November 2012 6th Annual Assistants Appreciation Day A short synopsis so that next year you won’t think twice about sending yours!!! By: Jeff Urquhart, Editor This year’s event was played at the stunning, well manicured, elite, tournament ready golf course known as Milton Hoosic Golf Club. A virtual orgasm to the eyes from the moment you drive through the entrance pillars until the time you putt out on the 18th green. A course filled with amazing vistas that only an 1891 est. 9-holer could provide. For me, it was a no brainer to send my loyal, hard working and dedicated assistant to the event. You might say I’m a tad partial to the Hoosic…deal with it. It wouldn’t matter where it was, I’d still send my assistant. After receiving the final number on those who were registered I asked Don Hearn how many actual Assistants we have as members of GCSANE. The total number of Assistant members is 68, yes 68. Guess how many played in the appreciation day, maybe half you’d say or two-thirds at best? Nope, 25 got the opportunity to play. Hurricane Sandy and her aftermath, which forced local Superintendents to keep their Assistants on property to help clean up, shadowed the event. I was hoping the time of year would still convince the Supers to send their Assistants, but never the less I was wrong. The other 43 guys and gals missed out on a great day, ask anyone who played. There are several people to thank who made this happen. The Hoosic grounds crew had a couple great additions during the morning set up for the event. Kevin Corvino and two of his guys from Norfolk Golf Club helped us out. Kevin did set-up, which I found out wasn’t the best idea; he put a pin on 5 that was out of this world! He made us all feel like true golfers, bitching and moaning about pin locations, and we all thank him for that. Steve "Stevo" Marinelli and Merve "Scoobie" Thomas helped mow greens before the 9 AM shotgun. They were all a great help to the participants and us. The others I’d like to personally thank contributed a total of $1750 towards the day. After a few phone calls, emails and some “slight of the hand” Early Order commitments we were able to get a great showing of contributions from our local Friends and Affiliates of GCSANE. Their generosity enabled the event to pay out just over a thousand dollars in prizes! The amounts ranged from $100 to $500, heck the fact that they offered their money and time towards an event is fantastic! Going beyond covering the food costs, $500 on the bar and most of the prizes, our friendly vendors spent time out of their day to mingle with their future customers. The Board of Directors choose the end of the year so that it won’t hinder your decision as to whether or not you will sign your assistant up for the event. We can all blame the weather for why the numbers were low, but only a few backed out the week of the event due to the storm. So that leads us to believe that some of our Superintendent members did not even register their assistant. To think that you received the email and then simply deleted it or even worse, gave it some thought for a while and later decided not to send your assistant. Even if he or she doesn’t play golf, it’s continued on page 2 GCSANE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Assistant Appreciation - continued from page 1 PRESIDENT Jason S. I’d love to say that I participated in the Assistant Appreciation day when I was an assistant, but sadly I cannot. Not simply because my boss didn’t register me, or the weather permitted me not to go, or that I don’t play golf. I have an even better reason why, a running joke between the two of us now, but my former boss actually started and hosted the very first Assistant Appreciation day the very same year that I left as his assistant after 7 years. Not one to hold any grudges, I’ve sent my assistant to every one since 2007. So please, next October or November when you receive the notification about the Assistant Appreciation Day please sign yours up. Every assistant should attend, whether they’re a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, send em all! Trust me, GCSANE does not make any money from it, all of the proceeds go right back into the day whether its food, booze or prizes. If you are hesitant about not having your assistant on the property for the day, then host the damn thing, they’ll be there in case you have any questions or need a translation for the crew.  Richard T. Thanks to Host Superintendent Jeff Urquhart and his Assistant Kris Armando for the beautifully conditioned course and the hospitality shown to all the Assistants who came for some fun and a break from the daily routine. Many Friends and Affiliate Members of the Association stepped up and donated breakfast, lunch, closest to the hole, longest drive and other sponsorships to make this a wonderful day of appreciation for the hard work our Assistants do all year long. For me, it was nice to meet those who will become future leaders of our profession. Thanks to Mike Turner of Country Club Enterprises, Mark Casey of MTE, Scott Mackintosh of Atlantic Golf & Turf, Brian Giblin of Bayer, Robin Hayes of Hart’s Seeds, Andy Langlois of BISCO, Dennis Friel and John Callahan of the Cardinals, and Ron Tumiski and Chris Leonard of John Deere Landscapes for their generous support of this event. The last outdoor meeting of the year took place November 5, at Hopedale Country Club in Hopedale. Tom and his son Thanks to Tom Albert, Host Superin- tendent and Ken Mooradian long time Green Chairman at Hopedale for the terrific arrangements they made for golf and dinner. This was another day of fun, camaraderie, education, sunny weather and nine holes of golf on an excellent golf course. Dave Johnson recruited Dr. Thomas Mather to make a presentation on the tick populations on our courses, their life cycle and preventative measures to keep us healthy. Ken Mooradian Something I saw at both MiltonHoosic and Hopedale were Superintendents helping Superintendents. As we all know, staffing isn’t abundant in the fall so lending a hand when needed is much appreciated. At Milton-Hoosic, Kevin Corvino, then the Superintendent at Norfolk Golf Club and currently at the Dedham Country and Polo Club, and two of his staff members helped Jeff Urquhart prepare the course for the Assistants Meeting. In turn, Jeff sent his Assistant, Kris Armando to Hopedale to help with preparation for the meeting there. This is something to keep in mind if you’re hosting a meeting in the spring or fall. We’re all in this together so let’s help each other when needed.  By Don Hearn 4 A Tribute to Dave Comee Recently the Winchendon School Golf Course hosted a golf tournament in memory of Dave Comee, the long time Superintendent of the school’s golf course. This event is known as the Dave Comee Memorial Turkey Trot. As part of the day’s event the school unveiled a beautiful memorial garden complete with a gazebo, benches, stone pavers, and plants. The project was completed under the supervision of Corey Murphy the current superintendent and former assistant who worked with Dave for many years. Corey is also a member of our Association and is carrying on the good work at Winchendon. The Winchendon School and Dave’s friends have gone the extra mile to remember Dave and Kathy as well as the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England and its Scholarship and Benevolence Fund with their very generous and thoughtful donation. This will be an annual event and will raise funds to support the Dave Comee Scholarship. To all of them, a heartfelt “thank you” for your generosity.  By Don Hearn From left: John Kerney, Winchendon School Headmaster; Kathy Comee; Pam Blair, Academic Dean, Dean of Faculty and good friend of Dave Comee; Dave’s Pals Bob Healy and Mike Hermanson. In addition to Dave’s many friends, a lot of the credit for erecting the gazebo and memorializing Dave’s contributions goes to John Kerney, Headmaster of the Winchendon School. He drove the project and supported the recognition of Dave’s contributions in this very visible and lasting way. One of the many nice things about John is how he included Dave’s wife Kathy in the tribute. Along with the recognition of Dave and Kathy, the tournament raised over two thousand dollars for the GCSA of New England’s Scholarship and Benevolence Fund. What a wonderful way for the school and Dave’s friends to recognize his contributions. As many of you know, Dave was a long time and active member of the Scholarship and Benevolence Committee and one of the scholarships awarded each year is named in his honor. 5 GCSANE Affiliate Report Greetings and Happy Holiday Season! ticipation, at all levels in the organization, is cherished. According to Koppenhaver, September was the first time there was an increase in the facility utilization rate compared to weather. In all other months, he said, increases in monthly rounds played were attributable to an increase in golf playable hours, Koppenhaver’s measure of the total number of daylight hours suitable for playing golf compared with golf-threatening factors such as rain, wind and temperature extremes. The most significant year-to-date increases in rounds played (13.4 percent) were in Golf Datatech’s East North Central zone of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. According to Golf Datatech’s weather-monitoring system, Weather Trends International, the average temperature in that region has climbed 4.2 percent and precipitation has fallen by 31 percent in 2012 compared to the first nine months of 2011. Conversely, the smallest year-to-date gains were 3.5 in the Pacific region of California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington, followed by the South Atlantic zone of Delaware, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C., where average temperatures and precipitation were flat through the first nine months of 2012 compared with the same period the prior year. Climate change might be a sign of eventual doom for polar bears and people living in low-lying coastal areas, but for the time being it might be a good thing for people working in the golf business. In October, TurfNet reported that year-over-year rounds played were up 7.5 percent compared with the first nine months of 2011, according to data from Golf Datatech, a golf industry research firm. On Thursday, Nov. 15, Golf Datatech reported that such data could be close to record growth for that time period noting that “rounds played in 2012 have increased significantly and are trending towards record high levels for the year,” according to the Kissimmee, Fla.-based firm. “For the first nine months of 2012, golf rounds played throughout the U.S. are at an all-time high in terms of percentage increase, up 7.5 percent over 2011,” said president Tom Stine. “This is the largest jump in rounds played since we began tracking them in 1999.” Each month, Golf Datatech takes a sampling of rounds played at more than 3,000 daily fee and private facilities in 49 states (excluding Alaska) and produces a report of golfer participation in eight geographic regions. Stine credits favorable weather conditions nationwide with the increase in play, citing statistics from Weather Trends International. Jim Koppenhaver of Pellucid Corp., agreed. Registration Deadline: Friday December 7th 7 Changes with MSDS and the New GHS Regulations To help get the process started, here are 10 steps companies under the jurisdiction of the HCS should take now:

Step 1: Move Ahead on Compliance
The first thing companies should do is put someone in charge of addressing GHS. This person should become familiar with GHS with an eye towards how the changes will impact employee safety, training and operations.

Step 2: Look Out for GHS Formatted Safety Data Sheets Entering the Facility
Under GHS, safety data sheets are called SDSs. These SDSs, in addition to dropping the M from material safety data sheets (MSDSs), feature a harmonized 16-section format that follows a strict order. In addition, the GHS-formatted safety data sheets include new elements such as signal words, pictograms and hazard statements.

Employers should ensure their front line employees, such as those who work in shipping, procurement, the front office, or on the dock, are looking for SDSs and know what to do when they come across one. This is true for shipments of new chemicals as well as new shipments of current chemicals.

Step 3: Review Written Hazard Communication Plan
Hazard communication violations are one of the top three most frequently cited infractions by OSHA. Of those citations, problems with the required written plan are the most common issues. The written plan is one of the first things OSHA will ask for during an inspection, even if it is not the primary reason for their visit. Written plans must accurately reflect the hazards within the specific work environment. Reviewing the written plan now will also help companies identify areas where the GHS needs to be addressed.

Step 4: Update Written Chemical Inventory
An important part of the written plan is a written chemical inventory. OSHA stipulates that employers should know what chemicals they have in their facilities and that there is a corresponding safety data sheet for each. Having an up-to-date inventory is critical to managing the churn of new/revised safety data sheets that is expected as a result of GHS.

Step 5: Manage the MSDS/SDS Churn
With GHS adoption, every U.S. manufacturer and distributor will need to reclassify their chemicals and create updated SDSs and labels, which in turn will be sent to downstream users. Companies should expect their entire MSDS library to turn over in a short time frame with GHS adoption.

SDS churn is a way to describe the swapping out of old MSDSs for new GHSformatted safety data sheets. Electronic SDS management can greatly reduce the time, costs and stress associated with keeping a safety data sheet library up-to-date and compliant. If a company is still managing MSDSs using paper-based filing systems, now is the time to pursue an electronic system.

Step 6: Develop a Label Strategy
Under GHS, OSHA is moving away from the label approach that largely allowed companies to decide what to put on chemical labels. Now, GHS-formatted labels as required by OSHA include six standard elements: product identifier, manufacturer information, signal words (either Danger or Warning), hazard pictograms, and hazard statements and precautionary information. (Pictograms are black symbols on white backgrounds with red diamond borders.)

Companies that use workplace or secondary container labels will need to review the label requirements under the revised HCS to ensure compliance. However, OSHA has signaled it will allow some flexibility in creating workplace labels.

Step 7: Start Planning for Employee Training OSHA is giving companies two years to train employees on how to read revised labels and safety data sheets. Full compliance is required within three years. The training piece is accelerated because OSHA expects employees covered by the HCS will begin seeing updated safety data sheets and labels well before full compliance is due.

Best practices would suggest that employers should train employees on the revised HCS requirements as soon as reasonably possible. GHS will present a learning curve for everyone. Online training might be beneficial, especially as part of a blended learning environment.

Step 8: Talk to Vendors about GHS
Companies should start talking now to their supply chain about GHS. They should determine what their suppliers’ plans and timelines are to transition to GHS, and if necessary, understand what their customer’s needs are. The sooner vendors are compliant with GHS, the easier it will be on everyone.

 Step 9: Remember SARA Obligations
With GHS adoption, facilities with obligations under SARA Title III may need to provide new and updated SDS information to local and state emergency planning agencies.

Again, this is an area where an electronic management system makes sense. In addition to better chemical inventory management, good systems enable users to more effectively generate SARA reports and other regulatory reports.

Step 10: Get Moving on Authoring
Chemical manufacturers, distributors and importers have special responsibilities under GHS to reclassify hazards and produce updated safety data sheets and labels. Many companies have already started updating their documents, but others have been waiting for more certainty about when GHS is coming. With GHS passing OMB, it is a good time for those companies to get off the sidelines and begin the authoring process. Conclusion
OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard covers more than five million workplaces in the United States with hazardous chemicals on premise; GHS affects them all. It will take time for companies to make good decisions about transitioning to the revised HCS. Those good decisions will be a lot easier to come by the sooner they get started. ANNOUNCEMENTS A Thank You from Kathy Comee To all of the GCSANE members who attended the S&B tournament in memory of Dave Comee on August 6 th, Our condolences are extended to Joe and Trisha Lazaro on the passing of Trisha’s mother, Rose M. Umbrello, who passed away on November 8, 2012. I would like to thank all of you who participated in this year’s event and for the kindness shown to our family. Losing Dave so suddenly and at such a young age has been difficult, yet days like the day of the S&B tournament and the tributes given to Dave were heartwarming. I would also like to thank everyone for the incredible kindness shown to me while I spoke about my husband. Golf and the GCSANE has been a huge part of my life for many years and to walk away from that has been extremely difficult. So, I thank you for letting me share some of those memories with you. I’d also like to thank the committee for establishing the Dave Comee Scholarship. We were totally surprised and deeply honored to learn of it. We can’t think of a nicer way to honor Dave’s life than by helping a family with college expenses. I’d also like to thank Don Hearn for all the work he did behind the scenes as well as the S&B committee in making the event so touching. One final thank you is to Michael Stachowicz and the Dedham Country & Polo Club for hosting the tournament. The course and grounds were beautiful and I appreciated your hospitality. Our condolences are extended to Greg Misodoulakis and family on the passing of Greg’s father, George J. Misodoulakis, who passed away on November 19, 2012. Congratulations to Kevin Corvino on his new position as Superintendent at Dedham Country and Polo Club. Congratulations to Mike Stachowicz who has just become the National Park Service's first Turf Specialist. He'll be working in Washington, DC. Kevin Osgood, a past president of the GCSA of New England is now a member of the MGA's Executive Committee. Congratulations to John Zolkowski, former Assistant at Blue Hills, on his new position as the Superintendent at Norfolk Golf Club. With much appreciation, Kathy Comee and family As in the past, The Newsletter continues to invite Affiliate members to submit a press release about new personnel, new products or a company bio.
