TURF TOPICS WINTER REPORT Now that the conference season is over everybody is anxious to get back to work. Charlie McCrea must have enjoyed himself the most at the banquet table as he checked in at a robust 249 lbs. His friends were saying that he is a common-sewer of food rather than a conisseur. Garry Crothers reported back from three weeks of skiing in Europe looking fit as a fiddle. Seems as though he enjoys not only the best of two seasons, but also the best of two worlds. Pete Pedrazzi got an extended Kitchen pass from his wife for a ten day swing through the South on a golf trip. Pete will have to give us married superintendents some lessons on wife management. Our President Bob Kapherr was also in the ranks of the tourist in Florida this season. Probably was sharpening up for his matches with his neighbor Al Foster. Ed Casey of Baltusrol was also down in Florida taking his chances on the weather and other tourists. So all in all it was probably a pretty good winter for the superintendents lucky enough to escape the snow. IDEA DEPARTMENT Joe Spang down at Rutgers has an idea for roping off tees that may work out well. He took a 3 lb ice cream container and filled it with green concrete after he had inserted a short length of 3/4 inch pipe in the middle. He flushed the concrete with the pipe and then buried the end product around the entrance to some of his tees. When he puts the stakes in for the rope fence all he has to do is put a 3/8 inch pipe inside the 3/4 inch pipe thats in the ground. The big advantage is that he doesn't have to pound stakes when he wants to use the fence and he can have controlled excess to the tee by just varying the opening. Also when it is time to mow, he won't have grass growing around the stakes because of the concrete and if he wants to he can take down the fence quickly for mowing. CAN YOU EVER WIN Charlie McCrea was checking with Pete Pedrazzi on his technique for building coils for his drinking fountains so that he could ice them down. Pete said that they worked fine in fact he got some complaints because the water was too cold. You have to have big shoulders in this profession to bear up to the complaints because sometimes you can never win.
