Turf Clippings NJGCSA Happenings: Johns Hansville Tour: Bill Geoghan had the red carpet out for us at the recent tour of the Manville Plant. Although attendance was low, those who did make it enjoyed it. The amin tour in the morning covered the making of transit pipe from the basic raw materials to the finished product and also various testing that is done on the assembly line and in the labs. We were guests of Johns Manville for lunch and then saw many of the other types of products that were being developed in the research labs plus some actual testing of PVC plastic pipe and a small scale plastic pipe extruder in actual production of PVC. We all went in small groups of 2-3 with a guide so that everyone had ample opportunity to ask any questions about various steps in the production or testing. For those unable to make it you should try to take a day to visit the plant at Manville. wood CC with our host Dick Browne. It was a beautiful day, the first in over a week and I am sure this is what kept many of the members home try足 ing to get ready for opening day. We had 18 teams for the Scotch Four足 some event. Al Foster and Vic Gerard took honors with a 65. Larry Munther had closest to the pin on 18 while our host Dick Browne hit the ball a country mile on 17 for the longest drive of the day. After a few cocktails we all enjoyed dinner and then heard our guest speaker, John Meszaros of Hershey Rose Gardens and Golf Course, give an interesting presentation on a new means of poa and thatch control through the use of burning propane gas. The talk was in conjunction with numerous slides of the project that was undertaking just last fall at Hershey. We are all anxious to see how the results appear this fall after going through a full growing season. It certainly was something new in poa control.
