Conferral of Baccalaureate Degrees Saturday, December 10, 9:00 A.M. and 1 :00 P.M. THE JACK BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER East Lansi ng ACADEMIC COSTUME In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of lead ing, American educators, introduced an academic costume code which by design of gowns and hoods would indicate the vari ous degrees, and which by colors would identify the various faculties. orange and white for the University of Texas; blue and gold for UCLA). If the institution has more than one color, the chevron is used to introduce the second color. Colored vel vet or velvteen binds the hoods and indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains. Three types of gowns are indicted by the code. Those worn by the bachelors have long, pointed sleeves. Those worn by masters have long, closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. Doctor's gowns are faced with velvet. The sleeves are full, round, and open with three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing of the bars on the sleeves may be black or the same color as the binding of the hood. Hoods are made of material identical with the gown and are lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree (e.g., green and white for MSU; burnt The color of the velvet of the hood is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture should be maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, representing science. Generally, the code for the velvet of the hood is the same as listed below for tassels. At Michigan State University, it is customary to identify the candidates graduating from the different departments of study by tassels of the official department color as established by the Intercollegiate Code. Now, 140 years later, MSU continues to strive for excellence in providing a diverse student body with a broad and rich combination of liberal and practical education. Today, the East Lansing campus looks quite different than it did in 1855. More than 5,200 acres of land encompass more than 400 buildings, and more than 3,000 faculty and staff are engaged in teaching, research and public service. More than attend the 40,000 students - University's main campus. 85 percent from Michigan - Our student body represents every county in the state, ev ery state in the nation, and 107 foreign nations. Minority stu dents comprise more than 14 percent of the campus population, and our campus includes the largest numbe~ of African American students among all Big Ten schools. Michigan State University's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism in its student body, faculty, staff, curriculum and , outreach programs is exemplified through world-wide services in numerous research, extension, and international programs. More than a century after its agriCUltural beginnings, Michi gan State has a Graduate School and 14 colleges: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts and Letters, the Broad College of Business, Communication Arts and Sciences, Education, Engi neering, Human Ecology, Human Medicine, James Madison, Natural Science, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, Social Science and Veterinary Medicine. Today, three colleges represent the central academic disci plines which most universities refer to as the liberal arts and sci ences: Arts and Letters, Natural Science, and Social Science. These colleges also provide outstanding undergraduate and gradu ate degree programs with majors in traditional disciplines while also providing special programs that enable students to obtain a broad, multidisciplinary education. The College of Education collaborates with the colleges to help prepare students to become teachers in the secondary schools of Michigan as well the nation. Our residence hall system is designed to complement and en hance the learning experiences of our students. The Honors College, which attracts fine young scholars nationwide, enables students to waive standard graduation require ments and undertake enriched academic programs. MSU has produced 13 Rhodes Scholars, six Marshall Scholarship winners, and 11 Churchill Scholarship recipients. These British scholar ships are among the most distinguished and prestigious academic award that an American student can receive. Multimillion dollar, sponsor-funded programs support a wide array of outstanding research activities at MSU. Major fa cilities include the Pesticide Research Laboratory, operated with the U.S. Department of Energy as a national plant biology cen ter; and the MSU/W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, which has been designated as a National Research Preserve. In collabora tion with both the National Science Foundation and the U.S. De partment of Energy, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU is able to study the nuclei of the heaviest elements. The public significantly benefits from the University through University Outreach, MSU Extension Service, and the Agricultural Experiment Station which provides technical infor mation and course work for many Michigan citizens. The Kellogg Center, one of the finest nationwide, annually hosts some 30,000 adults who come to the campus for approximately 600 confer ences and other educational meetings. Service to the international community is equally impor tant. Supported by grants from the federal government and pri vate foundations, MSU sustains educational and research assis tance projects internationally. These projects have given many faculty members overseas experience and have added new di mensions to their teaching. Michigan State University is a member of the Association of American Universities, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, American Council on Education, American Council of Learned Societies, International Association of Universities, Association of Graduate Schools, Council of Graduate Schools, and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. 3 HONORARY DEGREE ROBERT BARKER Robert Barker, as an internationally recognized carbohydrate chemist, you have assumed a major role in shaping the education of physicians and medical scientists through the national committees and boards on which you have served from the very start of your academic career. As an educator, you have shaped the education of countless undergraduates in the biological sciences over the last twenty years through your textbook Organic Chemistry of Biological Compounds. At the mid-point in your academic career, you led the Department of Biochemistry at Michigan State University as its chairperson from 1974 to 1979. Throughout your long and distinguished ,academic life as a scientist and as an administrator--retiring as senior provost of Cornell Univer sity--you have placed the highest priority in your teaching duties, continuing throughout to teach classes in introductory biochemistry. Born in Northumberland, England, you earned the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in zoology and physiology at the University of British Columbia before receiving the Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. Your research in the field of carbohy drate chemistry and biochemistry is characterized by innovation and meticulous care in both execution and interpretation. Your major contributions are the elucidation of the detailed mecha nism of certain oxidations and synthesis of sugars. Your scientific productivity and your teaching excellence continued to flourish even when you assumed administative responsibilities. While at Michigan State University as chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry, you worked out the mechanism for Kiliani cyanohydrin synthesis, which has remained an important tool for carbohy drate chemists. Your effectiveness as a teacher was soundly grounded in your genuine respect for students' needs and interests, and in your willingness always to explore new approaches to teach ing. Your creative capacities have made a great contribution to the administrative effectiveness of the universities you have served, just as they have made you a premier scientist and teacher. At the University oflowa you applied your creative talents as associate dean of the College of Medi cine. At Michigan State University you are remembered for your extraordinary success in recruit ing faculty and in creating a cohesive and functioning department. When you moved to Cornell University in 1979, recognition of your scientific, scholarly, and administrative abilities led to your appointment as vice president of research as advanced studies, and ultimately to provost of Cornell. Since leaving the post as senior provost in 1990, you have been named director of a new Center for Evironrnent at Cornell. In recognition of your high distinction as a scholar, as a teacher, and as a creative academic administrator, Michigan State University is proud to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. 4 HONORARY DEGREE KUNMOCHUNG KunMo Chung, you have earned an international reputation as a scientist who has used his talents in the service of his country and of humanity. As president of the International Atomic Energy Agency, you have helped transform a danger to mankind into a force for peace. Your powerful commitment to humanitarian causes is evidenced by a lifetime of volunteer work with the poor of your country. And your loyalty to Michigan State University has been steadfast from the time you ·were recruited by President John Hannah to enroll for doctoral work in physics- earning the Ph.D. at the age of twenty-three--through your election this year as president of the Michigan State University Alumni Association of Korea. From Michigan State University, still in your early twenties, you pursued your thermonuclear research at Princeton, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and at the Polytechnic Insti tute of New York. In 1971, the Korean Government and the United States Agency for Interna tional Development invited you to return to your country to establish the Korea Advanced Insti tute of Science and Technology. On the basis of your initial proposal to John Hannah, at that time the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development, the institute was funded by the agency, and you were appointed, at the age of thirty-one, as provost of what became the leading technological university in the Republic of Korea. In the years since, your name has been synonymous with the dev~lopment of Korean science and technology systems. As the head of the leading engineering company in Korea, you were responsible for the architectural-engineering work of all nuclear power plants in Korea. The resulting type of nuclear plant is now recognized as the best in the world. Appointed Minister of Science and Technology in 1990, you created the plan that integrates Korean nuclear policy, and reviatlized the engineering industry. Your world leadership in nuclear science and engineering brought you in 1989 to the presi dency of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Currently chairman of the International Nuclear Energy Academy, you continue to place your talents and experience at the service of the world community. This service is humanitarian as well as scientific: you have served as a devoted leader of the Korean Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, general chairman of the Korean Red Cross Youth, and of the Environment Preservation Committee of the Korean Church Council. For your service to international science and technology, while keeping your attention fixed on the good of mankind, Michigan State University is proud to present you with the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering. 5 HONORARY DEGREE RICHARD U. LIGHT From the time that Richard Light watched his father's friends, the Wright brothers, practicing flight in Dayton, Ohio, he was set on a path that led to world-wide adventure and research while flying his own plane. Fourth-generation in a family of physicians, and equipped with the M.D. from the University of Michigan, he made a major contribution to modem neurosurgery in the development of the electrical drill to replace the brace and bit in brain operations. As an educator, he led Kalamazoo College to a preeminent place among liberal arts colleges. As a naturalist, he preserved the land surrounding his home, Lux Arbor, which at his death was donated to Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station. Graduating from Yale in 1924, and studying medicine at Michigan, Richard Light joined the Army Air Corps to qualify as a pilot before training in neurosurgery under Dr. Harvey Cushing, the "father" of American neurosurgery. ill 1934, he embarked with a college friend in a single-engine float plane eastward on a round the-world flight with landings from Greenland to Manila. Winter weather in the Pacific forced them to dismantle the plane, which, after reassembly in Vancouver, they flew south to Mexico and Cuba, and finally to New York. Thus began the career of exploration and study that led to leader ship of the American Geographic Society, to research in Antarctica as a visiting scientist ap pointed by the National Science Foundation, and to a central role in the research focused by the illtemational Geophysical Year of 1957-58. As an educator, Dr. Light served with distinction at Yale as instructor in surgery and director of the surgical laboratory, and at the University of Rochester Medical School. His lifelong commit ment to higher education issued in his twenty-one year chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of Kalamazoo College, which he guided during a period of growth in the student body and in aca demic excellence. He directed the inauguration and endowment of the innovative Kalamazoo College foreign study program, a hallmark of its academic program since its establishment. ill his years at Lux Arbor, Dr. Light assured the preservation of those 1300 acres to protect the soil, vegetation, and animal life close to their natural state. His gift of that preserve markedly enriches Michigan State University's research center at the Kellogg Biological Station. ill recognition of his distinction as a physician, a scientific explorer, an educator, and as a naturalist, Michigan State University is proud to present this honorary degree of Doctor of Medi cine. 6 HONORARY DEGREE IRENE CARSWELL PEDEN Irene Carswell Peden, your work exemplifies the scientific engineering that has placed the United States at the forefront of the world in radio science, the study of electrical waves, and geophysical remote sensing. You are the first American woman engineer-scientist to conduct field work in the interior of the Antarctic continent, providing new [mdings about the polar iono sphere and about radio propagation over long paths in the polar regions. These distinguished contributions to our knowledge of the electromagnetic properties of the polar ice sheet led to your election in 1986 as a Fellow of the Explorer's Club and in 1988 as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. You have been a pioneer as a woman in engineering and in radio science specifically: women were few indeed in either field when you began your work. Yours has been a clear voice for women in the profession while you have taken positions of leadership in the Society of Women Engineers, as a consultant to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organiza tion on the access to technical careers for women in the West Coast region of the United States, and as a member of the Association of Women in Science. After graduating from the University of Colorado, you continued your studies in electrical engineering at Stanford University, where you earned both the Master of Science and the Ph.D. degrees. Since 1961 you have been a member of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington at Seattle, where you are now professor emerita. During the two years immediately past, you have served as director of the Division of Electrical and Communications . Systems at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., an appointment that included directing the Engineering Infrastructure Development Division in 1991 and 1992. You began your professional career gaining experience as an electrical engineer and a research engineer before going on to postgraduate study. From the time that you entered the academic world, your contributions to the advancement of science and engineering have been matched by your contributions to the profession. In the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers- IEEE--you have served on more than forty institute boards and as an institue officer--culminating in your election as president of the Antennas and Propoagation Society in 1989. You have been the chair of the Army Science Board and of the Engineering Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Most recently you have been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In honor of your outstanding contributions in scientific engineering, and in leading the way for other women in the profession that your work has enriched, Michigan State University is proud to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering. 7 HONORARY DEGREE PETER SELIGMANN Peter Seligmann, you live your conviction that true concern for the future of humanity must be rooted in taking care of the land. Your parents came here as immigrants from Germany. You made this country your own, not to exploit for personal interest but to preserve in the interest of all. You were profoundly affected by the landscape of Wyoming during the summer that you were thirteen. At Rutgers University, YOlL majored in wildlife studies in the College of Agriculture when you came to realize that your boyhood exhilaration must be taken seriously, that your voca tion lay in stewardship of the land and of its people. With a master's degree in forestry studies from Yale, you worked in Wyoming before joining the Nature Conservancy, first as California Land Steward, responsible for developing plans for managing 100 land reserves in the Western States, and then as director of the California Nature Conservancy. While others had found that the excitement of land conservancy lay in the acquisi tion and setting aside of preserves, you demonstrated your genius and found your exhilaration in recruiting the support necessary to keep those preserves alive through the years. A year-long sabbatical in Costa Rica and Peru had an effect as profound as that boyhood summer in Wyoming. Shaken by the chasm you saw between the overwhelming natural richness of Latin America and the abject lives of the great majority of people, you came home convinced that conservation must reach beyond the borders of the United States. You also knew that nature preserves, if they are to last, cannot be bought at the cost of keeping local populations poor. You established Conservation International. In Latin America you had seen that natural resources such as rain forests were destroyed. To prevent that destruction you started the Conservation International "debt for nature." You raised money to buy some debt owed land by poor countries and obtained substantial contributions of such debt from banks. You used their assets to obtain commitments from governments to set aside forest and exchanged this debt for local currency which was used for your work in the countries. A crucial element of the "debt for nature" strategy is Conservation International's intense infu sion of inventive expertise to ensure that the people living in conserved areas learn how to pro duce natural products that support them as well as destructive exploitation of their environments could have done. Peter Seligrnann, you embody the motto of Conservation International: "Head in the sky, feet in the mud." For your unswerving and successful dedication of your environmental and eco nomic genius to the good of mankind, Michigan State University is proud to present you with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. 8 ORDER OF CEREMONIES Baccalaureate Degrees Morning Ceremony Presiding PETER MCPHERSON, President, Michigan State University PROCESSIONAL The MSU Jazz Band I ANDREW SPEIGHT, Director AMERICA ........... .............. ............................................................................................................
