May, East Lansing, Comptroller and Treasurer • Michigan State College As one of the leading land grant colleges and the old est agricultural college in the world, Michigan State Col lege provides a technical, practical, and cultural educa tion for its student body, in addition to extensive research and extension services to the people of Michigan. Now in its 98th year, Michigan State College has grown from two buildings and six faculty members to the ninth largest university in the nation. It has approximately 1, 300 staff members engaged in teaching and research, 124 per manent and 988 temporary buildings, and almost 12,000 acres of land, including 540 acres in the campus area prop er. Founded in 1855 to educate youth for the major occu pation of that day--farming--Michigan State College has broadened its offerings as young people, preparing for oth er vocations, have sought the advantages of college train ing. Today, approximately 100 different courses of study are offered in the Schools of Agriculture, Business and Public Service, Education, Engineering, Home Economics, · Science and Arts and Veterinary Medicine. This excludes the curriculum of the Basic College, which has been hailed as one of the most progressive ideas for higher education in the nation today, and the Graduate School, which offers 58 courses leading to the degrees of master of arts, mas ter of science, master of music, master of forestry, doc tor of philosophy, and doctor of education. Michigan State College continually strives to expand its service to the people of the state through the Agricul- tural Experiment Station, the Cooperative Extension Ser vice and the Continuing Education Service. The Agricul tural Experiment Station conducts research on campus and at five off-campus substations. Through the Michigan Co operative Extension Service, more than 125, 000 families are reached with technical information on agriculture, homemaking and the 4-H Club program. The field staff, located in every county, extends M.S. C.'s campus into every township in Michigan. During the 1952-53 year, the Continuing Education Service reached about 150, 000 per sons in programs conducted both on campus and in local communities. The Continuing Education Service also di rects the M.S. C. Evening College which, during 1952-53, enrolled about 400 students each term. Today, more than 13, 000 students from Michigan and other states and from nations all over the world are at tending the college at East Lansing--8, 20 0 of whom are housed on the campus proper. With about 85 percent of these students coming from communities in every section of the state, Michigan State College is doing its part to fill the greatly increased demand of the younger generation for higher education . In the agricultural, business and professional fields, Michigan State College has proved its worth to the people of the state of Michigan, paying dividends many times the appropriation for its maintenance made each year by the state and national governments. Noted for its democratic and friendly spirit, the student body harmonizes with the college faculty to make Michigan State College a first-class educational institution.
