DIPLOMAS WILL BE MAILED TO DEGREE RECIPIENTS APPROXIMA TEL Y ONE MONTH AFTER THE END OF THE SEMESTER. MSU is an affirmative·action. equal-opportunity institution. Michigan State University, one of the nation's leading land-grant universities, was founded in 1855 as the first agricul tural college with only six faculty members and three buildings to provide youths with an education in farming. Now, 140 years later, MSU continues to strive for excellence in providing a di verse student body with a broad and rich combination of liberal and practical education. Today, the East Lansing campus looks quite different than it did in 1855. More than 5,200 acres of land encompass more than 400 buildings, and more than 3,000 faculty and staff are engaged in teaching, research and public service. More than 40,000 students - attend the University's main campus. 85 percent from Michigan - Our student body represents every county in the state, every state in the nation, and 107 foreign nations. Minority stu dents comprise more than 14 percent of the campus population, and our campus includes the largest number of African Ameri can students among all Big Ten schools. Michigan State University's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism in its student body, faculty, staff, curricu lum and outreach programs is exemplified through world-wide services in numerous research, extension, and international pro grams. More than a century after its agricultural beginnings, Michigan State has a Graduate School and 14 colleges: Agricul ture and Natural Resources, Arts and Letters, the Broad College of Business, Communication Arts and Sciences, Education, En gineering, Human Ecology, Human Medicine, James Madison, Natural Science, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine, Social Science and Veterinary Medicine. Today, three colleges represent the central academic dis ciplines which most universities refer to as the liberal arts and sciences: Arts and Letters, Natural Science, and Social Science. These colleges also provide outstanding undergraduate and gradu ate degree programs with majors in traditional disciplines while also providing special programs that enable students to obtain a broad, multidisciplinary education. The College of Education collaborates with the colleges to help prepare students to become teachers in the secondary schools of Michigan as well the nation. Our residence hall system is designed to complement and en hance the learning experiences of our students. The Honors College, which attracts fine young scholars nationwide, enables students to waive standard graduation re quirements and undertake enriched academic programs. MSU has produced 13 Rhodes Scholars, six Marshall Scholarship win ners, and 11 Churchill Scholarship recipients. These British schol arships are among the most distinguished and prestigious aca demic award that an American student can receive. Multimillion dollar, sponsor-funded programs support a wide array of outstanding research activities at MSU. Major facilities include the Pesticide Research Laboratory, operated with the U.S. Department of Energy as a national plant biology cen ter; and the MSUIW.K. Kellogg Biological Station, which has been designated as a National Research Preserve. In collabora tion with both the National Science Foundation and the U.S. De partment of Energy, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU is able to study the nuclei of the heaviest elements. The public significantly benefits from the University through University Outreach, MSU Extension Service, and the Agricultural Experiment Station which provides technical infor mation and course work for many Michigan citizens. The Kellogg Center, one of the finest nationwide, annually hosts some 30,000 adults who come to the campus for approximately 600 confer ences and other educational meetings. ,Service to the international community is equally im portant. Supported by grants from the federal government and private foundations, MSU sustains educational and research as sistance projects internationally. These projects have given many faculty members overseas experience and have added new di mensions to their teaching. Michigan State University is a member of the Associa tion of American Universities, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, American Council on Education, American Council of Learned Societies, International Association of Universities, Association of Graduate Schools, Council of Graduate Schools, and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. 2 3 ACADEMIC COSTUME In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission, a group 'of lead ing American educators, introduced an academic costume code which by design of gowns and hoods would indicate the various degrees, and which by colors would identify the various facul ties. orange and white for the University of Texas; blue and gold for UCLA). If the institution has more than one color, the chevron is used to introduce the second color. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hoods and indicates the department o'f faculty 'to which the degree pertains. Three types of gowns are indicted by the code. Those worn by the bachelors have long, pointed sleeves. Those worn by masters have long, closed sleeves with the arc of a circle near the bottom. Doctor' s gowns are faced with velvet. The sleeves are full, round, and open with three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The velvet facing of the bars on the sleeves may be black or the same color as the binding of the hood. Hoods are made of material identical with the gown and are lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree (e.g., green and white for MSU; burnt The color of the velvet of the hood is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. For example, the trimming for the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture should be maize, representing agriculture, rather than golden yellow, representing science. Generally, the code for the velvet of the hood is the same as listed below for tassels. At Michigan State University, it is customary to iden tify the candidates graduating from the different departments of study by tassels of the official department color as established by the Intercollegiate Code. Dark Gray HONORARY DEGREE WILLIAM DAVID BROHN A musician, composer, orchestrator and conduc tor, you have excelled for four decades in your profession. Your varied skills traverse the landscape of music from classical to theatrical to jazz to popular. You earned a B.A. in music from Michigan State University in 1955, following this with a master of music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. You once said early in your career that the "playing of music was like paradise gained - a dream." As a double bass player and pianist, you have lived the dream of many mu sicians, performing with ensembles and orchestras through out the country, including the prestigious Boston Pops. You also moved to the other side of the baton, conducting for national tours of the Robert Joffrey Ballet, the Royal Ballet and popular musicals. You recreated the sound track from the 1937 Rus sian classic film "Alexander Nevsky" in 1987. Since then, the film has been shown around the country accompanied by major orchestras to rave reviews. In 1995 you super- vised the first production by a University orchestra for the presentation of the film on the MSU campus. In addition to this and other film orchestrations, you have orchestrated numerous albums for classical and operatic stars such as James Galway, Placido Domingo and Marilyn Home. You have excelled in the world of theater, receiving a Grammy Award nomination, as well as the Drama Desk A ward for "Outstanding Orchestration" in 1991 for two shows in the same year. Your orchestration for "Crazy for You" helped earn it the Tony Award for "Best Musical of 1992." Today your eclectic projects include the orchestra tion of the musical "Ragtime" and a retrospective of the works of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Your sustained success since graduating from Michigan State reflects a pioneering spirit to venture into new musical territories that makes us proud to claim you as one of our own. It gives me great pleasure to recognize your achievements by granting you the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts. HONORARY DEGREE FRANK ALBERT COTTON Your contributions to inorganic chemistry have been called "seminal," "revolutionary," and "influential" by your colleagues and the scientific press. As a researcher, theoretician, educator and author, your work has "singu larly redirected the course of modem inorganic chemistry." Soon after joining the faculty of MIT in 1957 as an Assistant Professor, you wasted little time in challenging a hundred year's worth of conventional wisdom on the na ture of metal compounds. Your research eventually proved the existence of multiple-bonded metal compounds, creat ing a paradigm shift in the field of inorganic chemistry that has been called "one of the most stunning scientific dis coveries of this century." Your research and depth of knowledge has led to some 1,500 scientific papers and a number of standard text books on inorganic chemistry. In fact, as a protege of yours who teaches at Michigan State has said, "Every inorganic chemistry student, at the undergraduate and graduate level, knows Albert Cotton, through his textbooks." Translated into numerous languages, your textbooks have enlightened and inspired a generation of chemists around the world. In your laboratory you have trained some of the most influen tIal chemists of our day. And, I am happy to report that two recent MSU graduate students are currently fortunate to be under your direction. You also have influenced greatly the profession of science, serving on prestigious boards, such as the National Science Board which has oversight over the National Sci ence Foundation. You have served as Councilor of the American Chemical Society and as Chair of its Division of Inorganic Chemistry in 1978. You have received numer ous national and international awards, including the Na tional Medal of Science, presented by President Reagan in 1982. You are a member of the National Academy of Sci ences. In recognition of your forty years as a pioneering researcher and an outstanding educator, I am pleased to present to you the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. 4 5 HONORARY DEGREE DAVID C. HOLLISTER HONORARY DEGREE HOMER NEAL A leader in Michigan politics for 20 years, your career has embodied the ideals of "community service," championing educational, health, environmental, social and civil rights causes for the citizens of Michigan. Born in Kalamazoo, you earned a master's degree in government and history from Michigan State University in 1967. Your public service began in 1965 as a teacher during which time you developed Lansing's first alterna tive school program. You also taught in the Mississippi Freedom School during the Civil Rights Movement. After serving as a county commissioner for six years, you were elected to represent Lansing in the Michigan House of Rep resentatives in 1974. As State Representative you dedicated yourself to improving the lives of ordinary citizens. You chaired com mittees on Social Services, Mental Health, Public Health and Cot;rections and served on many others. You led the passage of important legislation affecting minority com munities, senior citizens, child care, health care, consumer rights, clean water and governmental reform. For your work, you have been honored by numerous civic and pro fessional organizations. In 1993 you were elected as Mayor of Lansing, where you continue to put people first. You have been a catalyst in developing a regional identity and cooperation among governments, business and education through the Greater Lansing community. You have practiced the principles of diversity and inclusion throughout your career-principles which Michi gan State University warmly embraces. In recognition of this spirit and your contributions to the betterment of the Lansing community and the citizens of Michigan, I am pleased to award you the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. As a professor and university administrator, you have had a singular impact on the realms of high energy physics and higher education for the past 30 years. You have distinguished yourself as a top-flight researcher at the University of Michigan as well through your service as Vice President for Research and, most recently, as interim presi dent. After earning a bachelors degree in physics at In diana University in 1961, you went on to the University of Michigan where you earned a Ph.D. in physics in 1966. After appointments at Indiana University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the 1970s and 1980s, you returned to the University of Michigan in 1987 as the Chair of the Physics Department. While at the University of Michigan, you partici pated with other leading physicists in the DZERO experi ment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Last year this group of scientists made the remarkable discov ery of the "top quark," one of the basic building blocks of matter. Your continuing active involvement in research at Fermi Lab along with your equally demanding work as Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan is a source of inspiration. The quality of your work in both arenas, one MSU professor noted, has "commanded an enor mous measure of respect from both physicists and univer sity presidents." Your quest for scientific knowledge has garnered accolades from your colleagues and numerous awards and appointments to scientific and educational boards, includ ing the Smithsonian Institution and the National Science Board. You have testified before Congress on matters rang ing from the funding of national laboratories to the state of science education in colleges and universities. As a colleague, and as a representative of another major research university in the state, I commend your vi sion and leadership in higher education and fundamental scientific research. It is my pleasure to award you the hon orary degree of Doctor of Science. HONORARY DEGREE MARIL YN HORNE The premier mezzo-soprano singer of our time, you have performed in the world's leading opera and concert halls. The New York Times described you, "She is surely the most American of all operatic singers ... in the best sense: a can-do technical command of the voice, ready intelligence, Protestant work ethic ... , firm grounding in the popular cul ture, melting-pot versatility." By your own account, your career began before you were two years old, singing in your native Pennsylva nia. When you were four, you sang at a rally for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And since that time, you have sung at the White House for presidents of both parties, including, most recently, at President Clinton's 1993 Inaugural. In 1954, you came into the public spotlight with your role in the movie Carmen Jones. Soon after that the great composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky took notice of your talents and you joined him for pert'ormances at the Venice Festival and other venues throughout Europe. In 1964 you returned to the United States to join the famous San Francisco Opera. Eventually, you went on to perform with all the world's best opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Paris Opera and Chicago Lyric, to name a few. You have distinguished yourself as a versatile and tireless recitalist and soloist with over 1,000 performances over the years. As comfortable with Porter and Gershwin as Verdi and Rossini, you have been instrumental in nour ishing and popularizing American music by bringing to it the same energy and commitment you lavish on demand ing operatic roles. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, in cluding the National Endowment for the Arts' National Medal of Arts, several Grammy awards and the coveted Kennedy Center Medal of Honor, you have distinguished yourself as a mentor and educator of young musicians. You recently formed The Marilyn Home Foundation, a nonprofit organization, devoted to training the next generation of art ists. For this dedication to the education of future art ists, and in recognition of your wonderful career, I am hon ored to present to you the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts. 6 7 ORDER OF CEREMONIES Baccalaureate Degrees Morning Ceremony Presiding PETER MCPHERSON, President, Michigan State University ORDER OF CEREMONIES Baccalaureate Degrees Afternoon Ceremony Presiding PETER MCPHERSON, President, Michigan State University PROCESSIONAL The MSU Jazz Band II JOSEPH LULLOFF, Director PROCESSIONAL The MSU Jazz Band I ANDREW SPEIGHT, Director STAR SPANGLED BANNER....
