Louis w a s born in N a s S w e d e n April 23, 1899, and w a s one of nine children. H e left Sweden on F e b r u a r y 24, 1923 and sailed for N e w Y o r k on the ship Drottingholm with a brother and sister and landed in N e w Y o r k on M a r c h 14, 1923. T h e fare for the p a s s a g e at that time w a s $500, which is about the same price a s it is today. A t that time they had to pay a head tax of $8 at Ellis Island N . Y . before they could continue on their journey b y train to T a c o m a where a second cousin lived. Henry W. Land T h e last rites were given for Henry W . L a n d S r . at the V a l l e y Chapel at Mountain V i e w Cemetery on S a t u r d a y , N o v e m b e r 6, 1971. H e n r y p a s s e d a w a y on W e d n e s d a y , N o v e m b e r 3, 1971. H e n r y began his work in the t u r f g r a s s industry in about 1925. H e w a s active in the construction of golf courses and particularly on S a n d Point Golf a n d C o u n t r y Club in Seattle. H e n r y left the turfg r a s s business for brief periods of time between 1925 a n d 1950 but a l w a y s returned to the business of growing g r a s s . Louis worked at the G r e g o r y furniture factory in T a c o m a for awhile and then went on to logging jobs in the w o o d s . H e married Inez in 1928. S h e p a s s e d a w a y in 1950 and Louis never remarried. H e started into the golf course business at the T a c o m a Country and Golf C l u b in 1925 and worked there until he retired in 1965. Louis w a s superintendent of the T a c o m a Country and Golf Club at the time that H e n r y L a n d came. D u e to his wife's ill health, Louis could not a s s u m e the responsibilities of superintendent and asked to step down and work a s an assistant for Henry. Prior to taking over the superintendent's position at T a c o m a Country and Golf Club, Henry served in the capacity of both superintendent and m a n a g e r of Longview Golf and Country C l u b at Longview, Washington. H e became the superintendent of T a c o m a Country a n d Golf C l u b in 1950. H e n r y joined the T u r f g r a s s Association in 1951 where he became treasurer until 1961. In September 1962, H e n r y w a s elected president of the Association a n d served for one year in that capacity. A f t e r 1965, Louis found that he did not like being retired so went to work for his son at the E l k s Allenmore Golf C o u r s e in M a r c h of 1966 and stayed until his health failed in July of 1970. Ed. Note.- . . . Louis Smith w a s one of these dedicated golf course employees who w a s a l w a y s somewhat in the background. T h e r e never w a s a more dependable or trustworthy superintendent or assistant who w a s more concerned about the well-being of a golf course than Louis Smith. His forty years at the T a c o m a Country and Golf Club is evidence of his love and dedication for this type of work. Strangely enough, Louis Smith p a s s e d a w a y about one week before H e n r y L a n d S r . H e n r y worked diligently with a number of turfg r a s s association people in helping to establish the association a s a non-profit corporation, exempt from federal taxes. T h i s took a lot of time and money but w a s finally accomplished. In addition to his duties a s treasurer and president, H e n r y also served a s chairman of the Research Committee on two different occasions over the years. W i t h o u t a doubt, Henry w a s a class A golf course superintendent and helped to improve the image of all golf course superintendents and to a d v a n c e the profession beyond the s t a g e of " g r e e n s keeping." E c o l o g y , a new word to the vocabulary of many, has become an important focal point today. T h e t u r f g r a s s industry requires considerable amounts of pesticides to control weeds, diseases, insects and soil-born organisms. Fertilizers are necessary to grow good turf but all of these things are under close scrutiny by environmentalists. 1 just thought you might be interested in a brief article reprinted from the National Agricultural Chemicals Association news letter which gives another view of this subject. Dr. Norman E . Borlaug, who recently won the Nobel Peace Prize for his wheat breeding program to feed underdeveloped countries, talks about the so called " b a l a n c e of nature" while in N e w York recently. H e said that a s an ecologist, forester, and scientist, he never observed nature being in balance with anything. Rather, he said it had been his experience that nature dealt in one excess after another. T o o much rain, too little rain, drought, forest fires, volcanic eruptions, disease, starvation and a host of other violent actions by nature, which he has observed in his world travels, have convinced him that any " b a l a n c e " on the part of nature is simply another fairy tale.
