NORTHERN MICHIGAN TURF MANAGERS ASSOCIATION C. E. “TUCK” TATE, PRESIDENT FRANK HEMINGER, Seci ED KARCHESKI, VICE PRESIDENT CHiO 1147 SANTO TRAVERSE CITY, Ml. 49684 PHONE: 616-947-9274 GOLF———, an ineffectual en&aavoirto put an lnslgnifioant pellet into an obscure hole with entirely Inadequate weapons. Your next opportunity to prove or disprove this theory will be on Tuesday, August 20th, 1974 at The Garland Golf Course, Lewiston, when this Association will hold their next meeting. Garland Golf Course is owned by Garland Manufacturing Co. and was built about 26 years ago by Mr. Herman Otto, President and owner of Garland with Mr. Ossie Pynnonen, as superintendent. This was a private golf course at that time and had only nine holes. Assisting in the building of the original nine and still there is "Bud* Cahoon, one of our memebrs. In 1972, the back nine holes were started under the direction of the present Superintendent, Nile "Snuffy" Bunting and opened June 1st, 1973. The back nine plays from 3200 yards to 3800 yards depending which tees are used. There is an automatic watering system on the baokslde and manual system on the front side. Water for the course comes from ponds that are lake fed and it is suggested that since much water enters into play, you may need an extra golf ball or two. You are invited to play this fine manicured golf course by "Snuffy" Bunting and the Professional Alex Bedman. For directions in getting there, it is suggested that those coming from the north, south or west take 1-75 to Gaylord. Then east on M-32 to Lewiston where you will intersect M-491, then south on 491 A 489 about four miles to the golf course. Anyone coming on M-33 from the east, north from Luzerne toward Lewiston and the golf course is on the right. Lunch is available at the olub house and as usual dinner will be served promptly at 6:45 P. M. Anyone coming specifically for the meeting, please arrange your arrival to coincide. Our business meeting will start as soon as dinner is finished. For our speaker, we are very happy to report that Dr. James B. Beard, Michigan State University, will be with us. As you know, Dr. Bealls also the author of a wonderful reference book "Turfgrass- Science and Culture" which should be in your library. If you do not have a copy, applications for one are available. As usual, we must notify Garland of the number that will be there for dinner however you must complete the enclosed, self addressed, stamped post card and give us this information. We hate to report that many are very lax in sending back these cards and this proves embarrasing to our host Superintendent so PLEASE NOW, get your oard in the mall stating what your intentions are concerning dinner. We will again at this meeting have caps with our N.M.T.M.A. emblem on front for sale at cost. September 10th is Field Day at Traverse City Golf A Country Club experimental plots and we should all wear emblems that day identifying us and our organization. For the booth and in helping with parking plus setting up, remember we would appreciate some of our members getting there early to give assistance where needed.
