COMMENCEMENT 1991 WINTER TERM MICHIGAN STATE UN IVERS ITY Saturday, March 9 THE JACK BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER East Lansing Conferral of Baccalaureate Degrees, 10:00 A.M. Conferral of Graduate Degrees, 3:00 P.M. ACADEMIC COSTUME In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, introduced an academic cos tume code which by design of gowns and hoods would indicate the various degrees, and which by colors would identify the various faculties. orange and white for the University of Texas; blue and gold for UCLA). If the institution has more than one color, the chevron is used to introduce the second color. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hoods and indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains. Three types of gowns are indicated by the code. Those worn by the bachelors have long, pointed sleeves. Those worn by masters have long, closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. Doctor's gowns are faced with velvet. The sleeves are full, round, and open with three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing of the bars on the sleeves may be black or the same color as the binding of the hood. Hoods are made of material identical with the gown and are lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree (e.g., green and white for MSU; burnt The color of the velvet of the hood is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture should be maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, representing science. Generally, the code for the velvet of the hood is the same as listed below for tassels. At Michigan State University, it is customary to identify the candidates graduating from the different departments of study by tassels of the official department color as established by the Intercollegiate Code. MSU also serves people of the state, nation and world through its numerous research, extension, arid international programs. Now in its 135th year, Michigan State University has grown from three buildings and six faculty members to one of the largest universities in the nation. It has more than 3,000 faculty/staff engaged in teaching, research, and public ser vice; more than 400 campus buildings; and more than 5,200 acres of land, of which some 2,100 acres are in existing or planned campus development. More than 42,000 students now attend the university at East Lansing, of which some 85 percent are from Michigan. Michigan State University is committed to diversity and multiculturalism in its student body, in its faculty, in its staff, and in its curriculum and outreach programs. Our student body hails from every county in the State of Michigan, every state in the nation, and 108 foreign nations. Minority students comprise 11.2 percent of the campus population, and in cl udes the largest num ber of African American undergraduate students among all Big Ten schools. Founded in 1855 to educate youth for the major occupa tion of that day -farming- MSU has broadened its offer ings to meet the educational needs of today. The university now has a Graduate School and 14 colleges -Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Letters, Business, Com munication Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering, Hu man Ecology, Human Medicine, James Madison, Natural Science, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, Social Science, and Veterinary Medicine. At the center of all major universities is a cluster of disciplines that constitute the liberal arts and sciences. At MSU, this center consists of three colleges -Arts and Let ters, Natural Science, and Social Science. Providing out standing undergraduate and graduate degree programs with majors in traditional disciplines, these colleges also have special programs that enable students to obtain a broad multidisciplinary education. In addition, in collaboration with the College of Education, the three colleges prepare students to become teachers in the secondary schools of Michigan and the nation. These colleges touch the lives of all undergraduate students at MSU by providing the general education that constitutes approximately one-quarter of the undergraduate program. The Honors College, which enables superior undergraduate students to waive normal graduation requirements and undertake individual programs, attracts many of the nation's frnest young scholars. MSU is proud of its record in producing Rhodes Scholars, a total of thirteen (ten in the last seventeen years); the university also has provided six Marshall Scholarship winners. These British scholarships are two of the most distinguished and presti gious academic awards that an American student can receive. Michigan State University also is a prominent sponsor of National Merit Scholars. MSU adds to the store of knowledge with a wide array of outstanding research activities that are supported by a multimillion dollar sponsor-funding program. Some major facilities include the Pesticide Research Laboratory, oper ated with the U.S. Department of Energy as a national plant biology center; and the MSU/W. K. Kellogg Biological Station, which has been designated as a National Research Preserve. In collaboration with both the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU is examining the nuclei of the heaviest of elements. BenefIts of the uni versi ty are brought to the public by the Agricultural Experiment Station, Lifelong Education, and the Cooperative Extension Service. Their programs provide technical information and formal course work for many Michigan citizens. The Kellogg Center for Continuing Edu cation, one of the frnest conference centers in the nation, annually hosts nearly 300,000 adults who come to the campus for some 600 conferences and other educational meetings. The university's land-grant concept of service is interna tional. Supported by grants from the federal government and private foundations, MSU maintains research and educa tional assistance projects on a worldwide basis. International projects have given many faculty members overseas experi ence, adding a new dimension to their teaching. Michigan State University is a member of the Associa tion of American Universities, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, American Council on Education, American Council of Learned Societies, Interna tional Association of Universities, Association of Graduate Schools, Council of Graduate Schools, and the Committee on Insti tutional Cooperation. 3 HONORARY DEGREE GORDON HIRABA Y ASHI You have set an example for courage and moral responsibility which has not faltered from the time you were a college student to the present. As a youth you took a stand for the rights and freedom of your people, carrying your case against the World War IT internment of Japanese-Americans all the way to the Supreme Court. Though you lost there, you held ftrm in your determination, and in recent years you have led the successful struggle at last to clear the records of those who challenged the unconstitutional orders. A second-generation American, you were a senior at the University of Washington when you refused the internment order in 1942. Your religious principles were matched by your reliance on the Constitution of the United States to guarantee the rights of citizens. They provided the moral energy that carried your objection to the racial discrimination of the order forward through the courts. You went to jail, but you knew then-and we know now-that loss was a victory. After the war, you returned to the University of Washington for your bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. Your distinguished career as a professor of sociology from 1959 to 1983 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton centered in ethnic and minority relations, especially the experience of aboriginal Canadians and Asians in modem Canada. You have devoted years of your professional life to deepening our understanding of the vital contributions these and other groups have made and continue to make to the rich diversity that is the world we live in. Your own understanding has been nourished by frequent teaching and research in other cultures. Throughout the last three decades your work has taken you to Egypt, Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka, and to many universities in the United States and in Canada. Your vision is international, as it is multicultural. In the 1980s your attention returned to the World War IT internment of your people and to your own case, which has been described as "a legal scandal without precedent in the history of American law." With others from the group offour young Japanese-Americans whose cases were decided by the Supreme Court, you contested your conviction. You have cleared the record and won just restitution for yourself and the Americans you represent. In recognition of your courageous persistence in a supremely important struggle, and of your unending work for social justice, Michigan State University is proud to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities. 4 ORDER OF CEREMONIES Baccalaureate Degrees Presiding JOHN DIBIAGGIO, President, Michigan State University PROCESSIONAL The Washington Post March .................................................... ...........................................................................
