Conferral of Graduate Degrees, 3 P.M. ACADEMIC COSTUME In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, introduced an academic costume code which by design of gowns and hoods would indicate the various degrees, and which by colors would identify the various faculties. white for the University of Texas; blue and gold for UCLA). If the institution has more that one color, the chevron is used to introduce the second color. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hoods and indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains. Three typeS of gowns are indicted by the code. Those worn by the bachelors have long, pointed sleeves. Those worn by masters have long, closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. Doctor's gowns are faced with velvet. The sleeves are full, round, and open with three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing of the bars on the sleeves may be black or the same color as the binding of the hood. Hoods are made of material identical with the gown and are lined in the official academic color of the institution confer ring the degree (e.g., green and white for MSU; burnt orange and The color of the velvet of the hood is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture should be maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, repre senting science. Generally, the code for the velvet of the hood is the same as listed below for tassels. At Michigan State University, it is customary to identify the candidates graduating from the different departments of study by tassels of the official department color as established by the Intercollegiate Code. MSU also serves people of the state, nation and world through its numerous research, extension, and international pro grams. Now in its 135th year, Michigan State University has grown from three buildings and six faculty members to one of the largest universities in the nation. It has more than 3,000 faculty/staff engaged in teaching, research, and public service; more than 400 campus buildings; and more than 5,200 acres of land, of which some 2,100 acres are in existing or planned campus development. More than 42,000 students now attend the university at East Lansing, of which some 85 percent are from Michigan. Michigan State University is committed to diversity and multiculturalism in its student body, in its faculty, in its staff, and in its curriculum and outreach programs. Our student body hails from every county in the State of Michigan, every state in the nation, and 107 foreign nations. Minority students comprise 12.1 percent of the campus population, and includes the largest number of African American students among all Big Ten schools. Founded in 1855 to educate youth for the major occupation of that day -farming- MSU has broadened its offerings to meet the educational needs of today . The university now has a Graduate School and 14 colleges -Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Letters, Business, Communication Arts and Sciences, Education,Engineering, Human Ecology, Human Medicine, James Madison, Natural Science, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, So cial Science, and Veterinary Medicine. At the center of all major universities is a cluster of disci plines that constitute the liberal arts and sciences. At MSU, this center consists of three colleges -Arts and Letters, Natural Science, and Social Science. Providing outstanding undergradu ate and graduate degree programs with majors in traditional disciplines, these colleges also have special programs that enable students to obtain a broad multidisciplinary education. In addi tion, in collaboration with the College of Education, the three colleges prepare stUdents to become teachers in the secondary schools of Michigan and the nation. These colleges touch the lives of all undergraduate students at MSU by providing the general education that constitutes approximately one-quarter of the un dergraduate program. The Honors College, which enables supe rior undergraduate students to waive normal graduation require ments and undertake individual programs, attracts many of the nation's fmest young scholars. MSU is proud of its record in producing Rhodes Scholars, a total of thirteen (ten since 1971-72); the university also has provided six Marshall Scholarship win ners: and 11 Churchill Scholarships. These British scholarships are two of the most distinguished and prestigious academic awards that an American student can receive. Michigan State University also is a prominent sponsor of National Merit Scholars. MSU adds to the store of knowledge with a wide array of outstanding research activities that are supported by a multimillion dollar sponsor-funding program. Some major facilities include the Pesticide Research Laboratory, operated with the U.S. Depart ment of energy as a national plant biology center; and the MSU/ W. K. Kellogg Biological Station, which has been designated as a National Research Preserve. In collaboration with both the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of energy, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU is examining the nuclei of the heaviest of elements. BenefIts of the university are brought to the public by the Agricultural Experiment Station, University Outreach, and the Cooperative Extension Service. Their programs provide techni cal information and formal course work for many Michigan citizens, The Kellogg Center for Continuing Education, one of the fInest conference centers in the nation, annually hosts nearly 30,000 adults who come to the campus for some 600 conferences and other educational meetings. The university'S land-grant concept of service is interna tional. Supported by grants from the federal government and private foundations, MSU maintains research and educational assistance projects on a worldwide basis. International projects have given many faculty members overseas experience, adding a new dimension to their teaching. Michigan State University is a member of the Associa tion of American Yniversities, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, American Council on Education, American Council of Learned Societies, Interna tional Association of Universities, Association of Graduate Schools, Council of Graduate Schools, and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. 3 HONORARY DEGREE HAROLD A. POLING Harold A. Poling, you embody the Michigan passion for automobiles and corporate success. As a boy, you helped your mechanic father grind valves on Ford cars. As a young man, your fIrst car and your all-time favorite was a Model A Ford. And, as a corporate executive, you have become a master driver of cars as well as a master leader of people. Following your service in the U.S . Navy during World War II, you enrolled at Monmouth College where you demonstrated leadership as well as scholarship through your involvement in student government and your role as chief justice of the student court. After receiving a bachelor of arts degree in 1949, you went on to Indiana University where you earned a master of business administration degree in 1951. While studying at Indiana, you interned at Ford Motor Company's Steel Division. Following graduation, you returned to that division as a cost analyst in the controller's offIce. You soon demonstrated your capabilities as you rose through various staff-positions and became assistant controller of the Transmission and Chassis Division in 1964. You broadened your scope and knowledge of the Ford Motor Company as you went on to become controller of other divisions. You then extended your expertise geographically when you moved on to Ford of Europe in 1972. Starting as vice-president of fInance, you became president and chairman of the subsidiary and vice-president of the parent company. In these leadership roles, you led Ford of Europe to record earnings, making Europe a major profit center for the parent company. You continued your climb in 1979, becoming executive vice-president of Ford and a member of its Board of Directors. In 1985, you were elected president and chief operating offIcer. Your leadership was a key element in making the period from 1985 through 1989 the most profItable fIve year period in Ford history. Two years ago this month, you reached the mountaintop of success, becoming chairman of the board and chief executive offIcer of the Ford Motor Company. Despite the fullness of your business life, you fInd time to work actively in support of higher education through service to Monmouth College, Indiana University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Oakland University. You also serve your nation as a member of the President's Export Council and the President's Commission on Environmental Quality. In addition, you have given generously of your time and talents to business and civic organizations, such as the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, the National4-H Council, the U.S.-Korea Business Council, and the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan. As you stand at the pinnacle of one of the world's largest corporations, you continue to look ahead as you work for betterment of your company, your industry, your state, your nation, and your world. As a corporate-world role model, you are a challenge to young people graduating today. With great pleasure, therefore, Michigan State University awards you the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. 4 ORDER OF CEREMONIES Baccalaureate Degrees Presiding JOHN DIBIAGGIO, President, Michigan State University PROCESSIONAL The Washington Post March ...............................................................................................................................
