"The Pontiac Silverdome indoor turfgrass project has focused worldwide attention on MSU's turfgrass program," said Dr. Paul Reike, professor of crop and soil sciences. MSU researchers have developed natural grass that is being used in the Silverdome to provide a playing field for the World Cup Soccer Tournament games to be held there next year. Potential uses of this technology extend from the floor of the Silverdome to the golf courses and back yards of America. It may be a solution to problems where heavy shade makes it difficult to grow grass. Along with MSU's tradition of training turf managers, it's part of a successful two-year program in Lawn Care and Athletic Turf Management within the Institute of Agricultural Technology. David Gilstrap, the new coordinator of the program, explained that it is based on a team teaching and research approach that includes all eight full-time turf faculty. "The moveable turf concept we are using at the Silverdome will have future ap plications at many other multi-purpose arenas, both open and enclosed," said Gilstrap.
