Farmers  and  their  families,  seeking 
new 
information  on  agriculture  and 
homemaking,  journeyed  to  East  Lansing 
Jan.  30-Feb.  3  for  the  annual  Farmers' 
Week  at  MSC.  Official  estimates  placed 
the  attendance  at  more  than  40,000,  set 
ting  one  of  the  crowd  records  of  the 
35-year  history  of  the  event. 

The  Spartan  campus,  turned  into  an 
agricultural  exposition  for  the  week, 
offered  the  visitors  a  variety  of  activ 
ities.  Exhibits  were  set  up  in  Demon 
stration  Hall,  Agricultural  Engineering 
building,  Olds  Engineering  building,  and 
Home  Economics  building. 

Touring  visitors  found  such  things  as 
television  in  the  electrical  engineering 
building  and a  completely  equipped  saw 
tennis 
mill  erected  near  the  college's 
courts. 

Outstanding  Speakers  Appear 

Included  on  the  program  were  brush-
up  sessions  on  agricultural  economics, 
silage  making,  turkey  raising,  and count 
less  others.  Farm  women  attended  a 
dress  review  presented  by  home  eco 
nomics  students. 

Afternoons  were  devoted  to  general 
sessions  in  the  college  auditorium.  Fea 
tured  speakers  were  Allan  Kline,  presi 
dent  of  the  American  Farm  Bureau 
Federation;  Marquis  Childs,  syndicated 
columnist;  and Dr. Gerald  Wendt,  scient 
ist  and  author. 

Champion  Steer  on  Hand 

A  special  visitor  to  the livestock  show 
was  "Judge  Roy  Bean,"  judged  grand 
champion  steer  of the International  Live 
stock  Exposition  at  Chicago  last  Decem 
ber.  The  animal  was  purchased  for  a 
record  price  of  $13,800  by  Dearborn 
Motors,  Detroit  tractor  firm,  and is now 
on  a  nation-wide  tour  of  farm  shows. 
From  his  comfortable  quarters  in  the 
corner  of  the  livestock  judging  pavilion, 
the  "Judge"  emerged  long  enough  to lead 
the  parade  of  livestock  Friday  night and 
was  then  rushed  to  Capital  City  airport 
where  he  boarded  a  chartered  cargo 
plane  to  fly  to  Tampa,  Florida,  for  the 
opening  of  the  Florida  State  Fair  on 
Saturday.

Home  Be  Alumnae 
Plan  May  Reunion 

Home  economics  alumnae,  who learned 
the  art of homemaking  at Michigan  State 
College,  will  gather  for  their  second  an 
nual  reunion  on the  campus  this  spring. 
More  than  300 home  ec graduates  from 
all  over  Michigan  are expected  to  return 
for  the  Home  Economics  Alumnae  Day, 
tentatively  set  for  May 6. 

More  than  150 alumnae  from  the  Lan 
sing  area  attended  the  first  get-together 
last  spring.  The  success  of  last  year's 
program  and  numerous  demands  for  an 
expanded  program  each  year  prompted 
the  School  of  Home  Economics  to  go 
ahead  with  plans  for  making 
it  an 
annual  affair. 

Tentative  plans  call  for  a  coffee  hour, 
sight-seeing  tours  of  the  campus,  lunch 
at  the  Union  building,  and  a  short  pro 
gram  depicting 
the  activities  of  the 
School  of  Home  Economics.

Between  3,000  and  5,000  former  stu 
dents  of  Michigan  State  will  gather  for 
the  biggest  Alumni  Day  in  the  history 
of  Michigan  State  College  June  3,  ac 
cording 
to  Tom  H.  King,  director  of 
alumni  relations. 

Will  Graduate  4,000 
As  in  previous  years,  Alumni  Day  will 
be  part  of  a  climactic  week-end,  culmin 
ating  with  the  graduation  of  approxi 
mately  4,000  students—a  new  record— 
at  the  92nd  annual  Commencement  exer 
cises  in  Jenison  fieldhouse  Sunday  after 
noon. 

Festivities  will  get  under  way  Friday 
afternoon,  when  alumni  will  begin  regis 
tering  in  the  main  lobby  of  the  MSC 
luncheons  and  dinners 
Union.  Special 
will  be held  by  more  than  a  dozen  classes, 
and  special  arrangements  will  be  made 
for  alumni  whose  classes  are  not  having 
special  meetings. 

Clark  Gets  Kedzie  Cane 
The  class  of  1900  will  enter  the  ranks 
of  the  Patriarches  at  a  special  Saturday 
banquet.  The  Kedzie  Cane,  given  to  the 
living  member  of 
the  oldest  class  of 
MSC,  will  be  officially  awarded  to  Henry 
V.  Clark,  '78,  Clearwater,  Kan. 

MSC's  "Flying  Prof"  Leads  Unique 
Air-Borne  Classroom  to  Europe

Norway,  Sweden,  Belgium  and  Holland. 

Every  state  in  the  nation  will  be  repre 
sented  on  the  trip,  Horn  said,  with  par 
ticipants  being  selected  by  special  state 
educational  committees.  Major  obliga 
tion  of  participants  will  be  to  describe 
their  experiences 
to  key  meetings  of 
business,  industrial,  labor,  agricultural, 
religious  and  lay  groups. 

Financed  by  Many  Groups 

The  classroom  will  be  financed  by 
scholarships  from  business,  industry  and 
labor  organizations  and  other  individu 
als  around  the  country  on  a  state  basis. 

"With  vision  and  initiative  on  the  part 
of  American  educators  and  cooperation 
from  the  federal  government,  industrial, 
labor  and  other  national  leaders,  the  air 
plane  will  make  the  whole  world  a  class 
room  and  the  'air  age  of  education'  will 
be  here,"  Horn  said. 

But  other  leaders  of  education  differ 
with  the  MSC  professor.  The  "air  age 
of  education,"  because  of  Horn's  leader 
ship,  is  already  here,  they  say.

Gone  are  the  days  when  the  only  way 
students  could  study  far-away  places  was 
in  musty  classrooms  from  dusty  books 
and  maps. 

Today,  the  classroom  has  taken  wings 
—the  books  have  turned  into  real  people 
and  places—maps  have  become  rivers, 
oceans,  highways,  and 
the  panoramic 
view  of  a  nation  is  from  the  window  of 
an  airplane.

Technician  John  W.  Pope.  The  exhibit 
included  an  adult  male  and  female,  four 
"kits,"  and  a  yearling,  all  trapped

Michigan  in  1948. 

An  estimated  60,000  persons  will  visit 
the  museum  during  the  year,  said  Prof. 
Stack.  About  half  of  them  will  be  school 
children  from  all  parts  of  the  state.

The  new  record  appeared  despite  a 
in  veteran  enrollment,  a 
sharp  drop 
major  factor  since  ex-GI's  began  a  march 
back  to  campuses  in  1946.  Veterans,  who 
comprised  52 percent  of  the  student  body 
last  winter,  dropped  to  40  percent. 

Enrollment  of  new  students  for  fall 
and  winter  quarters,  however,  forecast 
a  drastic  change  in  the  "three-men-to-a-
woman"  ratio  which  has  existed  since 
the  war.  With  women  students  consti 
tuting  40  per  cent  of  the  freshman  class, 
coeds  may  find  themselves  having  to  "get 
along"  next  year  with  two  or  two-and-a-
half  men  each. 

Final  fall  enrollment  figures,  however, 
tell  the  story  of  the  growth  of  Michigan 
State. 

The  end  of  World  War  II,  1945,  was 
the  last  year  for  Michigan  State  as  a 
small  college.  Fall  enrollment  was  5,329. 
The  next  fall  brought  an  unprecedented 
13,126, double  the  highest  pre-war  figure, 
to  East  Lansing. 
In  1946,  fall  registra 
tion  reached  15,208,  and  some  16,010 
were  enrolled  in  the  fall  of  1948. 

Total  enrollment  in  the  fall  of  1949 
was  16,243,  and  Michigan  State  became 
the  eleventh 
the 
nation.

able.  With  the  graduation  of  veterans, 
other  college  enrollments  are  on  the  de 
crease.  At  Michigan  State,  however, 
each  new  term  brings  a  statistical  sur

Fables  of  Fantasy 

The  Spartan  magazine,  campus  humor 
publication,  cut  a  few  new  touches  in  the 
January  issue  as  a  swan  song  for  Editor 
Mary  Stewart,  Detroit,  who  polished  off 
30  pages  of  campus  humor,  and  prepared 
for  graduation  in  March. 

The  magazine  ran  a  gruesome  gamut 
from  "East  Lansing's  Own  Skid  Row," 
a  fantasy  inspired  by  a  series  in  a  De-

swallowers  of  another  hectic  era  were 
a  little  aghast  this  winter  at  the  ingenu 
ity  of  their  sons  and  daughters  at  Michi 
gan  State  College.

coed,  was  trying  to  forget  "half  a  pub

innocent  victim.

paddled  her  before  between-class  throngs 
on  the  steps  of  Berkey  Hall.  Miller,  who 
claimed  to  be  her  steady  boy  friend  after 
one  date,  said  "she'd  been  going  around 
with  another  guy." 

The  stunt  was  a  spectacular  success 
for  the  nation's  radio  stations  and  news 
papers. 

Miller  got  his  come  uppance  when  it 
was  reported  that  he  had  made  arrange 
ments  to  have  a  photographer  and  re 
porter  on  the  scene.  From  that  point  on, 
the  publicity  stunt  and  his  social  pros 
pects,  fizzled. 

Other  student  antics  were  less  spec 
tacular.  Senior  men,  led  by  their  class 
president,  Edward  Pino,  blossomed  out 
in  green  corduroy  trousers  to  "distin 
guish  ourselves  from  underclassmen." 

Student  Council  members  who  voted 
themselves  pin  awards  to  be  purchased 
from  the  Council  kitty  fund  found  them 
selves  needled  by  John  Ringle,  Grand 
Rapids,  president  of  the  sophomore  class. 
He  organized  a  "Pins  for  the  Council" 
campaign  and  rounded  up  hundreds  of 
clothespins,  hair  pins,  safety  pins  and 
old  "Willkie  buttons"  in  two  days,  after 
which  he  terminated  his  campaign.

Terry  Olson,  of  Grand  Rapids,  was 
assigned  by  Phi  Delta  Theta  actives  to

the  Phi  Gamma  Delta  House  at  North 
western  University. 

Olson  drove  to  Evanston,  111., reported 
to  the  Phi  Delta  Theta  house  there  and 
was  ordered  to  kiss  a  certain  coed  he  had 
never  met.  He  carried  out  orders.  "No 
trouble  there  at  all," he  reported. 

Then  he  contacted 

the  Phi  Gamma 
Deltas.  Their  hospitality  included  a  date 
with  another  coed—and  a  night's  lodging. 
While  trusting  Phi  Gammas  slept,  Olson 
headed  back  to  East  Lansing  with  their 
trophy.

Quonsets  Abandoned 

Quonset  Village,  a  community  of  steel 
huts  which  since  1946  has  housed  an 
overflow  of  male  students  from  the  col 
lege's  dormitories,  will  be  abandoned  at 
the  end  of  March.

Housing  Director  Richard  A.  Geer  said 
that

space  for  all  male  students  desiring  on-
campus  housing. 

Completion  in  March  of  Shaw  Hall  for 
Men,  which  will  house  1,600,  will  bring 
to  4,500  the  number  of  men  that  can  be 
housed  in  modern  dormitories. 

Karl  H.  McDonel,  secretary  of  the  col 
lege,  said  the  quonset  huts  would  not  be 
dismantled  or  removed.  "We  still  have 
plenty  of  use  for  them,"  he  added. 

The  104  metal  eight-man  huts  have 
housed  more  than  6,000  Spartans  since 
they  were  erected  four  years  ago. 

Faculty  Affairs 

Distinction  came  to  faculty  members 
from  many  educational  areas  during  the 
past  few  months.  Some  became  officers 
in  professional  and  national  organiz 
ations  and  others  published  books 
in 
specialized  fields. 

Pres.  John  A.  Hannah  became  chair 
man  of  a  committee  appointed  by  Gov. 
G.  Mennen  Williams  to  study  the  pros 
pects  for  bringing  the  proposed  United 
States  Air  Academy  to  Michigan. 

Pres.  Hannah  and  members  of  his 
committee  conferred  in  late  January  with 
Pres.  Harry  S.  Truman  and  other  high 
officials  of  the  Department  of  Defense 
in  Washington  on  proposed  sites  for  the 
academy  in  Michigan. 

Dr.  H.  J.  Stafseth,  director  of  bio 
logical  science  and  head  of  the  Depart 
ment  of  Bacteriology  and  Public  Health, 
was  named  to  the  American  Board  of 
Veterinary  Public  Health.  The  board 
establishes  standards  for  veterinarians  in 
the  U.  S.  Public  Health  Service.  He  was 
also  named  a  special  consultant  to  US 
PHS  disease  center  in  Atlanta,  Ga. 

Prof.  Ralph  F.  Turner,  of  the  police 
administration  department,  became  a 
charter  member  and  secretary-treasurer 
of  the  American  Academy  of  Forensic 
Science  in  an  organizational  meeting  at 
Chicago  Jan.  26-28.  Prof.  Turner  was 
also  made  an  honorary  member  of  the 
Cuban  Society  of  Police  Science  and 
Criminalistics  in  recognition  of  his  "dis 
tinguished  efforts

Gifts  and  Grants 

Research  and  study  grants

the  scope  of 
educational  programs  at  Michigan  State 
were  received  in  January. 

Largest  single  gift  was  $10,000  from 
the  Institute  of  Applied  Hotel  Economics, 
Detroit.  The  sum  was  the  first  payment 
of  $90,000  pledged  by  the  Institute  for 
furnishings  and  equipment  of  the  Kel 
logg  Center  for  Continuing  Education, 
now  under  construction  on  the  campus. 
Swift  and  Company  of  Chicago  gave 
$6,200  for  a  study  of  the  microscopic 
anatomy  of 
the  Regional 
Poultry  Research  Laboratory  of  East 
Lansing.

Seven  scholars  began  new  research  and 
writing  projects  into  Midwestern  culture 
under  a  $5,055  fund  approved  by  a  Mich 
igan  State  College  committee  administer 
ing  a  $30,000  grant  from  the  Rockefeller 
Foundation,  New  York.

The  grants  bring  to  $7,650  the  total 
allocated  for  the  study  since  inception  of 
the  long-term  project  in  July,  1949,  ac

Research  Laboratory  in Many Fields  Will Increase  Research

This  may  come  as  quite  a  shock,  but 
for  more  than  300  years  men  with  more 
at  stake  than  a  fond  memory  of  their 
wedding  day  have  been  pressing  flower

the  nation's  16th  oldest  herbarium  watch

aid  in  everything  from  weed  control  to

"Our  herbarium  here 

is  a  sort  of 
voucher  to  represent  what  grows  in  cer 
tain  areas,"  said  Prof.  William  B.  Drews,

the  MSC  botany  department. 
"It's  a  research  tool  for  work  on  vegeta 
tion,"  he  said.

The  movie  has  become  standard  equip 
ment  for  college  alumni  personnel,  along 
with  football  films,  in  their  contacts  with 
alumni  clubs  all  over  the  nation.  It  is 
also  being  utilized  in  college  cooperation 
programs  with  high  schools,  extension 
personnel,  civic  and  other  groups.

outlines  the  teaching,  research  and  ex 
tension  programs  of  the  college,  in  addi

Michigan  has  some  2,500 

types  of 
plants,  including  trees,  according  to  Prof. 
Charles  L. Gilly, keeper  of  the  herbarium. 
The  herbarium  has  well  over  100,000 
types  of  plants  from  all  parts  of  the 
world,  and  ranks  12th  in  the  nation  and 
sixth  among  other  state  colleges. 

Started  by  Prentiss  in  1865 
The  MSC  herbarium  was  begun 
in 
1865  by  A.  Prentiss,  and  many  of  the 
early  mounted  species  were  catalogued 
and  contributed  by  George  F.  Comstock, 
of  Lenawee  county,  brother  of  the  late 
Dr.  W.  J.  Beal,  noted  MSC  botanist. 
These  early  samples  are  used

quently  to  establish  relationships  between 
the  first  plants  in  Michigan  and 
later 
ones. 

The  orchid,  which  grows  wildly 
in 
Michigan  swamps,  is  dying  out  mainly 
because  of  the  march  of  science.  Many 
of  the  swamps  have  been  drained  for 
sanitary  and  health  reasons. 

Too,  orchids  are  picked  more  rapidly 
than  usual—many,  no  doubt,  are  worn 
to  weddings. 

Research  in  botany,  entomology,  horti 
culture,  farm  crops,  and  soil  science  is 
being  speeded 
in  the  new  greenhouse 
range  located  on  MSC's  south  campus.

can  be  adjusted  to  resemble  almost  any 
kind  of  climate. 

The  greenhouses  were 

constructed 
from  funds  appropriated  by  the  Michigan 
Legislature  at  the  request  of  the  Michi 
gan  Agricultural  Conference.  Other 
assistance  came  from  the  Farmers'  and 
Manufacturers'  Beet  Sugar  association, 
Saginaw,  and 
the  Federal  Bureau  of 
Plant  Industry.

emphasis  or  elimination  of  collegiate 
athletics.  But  he  did  have  some  sharp 
words  about  current  trends  in  the  field 
of  college  sports.

State  boxing  team  can  be  described  in 
one  word—"power." 

Every  weight  division  has  at  least  one 
lad  who  can  trade  leather  with  the  best 
in  collegiate  ranks.  This  may  give  Michi 
gan  State  a  better  balanced  team  than 
in  1949,  when  the  Spartans  were  second 
in  the  NCAA  tournament  held  at  East 
Lansing.

Spieser,  a  member  of  the  1948  Olympic 
boxing  team,  got  his  first  taste  of  col 
legiate  competition  in  the  Spartan's  first 
dual  meet  of  the  season,  a  5-3  victory 
over  Penn  State.  As  was  expected,  the 
im 
husky  sophomore  pounded  out  an 
pressive  win. 

Rae  Johnston,  155-pounder,  another 
Detroiter,  made  his  debut  an  auspicious 
one  by  scoring  the  only  TKO  of 
the 
meet.  The  hard-hitting  Johnston  caught 
his  man  in  the  third  round,  when  the 
bout  was  stopped. 

Six  Veterans  Return 
Hank  Amos,  John  Flynn,  and  John 

Tierney,  at  125,  130.  and  135  pounds  re 
spectively,  take  care  of  the  lower  weights 
for  the  Spartans.  All  are  cagey,  experi 
enced  boxers  with  plenty  of  power. 

The  145-pound  division  is  in  the  hands 
of  Pat  Dougherty,  1949  NCAA  runner  up 
at  135  pounds.  A  clever  boxer  with  a 
good  punch,  Dougherty  is  doing  an  ex 
cellent  job  filling  Davey's  spot. 

Marek  is  Heavyweight 
Jim  Gemmell,  another  NCAA  runner 
up,  has  charge  of  the  165-pound  class 
for 
the  Spartans.  Gemmell  developed 
rapidly  toward  the  end  of  the  season  and 
should  be  a  strong  contender  against  all 
opponents  this  year. 

Anchor  man  on  the  squad  is  Gabby 
Marek, 
is  a

fighter  of  the  old  school,  a  slugger  with 
devastating  power.  He  can  end  a  bout 
with  a  single  punch  from  either  hand—

Rapchak  Breaks  Basketball 
Record in Marquette  Game 

Bill  Rapchak,  Michigan  State's  all-time 
leading  scorer,  smashed  his  own  single 
game  scoring  mark  of  29  points,  set 
against  Virginia  last  year,  with  a  34-
point  spree  in  the  Marquette  game  re 
cently.  Sam  Fortino,  ace  scorer  during 
the  1945-46  season,  previously  held  the 
modern  mark  of  26  points.

Sebo  was  a  stellar  performer  on  three 
Michigan  State  grid  teams  in  1934,  1935, 
and  1936,  during  which  time  the  Spar 
tans  won  20  games,  lost  four  and  tied 
two.  During  the  three  year  period  the 
Spartans  defeated  arch-rival  Michigan  on 
each  occasion. 

A  native  of  battle  Creek,  Mich.,  Sebo 
had  high  school  coaching  experience  at 
Petoskey,  and  went  to  Alma  college  in 
1946  as  football,  baseball,  and  basket 
ball  ;oach.  His  1948  grid  team  was  un 
defeated  and  won  the  MIAA  champion 
ship.

MSC Baseball  Season 

Just  as  sure  a  sign  of  approaching 
spring  as  the  first  robin  is  the  sight  of 
Michigan  State  baseball  players  heading 
to  daily  indoor  workouts  on  the  campus. 
John  H.  Kobs,  beginning  his  26th  year 
as  head  baseball  coach,  will  have  a  tough 
job  replacing  star  performers  of  the  1949 
team—a  team  which  compiled  a  record  of 
19  wins,  8  losses  and  one  tie. 

Ten  Lettermen  Return 

Kobs  has  ten  lettermen,  plus  several 
likely-looking  sophomores,  working  out 
daily  in  the  Stock  Pavilion.  Capt.  Jack 
Kinney,  Owosso  senior,  heads  the  list  of 
veterans.  Kinney  batted  a  lusty  .344  last 
season  and  led  the  team  in  home  runs 
and  runs  batted-in  with  35.
