TURF CLIPPINGS NJGCSA Happenings: We all anxiously awaited the meeting at Hominy Hills. Few of us had played it and many had never even seen it. But like many days this summer, we had a few hours of pouring rain. It did stop later and a few holes were played but in general everyone is still hoping to play Hominy in the coming years. Harvey Dreibelbus, our host, gave a cooks tour in the afternoon which everyone enjoyed. The delicious dinner was followed by a very interesting and inform ative talk by Dr. Streu, Entomologist from Rutgers, regarding the Clover Weevil or better known as Hyperodes. Some excellent slides were shown of the various stages in the life cycle of the insect. As of yet, the insect has not been located in New Jersey. Dr. Streu also emphasized the fact that if any one does feel that the insect is present on their turf to PLEASE bring a specimen to be identified before becoming alarmed. NJGSA Field Day: Well, thanks to some hard work by Committee Chairman, Jim McNally, who was ably assisted by Don Marshall, Red Williams, Skip Cameron, Ed Nickelsen, and any other I might have missed, it was a great Field Day and was held under ideal weather conditions. The attendance was very good and the commercial houses I am sure had a nice response to their displays and demonstrations. The demonstrations that were held in the afternoon went off very smoothly. There are rocks in McNally’s nursery so some small difficulties developed with the trenching machines. The door prizes were won by Tony Rippel (radio), and Ken Rutherford (portable TV). We had 150 register for the door prizes. Many did not register so we estimate that we had almost 200 people in attendance. Yes, the beer flowed and everybody caught up on the latest happenings and developments in Turf Maintenance. For those who did not make it or were unable to, plan to come next year because each year it gets better and this one certainly was our best by far. NJGCSA Business Meeting at Hominy Hills: NJGCSA has voted to contribute $25.00 to Joseph Valentine Research Center. Crests for jackets are available for members who desire to buy their own jacket. Nominations for Candidates for National Office were presented. Al Caravella and Garry Crothers names were sent to the National Nominating Committee. Garry Crothers has since with drawn. The up and coming NJGCSA Golf Invitational was discussed. Further information will be forth-coming from Jack Martin. Yours for better turf, Garry Crothers, Don Marshall
