Alpine  P l a n t s. 

At  the  meeting  of  the  Botanical 
Club  Tuesday  night,  Prof.  U.  P. 
'ledrick  spoke  on  "Alpine  Plants." 
His  talk  was  commenced  by  a  brief 
description  of  plant  zones  and  how 
they  are  defined  by  the  flora  of  cer 
tain  hiijh  mountains.  According  to 
observations  on  Mt.  Ranier, 
there 
are  seven  plant  zones,each  of  which 
is  marked  by  certain  plants  and  trees 
found 
in  no  other  altitude.  T he

our  Alma  Mater's  hopes  and  aspira 
tions  on  the  athletic  field  and  our 
enthusiasm  over  occasional  contests 
furnish  a  wholesome  recreation 
to 
brains  wearied  by  study;  because  as 
,  the  result  of  student-athletics  in  the 
institution,*the  outlook  presented  to 
the  boy  before  whom  the  question 
of  education  or  no  education  remains 
as  yet  undecided,  is that  there  is  here 
love,  as  well  as  an 
something 
to  dig  and  delve  and 
opportunity 
learn—if 
the  purposes 
underlying  the  maintenance  of  ath 
letics,  then  the  teams  must  consist  of 
real  fellow-students  whom  we  can 
admire;  the  football  games,baseball 
games,  track  sports,  and  all  must  be

have  caused  the  authorities  of

Perhaps  one  of  the  most  widely 
discussed  problems  of  the  day  is  the 
negro  problem,  and  I  will  endeavor 
to  place  before  you  a few  facts  from 
which  you  may  draw  your  own 
conclusions  as  to  the  solution.

T he  Pilgrims  had  hardly  settled 
at  P l y m o u th  when  the  negro  was 
brought  from  Africa  as  a  slave.  He 
represented  the  lowest  type  of  hu 
manity,  and  had  a  religion  called 
fetichism,  or 
signs, 
sacred  places,  charms,  lucky  bones, 
omens,  etc.  For  250  years,  or  until 
the  Civil  W a r,  he  was  kept 
in 
slavery  and  treated  by  his  master  as 
a  dumb  animal.  But  by  this  con 
tact  with  the  white  people  and  being 
governed  by  absolute  authority,  he 
gained  what  we  might  call  an 
Anglo-Saxon  consciousness.  He  has, 
so  far  as  his  intelligence  has  per 
mitted,  acquired 
ideals  and 
aspirations  peculiar  to  the  people  by 
whom  he  was  held  in  servitude,  and 
since  the war  has  been  granted  some 
of  the  rights  that  the  white  people 
now  hold.

several  things  of  rather  peculiar  in

In  many  respects  Montana 
is  similar  to  Idaho,  and  in  others  it 
is  radically  different.

can  console  ourselves  by  stating  that

first  ambition  after  arriving  here  was 
to  make  the  trip  some  morning  be

me  to  at  least  eat  breakfast  before 
starting,  but  I  could  not  see  w hy  a 
little  trip  of  a  mile  should  require  a 
breakfast 
first.  A  day  or  two  later 
I  discovered  that  the  foothills  were 
at  least  eight  miles  distant,  and  an 
other  two  or  three  miles  to  the  top 
of  the  mountain.  So  was  my  first 
idol  broken.  Later  while  on  a  high 
point  of  land  I  saw  mountains  in  the 
distance,  and  asking  how  far  distant 
they  were,  was  told  200  miles.  On 
any  ordinary  bright  day  one  can 
easily  see  what  is  known  as  Craig's 
mountain,  fifty  miles  to  the  south.

W o rk  on  the  new  building  has 
progressed  quite  rapidly  during  the

of  red  sandstone  have  been  delivered 
and  stone-cutters  wiil  now  begin 
work. 
Contractor  Mohnke  was 
here  Thursday  and  assured  us  that 
there  is  now  no  doubt  that  work  can 
be  carried  on  all  winter.
