M STARTING TIME 9:30 A. M LUNCH 12:00 NOON AFTERNOON SESSION 1:00 P. M Entire proceedings will be inside therefore weather will have no effect on the proceedings. Speakers will be Bruce Branham, Paul Rieke, John N. (Trey) Rogers, Robert Schutzki, David Smitley, all from M.S.U., Austin Miller of Miller Engineers, Inc. Royal Oak, Kurt Thuemmel, President of Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, Tom Brogger, President of N.M.T.M.A. and Brent Nelson, Superintendent of Shanty Creek. Andy Norman, County Agent of Benzie County will be the Moderator. They have put together a very interesting programon turfgrass, horticulture, irrigation, diseases and pesticides subject fitting for a spring seminar. Cost pf part icipation for you will be $15.00 per person, including lunch. A postcard is enclosed which we would like you to return at once, so that we may inform "Tree Tops" of the number that will be there for lunch. A complete program of the seminar and the subjects which will be covered is inside. The superintendent at "Tree Tops" is our Board member and Treasurer, Damiam Kurkowski. NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be at Crystal Downs Country Club in May. The exact date has not been set as yet however another letter will be forthcoming with all the details. Mike Morris is the golf course superintendent and he has recently been appointed to our Board. Jim Olli, who was superintendent at Hidden Valley is moving to Marguette Country Club, as super. He felt that since it was so far away, it would be best that he resign. We hope that he will like the colder weather up there on the shores of Lake Superior. CrystalDowns Country Club will be the site of the 1991 USGA Amateur Seniors Golf Tournament. This is a very important major golf tour nament and will give more exposure to those that rate golf courses. Last year one of the major publications rated Crystal Downs as the 59th finest course in the world. Ben Crenshaw said after playing it, that if those who rate golf courses would have seen this course, its rating would be much lower. So--- keep your calendar clear until we are able to come up with the exact date. The difference between failure and success is doing a thing nearly right and doing a thing exactly right. Damian Kurkowski Treasurer Probably every member of the NMTMA hears this question at least once each year. The answers are many; Jonathon Scott, CGCS including such classics as: Immediate Past President "I groom ski slopes" "I babysit my daughter" Directors "I get equipment ready" James Bogart "I. referee basketball" Brian Holmes "I play basketball" Jeffrey Holmes "I sleep a lot" Charles Menefee, CGCS u j g q £ i 5 h i n q s 2. o "t?n Wm. Brent Nelson James Olli, CGCS "I go bowling” Kimberly Olson "I attend conferences" Robert Stelnhurst, CGCS That last answer says a lot about our profession. As professional turf managers we each need to keep Past Presidents Ed Karcheski up with the latest ideas relating to our industry. So C. E. “Tuck” Tate, CGCS far in 1599 we've had the opportunity to attend the David Longfield, CGCS Michigan Turfgrass Conference in Lansing and the GCSAA Conference and Show in Anaheim, Many NMTMA members took advantage of these educational programs. Executive Secretary Thomas Reed 3733 Apollo Dr. Most recently our association joined forces with Traverse City, Ml 49684 the Golf Association of Michigan to sponsor a greens Phone 616-943-8343 seminar at Garland GC. GAM Director, Jeff Rivard, opened the program with an introduction to the GAM. He also discussed procedures for dealing with bad weather during tournaments. Dr. Joe Vargas gave an update on black layer and summer patch. Conference attendees were also updated on current marketing programs for golf courses in Northern Michigan. Chris Fochtman, Green Ridge CC superintendent, shared his experiences as a caddy in the US Open. His presentation was followed by the highlight film from the 1989 US Open. USGA Green Section Regional Director, Jim Latham, gave a review of turf conditions in the midwest last summer. The program concluded with talks on golf rules and golf cart useage. 2 With another successful GAM seminar behind us we can plan now for next month's mini turf conference. This year's program will be held Monday April 10th at Sylvan Resort in Gaylord. Included on the program are several MSU professors as well as Austin Miller and NMTMA director Brent Nelson. Dr. Trey Rogers will have his first opportunity to speakl up north. Ke will discuss "Measuring Hardness of Turf Surfaces.” The morning session will feature several pertinent topics for turf managers in Northern Michigan. Following lunch we will again feature a symposium concentrating on a single subject. This year's topic is "Surviving the Drought of 13S8. Speakers will review the effects of last summer's drought and the continuing effects that may be seen this summer. The entire program for this mini conference can be found elsewhere in Turf Times. Plan now to be at Sylvan for this year's seminar. Then the next time someone asks, you too can say "I attend conferences." See you at Sylvan! ********************************************************************* \ 3 TREASURER,S REPORT 1988-89 Income : Carry over Balance $683.69 1988 Annual Dues 2253.75 1989 Annual Dues to date 3190.00 1988 Mini Conference 700.00 1988 Games 336.50 1988 Shirt Sales 669.00 1988 Membership Book Ads 2372.50 1988 Bank Interest 17.78 TOTAL $10,583.22 Expenses : 1988 Mini Conference 780.00 Office Supplies & Stationery 470.18 Newsletters 1626.12 Postage 340.48 Membership Book Printing 1740.99 Meeting Costs 447.55 Shirt Purchases 625.25 Flowers for Deceased 41.60 Speakers Dinners 10.00 Trophies & Plaques 109.95 Michigan Hospitality Room 250.00 Meeting Jacket 75.00 Crests for Jackets 110.00 1988 Executive Sec. What is meant by old chemicals is that pile sitting in the corner that has red flags around it and no one is to go near. If this has lured you into reading more, then you probably have old chemicals you'd like to get rid of. In this preliminary survey, we need to know what kind of chemicals you have and how much of each. The reason we have to know the type of chemicals and the quantity is for information to obtain the permit for chemical pickup ano disposal. If enough interest is generated, we will hire a truck to go from club to club around Northern Michigan and pickup the chemicals and dispose of properly. A price figure wi11 be available after we get an idea of some quantities. You will not be held accountable to participate if you fill out this survey. We realize some clubs may select to drop out when pricing is finalized. PLEASE LET ME REMIND YOU, THAT IF YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM WHO WILL?
