Michawye Hills is an 18 hole championship course designed by Bills/ Childs Associates from Pontiac and was constructed by Frith-Sauger Company. The oourse was started in the spring of 1972 and completed in the fall of 1973. Greens and tees were seeded with Pencross Bent grass and fairways with a mixture of bent grasses. The complete course is watered with a Toro electric irrigation system. Although the official opening was May 1974 and in July was the site of the Michigan Publinx M tch Play Championship, last October when our Association had a meeting here, our group was the first to actually play the course. It was opened for this one day and Mr. Pox from Mio, to celebrate started the course off right with a "Hoie-In-One’. Michawye Hills is a part of a complete recreational community developed by Thompson Brown Company from Farmington. The entire development consists of 2980 acres and has ski slopes, cross country ski trails, tennis courts, year round pool and saunas plus complete dining and bar facilities. Mr. Carl Lundquist is the General Manager and Director of Golf coming from Plum Hollow Golf Club while Bill Wallace is the Golf Professional after 13 years at Hidden Valley Club in Gaylord. Mr. Fred Miller is the Superintend* ent of this fine layout and he invites you to play this interesting layout. Those of you wishing to play golf, remember our golf tournament, shake out a buck for Chairman Chuck Johnson, however please pace yourself so that there will be time for "Happy Hour* and say hello to your friends before dinner is served. Dinner will be as usual, 6:45 p. M. with our meeting to follow immediately. Our Constltution-By Laws states that the annual meeting will be held in September at which time the election of Board members will take place. It also states that a nominating committee must be appointed to pick candidates for the office of of Director to serve for three years. Three new Directors are elected every year and so our nominating Committee composed of John McDonald, Mike Thomas and Leon Powell have offered the following persons for nomination: Orman Bishop, Cadillac Country Club Nile Bunting, Garland Golf Club Joesph Burda, Leland Country Club Prank Heminger, Interlochen Golf & Country Club Frederick Powell, Perris State College Don Stough, Ye 01de Country Club Pa«e 2 directors whose terms are expiring are Prank Heminger, Joseph Burda and Frederick Powell. These men deserve much credit as they have contributed greatly to our organization. Nominations from the floor can be made at our annual meeting however we will have ballots made up with the before named candidates to hasten the secret balloting and to help the tellers that will count the votes. There is nothing in the Constitution-By-Laws that prevents Directors from being reelected. Newly elected Directors will meet with remaining Directors on the Board to elect the new officers at the first October meeting. Our fiscal year ends October 31st. At the conclusion of our business meeting, our Educational Committee under the Chairmanship of Mike Thomas, has for us an outstanding agronomist from United States Steel Co., Dr. Hay Llpps. We have been trying to get Dr. Llpps for over a year however due to his busy schedule our dates would always conflict. We are trying to set up dates for 1975 and would appreciate invitations at this next meeting so that our schedule can be completed and this information passed on to you. To date we have only Leland Country Club, under Joe Burda, as definite and that will probably be in June. We would like some new locations if possible however it is always nice to return to the lovely places where we have had previous meetings. MSU Field Day is September 10th at Traverse City Golf & Country Club Experimental Plots. Please be sure to wear your Northern Michigan Turf Manager Association emblem or your cap with the emblem on it. We will have a booth or table and will need help to man the booth plus assist in parking cars and help with other chores shortly before registration. Please come a little ahead of registration time. Your cooperation will be most appreciated. October 1st will be the next meeting after Michawye Hills and will be at Frankfort, Michigan. Details will be forthcoming in a letter however you can golf at either Crystal Downs Country Club or Frankfort Golf Club. Our last meeting in October will be the big social affair where all the gals are invited. It would be nice if our Social Committee could finalize plans in time to give details in our next letter. Anyone having any good ideas which they think the Committee could use, please oontaot Fred Powell, Frank Heminger, Larry Holbert, Terry Newton or Ralph Sill as this is the Committee. Monday, September 23rd, 1974 is the date of the 9th Annual Turfgrass Research Benefit at Bay Pointe Golf Club, 4000 Haggerty Road, Walled Lake, Michigan. This is sponsored by Michigan and Border Cities Golf Course Superintendents Association and the proceeds go to The Michigan Turfgrass Foundation.
