NJGCSA MARCH HIGH LIGHTS Turf Clippings Yes, another season is fast approaching even though I am sure many of us wondering as we look at the white ground cover. The March meeting was en joyed by many of our members and some new superintendents in the State. Arnold Trible, our host was hoping for a few of the boys to play a little paddle tennis but again the white flakes appeared to upset this part of the program. We had a brief business meeting followed by an excellent dinner and the evening was high lighted by a very informative and interesting talk by Golf Course Architect Geoffrey Cornish. He spoke briefly on some of the characteristics of Penn Cross and observations of its growth patterns and some of the various types of maintenance that he had found to be most success ful in keeping it as an excellent putting green surface. As he stated some of the best greens he has seen have been Penn Cross but also some of the worst. So maintenance pays a large part in its behavior. Literature was hand ed out on this topic and then Mr. Cornish moved into a colored slide presen tation of Golf Course Construction and renovation today and some of the trends that have developed through the years. Yes, for the 64 who attended I am sure they had some things to think about when they went home. This is what we hope we can develop in the coming year in our educational program. We feel that the coming Tour of The Johns Manville Plant should also be of ben efit to any member who attends. It certainly makes us more familiar with one product that many of us are involved in as we improve or change our exist ing irrigation systems. An open invitation to the Eastern Grass Court Tennis Championships on July 31 was extended to NJGCSA members by Mr. Hobart, Tournament Chairman of Orange Lawn Tennis Club. Mr. Hobart believes that from all reports from tennis players and his own opinion, Arnold has some of the best maintained d playable courts in the U.S.A. A brief meeting was held at the Orange Lawn and Tennis primarily to Business Meeting of NJGCSA March 16, 1967 familiarize our members of what the various committees have in store for us in 67. Program: Al Caravella reviewed the full slate of meetings that we have scheduled for this year. Yes, we will be at several new locations some of which will combine a little education also along with our golf outings. Golf: Dick Browne and Jack Martin have promised us a little variety in our golf outings. Publicity: Jim Gilligan has been getting good coverage in local papers on our activities. Any photos that you might feel to be of interest please contact Jim. National: The conference was discussed briefly. Many felt that the National should try to investigate prices if possible since DC was quite high. The possibility of group or charter flight to San Francisco was mentioned. The National also tried a pilot public relations program at DC. National TV coverage was included. Our own Ed Casey was interviewed on the local DC TV station in regard to the coming US open. MEMBERSHIP: Dick Williams noted that several guests were at the March meeting. In regard to membership applications for the coming year the policy adopted by the board is as follows: An applicant must make personnal contact with the membership committee Chairman, or Board member. After meeting either of the a- ve then an application will be issued. The board feels we should be famil- lar with an applicant before an application is issued and action is taken on his application for approval. We therefore would like all regular members who know of any one who desires or is a prospective new member to please bring them to our next meeting at Maplewood. Applications will not be issued on a written request basis. The Mem.Comm. will issue applications as contacts are made. Yours for Better Turf, Gary Crothers & Don S Marshall
