 RPMs). We ordered this 15-gallon gravity fed mobile filling tank and mounted it on a frame to get it higher than the fan’s gas tank. It’s much easier than holding up several five-gallon containers to get it filled with fuel. An excerpt taken from the 1942 April Edition of the Newsletter SUPPORT YOUR NEWSLETTER The golf committee has felt that it was wise to schedule meetings close to Boston this year on account of the tire and gasoline shortage. The benefits of our organization will be more restricted than ever. There are two ways to over- come this restriction. First, by backing the NEWSLETTER. Send in a story about that trick you just discovered, or a picture of that gadget you invented' I never saw a golf course tool shed yet without a homemade machine in it.’ Why not tell us about yours? Last year we had a column called "Free Lifts". It was good while it lasted, but it petered out because of lack of interest and co- operation on your part and mine. We’d want to print everything new which you learn about disease control, etc, as soon as you learn it. If you can't get to our meetings to talk shop, why not write shop and read shop in the NEWSLETTER? The second thing to do, whether you can get to our meetings or not, is to get together with your neighboring greenkeepers for a weekly round of golf. If you don't play golf, you can chew the fat over a bottle of soda pop or what's in your icebox, then don't forget to jot down anything new or interesting that comes up and tell the rest of us about it in your NEWSLETTER. If you have a subject that you want discussed, let us try to help you. Remember, it is your NEWSLETTER. It's success or failure depends entirely upon YOU. Misodoulakis Memorial Scholarship Website: www.gregsrun.org E-Mail: gregsrun10@gmail.com To whom it may concern: The 1st Annual Greg’s Run 5K will be held on Saturday, October 8 at 10:00 am at Apponequet Regional High School (ARHS). This run/walk event will benefit the Gregory G. Misodoulakis Memorial Scholarship, established by his family to honor the memory of 2010 Apponequet Regional High School graduate Gregory Misodoulakis. Greg died unexpectedly a few days prior to beginning his freshmen year at UMass Amherst. The financial and in-kind support of local businesses and community members is vital to ensure the success of this inaugural event. While at ARHS, Greg was an engaged and dedicated student who volunteered many hours on behalf of the Apponequet community. He was a three season athlete – cross country, indoor track and spring track – and served as captain of the winter and spring track teams. Greg’s dream was to become a history teacher, and he aspired to live up to the words of the late, great athlete Steve Prefontaine: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift”. At the 2011 ARHS graduation ceremony, three seniors were awarded the first Gregory G. Misodoulakis Memorial Scholarship. It is our hope to award Greg’s scholarship to deserving ARHS graduating seniors for years to come. Proceeds from this annual 5K fundraising road race will be put towards his scholarship which is managed by the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity. Please join us in making the inaugural Greg’s Run 5K a memorable event that benefits current and future students of the Freetown and Lakeville communities. Any donations -- monetary, post-race refreshments or raffle prizes -- would be greatly appreciated. Attached you will find information about corporate and individual sponsorship opportunities. All sponsors will be listed according to their sponsorship level on the race webpage and will be recognized during race day activities.
