It seems that most of our members have completed spring aerification and other early season projects. We are all preparing for the arrival of summer and hoping that the weather will be good for golf and growing turf. It has been some time since we have travelled to the western part of the state and I’m looking forward to visiting the Country Club of Pittsfield on May 13th. Jim Conant will be hosting us and he has helped build a strong reputation for the course, having been at the club for 16 years. It should be a great time of year for a road trip. I want to thank the many Friends members who have taken advantage of the Partner Promotion Program (PPP). I expect those who are participating will find value and convenience in this option. The credit for organizing and administering the program goes to Mark Casey, Jeff Urquhart and Don Hearn. We have seen a successful start to the first year of this program. Much of the work that goes on at the Board of Directors level is attending to the many “behind the scenes” aspects our running our association. Prior to serving on the Board I had no idea just how much time goes into this effort. The Scholarship and Benevolence committee to manage its fund and golf tournament is a good example. In order to preserve the years of work that has gone into establishing the S&B fund and to ensure that it remains viable for the future, we are working to establish a legal trust for the fund. Our Treasurer, Michael Luccini is collaborating with Dave Stowe and the S&B committee as well as legal counsel to ensure the trust is developed and positioned in a manner consistent with the spirit in which it was established. Best of luck to everyone for a successful year and I hope to see you at one of the many events and meetings in the near future.  AFFILIATE TRUSTEE Mark Casey 890 East Street, Tewksbury, MA 01876 617-990-2427 Fax: 978-409-0445 Email: mcasey@mte.us.com MTE - Turf Equipment Solutions Mark Gagne FINANCE CHAIRMAN Donald D’Errico 25 Tiot Street, Sharon, MA 02067 508-530-2113 Email: donny@springvalleycountryclub.com Spring Valley Country Club GOLF CHAIRMAN Jason VanBuskirk 58 Randall Road, Stow, MA 01775 978-568-1100 ext. 121 Email: jvanbuskirk@stowacres.com Stow Acres Country Club EDUCATION CHAIRMAN Patrick VanVleck 103 Cochituate Road, Wayland, MA 01778 508-358-1104 Fax: 508-358-2359 Email: patrickvanvleck@sandyburr.com Sandy Burr Country Club NEWSLETTER CHAIRMAN Peter J. While we think of the individuals and families affected, the passing of time also allows for the region to reflect upon much of the good will, sacrifice, and selflessness on display as members of the community help each other during these difficult times. These heroic actions have been an inspiration to many of us, helping put our daily lives in perspective, a reminder of the importance of giving back and helping each other. With the golf season upon us, it can be easy as Turfgrass Managers to feel like there is no time in our busy schedules to perform charitable acts such as community service, participating in fundraising, or other similar contributions. For those of you that feel like there is not enough time in the day, I introduce to you Jim Conant, CGCS of The Country Club of Pittsfield. Jim is the Host Superintendent for GCSANE’s May 13 meeting at CC of Pittsfield. Jim’s track record during his 21 years as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent speaks for itself, but it is how Jim spends his time away from the course that is truly remarkable. Whether it is playing a role in the local community or assisting educational establishments, Jim sets an example to all of us that we are all capable carving out some time to make a difference. In the town of Pittsfield, Jim is a member of the School Committee, elected in 2011. Jim, along with the six other committee members are currently working on building a new high school. Jim is also the Chairman of the Pittsfield Conservation Commission, where he has been a board member for 10 years. The civic duty Jim has been involved in does not end there. He has previously served on the board of Park Commissioners for Pittsfield, as well as serving as Past President of the Pittsfield Babe Ruth youth baseball league. Finally, Jim is a member of the corporate board of the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club. Typically, the aforementioned list of volunteerism and civic service would be enough to fill two lifetimes, but we haven’t even gotten to Jim’s involvement in the Turfgrass Industry. Having graduated from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, Jim has gone above and beyond when it comes to giving back to those who have helped him along the way. He was the chairman of the campaign to raise funds to build the Dr. Joseph Troll Turf Research Center and is currently a member of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture Advisory Board. Jim is very excited and proud of the new undergraduate turf program at Stockbridge School of Agriculture, which he calls “the fruit of labor of a long journey.” On top of all these accomplishments, Jim is also a Past President of the GCSA of Cape Cod and served on the board of GCSANE as Finance Chairman for many years. Jim was a founding member of the NERTF board and is a past President of the foundation. Jim’s professional career started as an Assistant Superintendent at Fairview CC in CT and Scarsdale CC in NY. From there, he became Superintendent at Kings Way golf Club in Yarmouthport before landing at his current position of Superintendent of CC of Pittsfield. Jim Conant, CGCS When one thinks of the hotbeds of New England Golf Courses, most will turn their attention to the rustic courses on Cape Cod or the historic, colonial courses along the Route 128 corridor. However, Western Massachusetts is the home of some of New England’s greatest gems, with CC of Pittsfield amongst the best. May’s GCSANE meeting presents the opportunity for association members to broaden geographical horizons and play a golf course which Jim describes as “a classic, timeless beauty.” CC Pittsfield is a private club that was established in 1897. The original design was by Donald Ross and the course was remodeled in 1934 by Wayne Stiles and is today considered a Stiles course. The summer season is short in the Berkshires but the course does get inundated with play during July and August. This past year, Jim and his crew constructed new tees for a short course, which is popular with the club’s long time members. Jim and his crew approach each day with the simple goal of “being the best they can be.” Jim is a true representative of what the GCSANE stands for, both in his on-course work, and in his social benevolence. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed keeping grass green and adhering to the wants and needs of golfers. However, we can all learn from Jim Conant and what he has accomplished “outside the ropes” with a little reflection and selflessness. So, on May 13, take time to be a part of your Association by attending the GCSANE meeting, and while you’re there, thank Jim for everything he has done for both our industry and community!  Visit us at ww.GCSANE.org 3 Affiliate Committee Update Thank you for the many companies responding and renewals of Friends and Affiliates for 2013. Because of the Partnership Promotion Program there may have been confusion about when dues for Affiliates and Friends were due so invoices were sent to those who hadn’t enrolled in the Partnership Promotion Program. So, if you’re still interested please contact me. future might be, how to recruit young golfers to the game and how to manage or try to manage golfer expectations. It’s important for the success of the Association that dues are paid on time. And it’s important for Members to pay dues on time to be included in the annual Membership Directory. The directory will be published as close to June 1st as is practical and if your dues are outstanding June 1st you’ll be considered delinquent, your membership will end and you’ll not be included in the directory. If you’re having a problem paying your dues please give me or any member of the Board of Directors a call and let us know your circumstances. Left to right: Dick Stuntz, Brad Demo, Ron Whitten, Kim Richey, Richard Konzem, Steve Randall Last month I had the pleasure of traveling to GCSAA Headquarters in Lawrence, KS to attend the Chapter Leaders/ Executive Symposium with Dave Johnson, our Association’s Secretary. It was a two-day, jam-packed-with-information experience where Dave and I learned a lot. Dave has detailed his experience and thoughts elsewhere in this month’s NEWSLETTER. One of the benefits of this symposium was learning about different ideas tried by other Associations and how much we can learn from each other. Glen Misiaszek ran the Boston Marathon to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis research. Neither he nor the rest of the world knew the outcome of what was to be one of the worst days in Boston’s history. Glen’s wife and his two boys were supposed to be cheering him on at the finish line but they decided not come to the race. Thanks, Glen for raising funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. And it’s good to know you’re safe.  By Don Hearn On the left: Kevin Doyle, GCSAA Northeast Regional Representative, and Dave Johnson GCSA of New England Secretary are standing beside the sculpture of Old Tom Morris outside GCSAA Headquarters. This bronze sculpture is the creation of a golf course superintendent! Brad Pearson from Nebraska. A special experience was listening to a panel discussion moderated by Steve Randall, GCSAA’s Associate Director of Chapter Outreach. The panel included Ron Whitten, Senior Editor for Architecture for Golf Digest Magazine; Dick Stuntz, former superintendent and general manager at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, KS, current owner of two courses and a Director of the National Golf Course Owners Association; Brad Demo, Executive Director of the Midwest Section PGA and long time golf professional at Alvamar Golf Club; Kim Richey, Executive Director of the Kansas Golf Association; and Richard Konzem, GCSAA’s Chief Operating Officer. Each gave their views on the state of the game, what the 5 The Etiquette of Wearing a Hat Spring is here, and the golf season has begun. It’s the time of year many people wear all sorts of hats, until winter hats are again needed. I know to some I’ll sound like a geezer, a curmudgeon, a dinosaur, out of touch and probably other disparaging comments, but I’ll run the risk to make my feelings known. Actually, this topic has been on my mind for a while, so here it is! You may wear a hat indoors in public buildings, such as airports, public lobbies, and crowded public elevators. However, historically a gentleman will always remove his hat when a lady enters or is in the same elevator. This isn’t seen much anymore. During a Pledge or National Anthem: How about the knuckleheads who don’t take off their hats and caps during the playing of a national anthem. Regardless of which country’s anthem is played, hats should come off, period. Indoors: How can I say this nicely without yelling in all capital letters: No man or woman, young or old, should ever, ever, ever, ever wear a sports hat — especially a baseball type cap—indoors! Not in restaurants, in someone’s home, at the dining table, in the clubhouse, at church, in an office building, in a classroom, in a museum, or at a movie or performance theatre. There are more, but you get the point. There’s absolutely no purpose to keeping your hat on… not even when you are having a bad hair day or need to cover up a bald spot, or think you’re making a fashion statement. There’s nothing cool about wearing your baseball type cap backwards, especially indoors. How to Take off a Hat: When taking off your hat, hold it so only the outside of the hat shows, not the inside and lining. Hold it in your right hand across your chest and heart, or place it on your seat while standing tall and respectfully. Where not to place your hat: Don’t place your hat on the dining table, a meeting table or any other area where others are gathered.  By Don Hearn 2013 Membership Directory Member information updates and dues are coming in just fine, although some of you have sent in your payments without your updated information form. Please take a minute to fill those out and return them to Don. The process of updating your information in the directory has already begun for those who have sent theirs in. Are you happy with its size? If you have any ideas for it’s layout or appearance please let me know (jmartin101@gmail.com). All ideas will be reviewed and also considered.  Jeff Urquhart 6 GCSANE Member Okay Amid Boston Tragedy April 15, 2013 in a ballroom. The bomb squad came by. A girl was hysterical. We just hunkered down." It is unknown whether other GCSAA members participated in the marathon. GCSAA President Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Boston. We share our best for a speedy recovery for those who were injured and our condolences to those families who had loved ones pass away." Misiaszek said his wife and two boys were supposed to come cheer him on at the finish line, but they did not end up coming to the race. This was Misiaszek's 14th marathon. His time of 3 hours, 24 minutes, was 7 minutes slower than his best ever. His time, though, really wasn't important following this effort. "After what happened today, my time is kind of meaningless," said Misiaszek, who plans to be back at work tomorrow. "I never thought in a million years something like this would happen."  A GCSAA/GCSANE member who ran today in the Boston Marathon is home safe. Glen Misiaszek, CGCS, from Cohasset Golf Club in Cohasset, Mass., told GCM this evening that he had completed his race before bombs exploded nearby, killing at least three and injuring more than 140, multiple media outlets are reporting tonight. "They are saying an 8-year-old was killed. Lives were lost. To me, a marathon is supposed to be a positive event," Misiaszek, a 21-year member of the association, said by phone from his home. "I help raise money for MS (Multiple Sclerosis) when I run, trying to do something good for them. It's kind of tarnished at this point because of what happened today." When he crossed the finish line, Misiaszek headed to the Park Plaza Hotel, about one block from where he completed his race, to take a shower. That is when the bombs went off. "It was chaos from that point," he said. "I stayed at the hotel, Source: GCSAA Press Release 7 Kevin Doyle - GCSAA Updates stewardship of golf course superintendents, and offer the services of our members in the region to craft golf specific inclusion in the document. This information and offer was very well received by Michael Jennings, Director of Water Resource Protection and Clair Ryan, Environmental Analyst, NEIWPCC representatives on the call. The outreach effort was referenced early in the first stakeholders meeting. Golf, and the regional Associations, were lauded for volunteering valuable information, and the offer to help craft input into the guideline document will be utilized in due time. In addition, a statement was penned by GCSAA and submitted to NEIWPCC putting on paper much of the same information communicated on the conference call. Your Chapter Board of Directors received a copy of this statement. If you would like a copy as well, please contact me directly and I will be sure to get one to you. Many engaged members were in attendance at both meetings, and the efforts of GCSAA have been continually communicated to the Board of Directors of the 14 Associations impacted within the region. Both the March 12th meeting in Providence, RI and the March 26th meeting in Portsmouth, NH focused on turf specific areas within the first draft document. The document itself was designed by water focused individuals, therefore there was a lot of conjecture regarding the tenor to which turf was portrayed, agronomic specific points, and currently functioning programs that were addressed during the open forum portion of the meetings. NEIWPCC stated clearly that the document is being developed with the do-it-yourself home lawn applicator in mind, and spent a significant portion of the meetings garnering feedback on the best way to reach that segment of the market. As consumers of turf fertilizer, it is understandable to have golf included in an Initiative such as this. NEIWPCC has a clear understanding of the regulatory pressures that performance turf is under within the states we operate. Whether, or to what degree, golf will be included in the Turf Fertilizer Initiative still remains to be seen, however, there is a real good chance we will have a seat at the table when the time comes to address the issue. Right now, that is the important part.  NEIWPCC: With an Acronym Like That….It Must be Government Related Who are they? The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) is a federally established Commission tasked to aid in developing regulations and programs to protect water quality in the 6 New England states, and New York. The Commission has been in existence for over 40 years, and actually predates the Clean Water Act. The head of the Environmental and Health Departments of each state are automatically on the Commission, in addition, each Governor appoints three additional members to represent their state. More information on NEIWPCC can be found at: http://www.neiwpcc.org/. Why are they important to me? The NEIWPCC staff was tasked by the Commission to develop a set of guidelines specifically targeting turf fertilizers. The initiative is designed to develop guidelines for turf fertilizer users (specifically do-it-yourself homeowners) to reference and follow. These guidelines would be sufficient to protect water quality and adequately maintain healthy turf. Information gathering meetings began in May of 2012. Manufacturer and University input were taken and that information was crafted into a first draft. What is being done? Two stakeholder meetings were held in March of this year by NEIWPCC to garner feedback on the first draft of their “Northeast Voluntary Turf Fertilizer Initiative”. A copy of the draft document was received ahead of the first stakeholder meeting and distributed to Chava McKeel, Director of Government Relations and Greg Lyman, Director of Environmental Program. A conference call with representatives of NEIWPCC and GCSAA was scheduled and completed before the first stakeholders meeting took place. During that time, GCSAA took the opportunity to explain the unique needs of golf’s performance turf, promote the environmental Kevin Doyle GCSAA-Field Staff, Northeast Region kdoyle@gcsaa.org 816-807-3103 8 9 GCSAA Leadership Symposium Experience By Dave W. Johnson, GCSANE Secretary It was my first trip to GCSAA, and I was more than impressed with every aspect of the trip. Our staff at the national level operates like a well-oiled machine. I was able to meet many of the on-site staff that works very hard to promote our profession and support our member’s needs. In addition, the entire field staff was deeply involved with the event, and our Northeast Field Rep, Kevin Doyle, did a tremendous job participating as well as communicating all that goes on at the national level. I have been a member of GCSAA for 15 years, and I can now truly say that I am extremely proud to be a member of an association that works so hard to promote our profession and support its members. I became aware that as Superintendents, we have become the most important people at golf facilities. Not only because of the work that we do, but because of the behind the scenes work GCSAA does for us. Looking forward, it is paramount that we work together with our allied associations to grow the game of golf. It will be a long road ahead, but I feel that we are moving into the next chapter of the game of golf. If we as an industry, give back to the game, that has given so much to us, we can make golf a healthy, viable game and industry for the generations that will follow in our footsteps. Time is very valuable to all of us, so make the time to volunteer. The profession that has given so much to you needs you to give back. The more you give, the more you will get back in the end. I would like thank the GCSANE Board of Directors, the members of GCSANE, as well as GCSAA and the entire staff for this opportunity.  Have you ever thought about joining an association? Have you ever thought about volunteering on a committee or on the board of the association to which you belong? Do you have an opinion about what is going on within your association? Do you want to better yourself as a person? Do you want to advance in your career? Do you want to build a larger network? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I recommend that you volunteer to get involved. I was approached 4 years ago to serve on the GCSANE Board as education chairman. Although I had been a member of GCSANE for five years, I had not participated in meetings leading up to this point. I knew this would be a good opportunity to better myself and my career. It was one of the best career decisions I have made to date. Sitting on the board, I have been very fortunate to learn from some exceptional people. I have gained knowledge about our industry, how to communicate better, how to be an effective leader, how to run successful meetings and all of these things have made me a better professional. I was fortunate to have recently attended the GCSAA Chapter Leaders/Executives symposium with our Manager, Don Hearn, CGCS at GCSAA headquarters in Lawrence, Kansas. Don and I met with 46 other leaders/executives from chapters from all over the country. Some of the things we discussed and learned were: Ideas on how to grow the game of golf, how to promote our profession, better means of servicing and communicating with members, and lastly how to build and provide value for the members of GCSANE. UMASS IDENTIFICATION OF TURF DAMAGING INSECTS WORKSHOPS Time: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (attendee check-in will begin at 7:45, and the program will start promptly at 8:00) Accurate identification of turf damaging pests is the first step toward effective, integrated management.
