June 2011 A Fun Fact about this year’s S&B host Glen Misiaszek, CGCS By Jeff Urquhart Glen had put in a request to the GCSANE Board for a donation for one of his running events of which we graciously said yes to. This sparked my interest so I asked Glen how he got started running and where it has led him…… ―So my running saga started in the summer of 2008. The real reason that I started was I needed to kick a few pounds. I started at 210 and my goal was to get down to 180. I would have liked to have joined a gym didn't open early enough in the morning for me to work out and get to work on time and in the afternoon I knew it would be tough with our family schedule. Plus I didn't want to spend hours of my day in a gym. We had a treadmill in the basement and I started on that. My first run was about a mile but I stayed with it and ran pretty much everyday. The miles started building up where I was running 5-6 mile a night and the weight continued to fall off. After I hit 10 miles on the treadmill and surpassed my weight goal I needed a challenge to motivate me. It was then that I reached out to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of New England and received a number for the 2009 Boston Marathon. I had no goals for this race and finished in 3:36:10. I was now hooked and wanted to do it again. I have since run the 2009 NY Marathon 3:29, 2010 Boston Marathon (for MS) 3:18, 2010 Smuttynose Marathon in NH 3:23, the 2011 Melbourne Beach Marathon 3:24 (in FL while we were at the GIS show) and the 2011 Boston Marathon 3:27 (for MS). My best time was 2010 Boston Marathon where I ran a 3:18:17. My marathon goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon and for my age group I need to run a 3:15.‖ ―This year I raised $3,850 and my 3 year total for MS is just over $15,000. I get so much out of running for a charity, especially Marathon Strides Against MS that I hope to run Boston for them every year. Although I think the main reason that I run is so I can eat whatever I want and never worry about it.‖  Pictured: Tessa and Glen Misiaszek with Braden (age 7) and Max (age 4) “Be a valuable member to the club in making it your duty to increase the Club’s membership. Sharon has been a dedicated and important part of the association for 14 years. She has formed friendships over the years with many of us and will be a difficult void to fill. The Board of Directors will be discussing the formation of a search committee and with Sharon‘s help will begin the process of filling the position of Executive Secretary. I wish Sharon all the best in her future and appreciate all that she has done for this association. Last month we held our Scholarship and Benevolence tournament at Cohasset Golf Club. Glen Misiaszek, CGCS and his staff out did themselves as the course was impeccable. I can‘t thank Cohasset Golf Club and Glen enough for their generosity in hosting the event as we raised $15,000 for the fund. The recent violent storms that have devastated many towns in Western and Central Massachusetts are still fresh in the minds of many people. If anyone needs assistance or knows someone that does, please contact our offices or David Stowe, CGCS for any assistance from our Scholarship and Benevolence Committee. Well I hope all of you are enjoying this cool June weather and hope it continues through the season for everyone. TRUSTEE (Scholarship & Benevolence) Sincerely, Jason S. Motivated by the success of O'Hara's Lap-Band surgery, Zepp asked his doctor if his heart condition would put him at risk if he underwent the same stomach shrinking procedure. His doctor told him he'd be at risk if he didn't. So last December, he did. Unlike the ―Biggest Loser‖ on TV, O'Hara and Zepp don't compete against one another to see who can lose the most weight. They support each other. ―The more you talk with other support people, that's the best thing you can do,‖ O'Hara said. No longer does Zepp stop on his way home to buy a Drake's cake and chocolate milk. O'Hara hasn't stopped at a drive-through in six months. Instead they munch protein bars and drink a lot of water. Zepp takes only blood pressure and heart medication now. ―I'm much happier,‖ O'Hara said. ―I've got a new lease on life. I was on a bad path. I probably gained another 10 or 15 years easy.‖ ―I haven't felt this good in 30 years,‖ Zepp said. O'Hara's 15-year-old daughter, Ashley, can't get over how different he looks. Zepp's wife, Gigi, thought surgery was too drastic a step at first, but she supports him now and has dropped 40 pounds through dieting. Some people regain their weight after undergoing LapBand surgery, but O'Hara and Zepp are determined to keep off their weight. O'Hara wants to get down to 195 pounds, Zepp to 205. Neither has weighed that little since high school. To stay motivated, O'Hara keeps on his desk a photo of him at his heaviest with Annika Sorenstam when she visited Cyprian Keyes' Callaway Golf Performance Center three years ago. He weighs himself daily. The low number on his scale excites O'Hara as much as a low number on his scorecard.  You don't see as much of head pro John O'Hara and superintendent Dick Zepp at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club as you once did and they couldn't be happier. It's not that they don't work as often. It's that O'Hara and Zepp have combined to lose nearly 200 pounds. Over the last 20 months, the 6-foot O'Hara has dropped 109 pounds, from 322 to 213. Over the past eight months, the 6-foot-2 Zepp has lost 87, from 305 to 218. ―Everybody does a double take,‖ O'Hara said. ―It's amazing.‖ ―Some of the people here this spring didn't recognize me,‖ Zepp said. O'Hara, 44, of Shrewsbury has been heavy for much of his life, but a physical exam 20 months ago revealed he had developed Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and hemochromatisis, an incurable disease in which too much iron builds up in your body. O'Hara's iron level was 10 times higher than normal. Medication controlled the first three conditions, but not the hemochromatisis, which can cause organs to fail. So O'Hara gave up red meat and shellfish and had a pint of blood extracted each week for 22 weeks to lower his iron level. Not wanting to continue blood work for the rest of his life, in April 2010 O'Hara underwent Lap-Band surgery, a laparoscopic procedure in which an adjustable silicone belt or collar is placed around the upper part of the stomach to separate the stomach into two sections. The upper section forms a pouch the size of a golf ball — how appropriate — and has a restricted opening to the main part of the stomach. This small pouch and restriction force the patient to eat slowly and have small quantities of food. PGA Tour golfer John Daly lost 115 pounds after undergoing the same surgery in early 2009. O'Hara eats mostly chicken, haddock, swordfish, fruits and vegetables, but not a lot of anything. It used to take him five minutes to wolf down a big meal. Now it takes him 30 to finish a small one. His diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are gone. So is his sleep apnea. Instead of being tired all the time, he's full of energy. Now that he's lost so much weight, people tell O'Hara he looks more like his brother Terry, Cyprian Keyes' former director of golf who weighs about 170 pounds. When he was big, O'Hara slid back and forth during his golf swing, but now he's working with Jack Gale on turning his hips properly. ―I'm trying to get back to the days like in high school,‖ O'Hara said, ―trying to get back to where I could play really good. I'm getting close.‖ O'Hara rates his weight loss as important to him as the 1985 state high school individual championship he won at Green Hill as a Burncoat High student. Zepp, 60, of Northbridge weighed as much as 325 and has taken medication for high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and an irregular heartbeat. Four years ago, he had a defibrillator-pacemaker installed, and the device probably Written by Bill Doyle who can be reached by e-mail at wdoyle@telegram.com. Bubba wore the Tour Profile natural golf socks en route to winning the PGA TOUR‘s Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana in Avondale. No wonder I‘ve been having a problem with my footwork. I‘ve been wearing the wrong socks! As I continued reading I found out my clubs have the wrong shafts. I didn‘t know that True Temper shafts had been winning on the PGA, Nationwide and European Tours while I had been struggling to perfect my game using shafts that came with the clubs I bought years ago. I wish I had known my clubs had the wrong shafts. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I thought purchasing a new towel, new socks and new shafts were all I needed to turn my game around, I find out I should be using a different ball. This will take a little more time to figure out since I‘ll have to have my swing speed measured to find out which ball will be the one to put me over the top. So, now recognizing what‘s really needed to improve my golf game, I feel a lot better knowing lower scores could be related to the faulty equipment I‗ve been using all these years. At the very least I can stop blaming myself for lack of ability.  Finally, I now realize why my golf game has reached such a low point. I can‘t remember when I last played so poorly as I have over the past month. That doesn‘t mean I ever played very well, but at least I could hit the ball in the air. My game now is similar to bowling. Seems the best I can do is roll the ball along the fairway and not very far at that. Sometimes I hit it less than the length of a bowling alley. But, I think I‘ve found a cure. Based on information I‘ve been reading on golf blogs there‘s a towel available that has won five times on the PGA TOUR. Yesiree – that‘s right, a towel. All this time I had been thinking that my game had left me. I didn‘t realize a towel could fix my problem. This is what the maker of this little puppy has to say about its product. The Players Towel -- featuring high performance microfiber waffle technology, continued its domination of professional golf at the Crowne Plaza invitational at Colonial by recording 4 top 10 finishes…at the SYBASE match Play Championship. Obviously, changing from my plain cotton towel to this high tech number will no doubt knock me into the single handicap division. 4 Scholarship & Benevolence Tournament May 23, 2011 Cohasset Golf Club Host: Glen Misiaszek, CGCS 1st Place Gross: Jason Dogiewicz & (Blind Draw - Mike Luccini) - 72 2nd Place Gross: Ron Dobosz & Matt Santos - 74 1st Place Net: Jay McGrail & Jake Silva - 64 2nd Place Net: *Glen Misiaszek & Don DeMichele - 65 3rd Place Net: Patrick VanVleck & Kenny Munsey - 65 4th place Net: Steve Tassini & Bob Galvin - 67 5th Place Net: *Kevin Osgood & David Stowe - 68 Closest to the hole #2: Dave Travers 12’11” Closest to the hole #6: Bob Healey 2’5” Closest to the hole #12: Rick Yankum 24’ Closest to the hole #15: Dave Johnson 13’6” Closest to the hole #13 in 2 strokes (Sponsored by Plant Food Company) Don DeMichele 10” Long Drive (Men) #4: Bob Galvin * Denotes Match of Cards Long Drive (Women) #4: Debbie Neipris 5 Photos from S&B Tournament - Cohasset Golf Club Photo Credit: Jeff Urquhart 6 The Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England would like to thank the 19th Annual Scholarship and Benevolence Sponsors May 23, 2011 Cohasset Golf Club Host Superintendent: Glen Misiaszek, CGCS Platinum Sponsors ($1000.00) BASF Turf & Ornamental Tom Irwin, Inc.
