• The M. A. C. RECORD. Published by the MICHIGAN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE ASSOCIATION. VOL. HI. EA5'T LAJ."SlliG , )f1cmGAt'\". TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28. 1913. No. li BADGERS BOW TO AGGIES F ighting gamely to the very finish, contesting stubbornly every inch of ground, the University of Wisconsin eleven met team of "Aggies," and, incidentally. the score was ex to 7. This time, however, it was no its first defeat in two years last Saturday. The victors were our own actly the same as that by which the Michigan team was beaten just a week before, 1'2 fluke which gave W isconsin their score, nor did M. A. C. receive any touchdowns as the result of captured fumbles. Contrary to all reports before the contest, which held that the red eJev.cn looked for a hard hattie, the play of Coach j\IIlCaU's men du ring the first quarler lended 10 give the impression thllt they were consider ably bothered by overconfidence. Also the d riving power of the Green and \Vhi te machine had been much II was not until under-cstiOlalecL the third quarter, when the ~'li chi gall lads had amassed a total of twelve points and the conference champions of last year found them selves facing a shut.out, that they seemed to Ilwake to a true realiza , tion of the s ituation. Even then it would not have been too late for them to pull the game out, which they did come close to doing, had they not been fighting a team that was clearly outplaying them, man for man. Though the Badgers, it.dividually and collective ly, were stars, and the M. A. C. cleven was, for the most part, made up of men playing their first yea r of football in the big show, it was gen · erally conceded tha t the ~lichigall men were outd:lssing their more exper ienced opponents. The new style of football Ilc~'er showed to better advantage than in -last Saturday's game. " ' hile a majority of the substanhal gains were made on the line, there wete fo rward passes :md end runs ill pro fusion, with several exhibitions of broken field running wh ich brought the 8,000 spectators to their feet. T he Badgers appe;tred to have the best o f the Farmers in the forward passing, getting a nu mbe r away Jo r good g (lins. Of the many onW(lrd heaves (lttempted by Macldin's crew, a few reached their mark, but more fell useless o n the field, while sever al were caught by red-clad warriors. I n this connectio n it is not (lmiss to mention the fact that in two disti nct cases the game was sa\'ed by one 01 the Aggies intercepting \Visconsin passes. III the thi rd quarte r, J u\i(ln cauO'ht a pass intended for Lange, wh:n \Visconsill had the Green and White backed up against their goal. In the final minute of playa pass from Bellows shot directly into lhe a r ms of Capt(lin Giffo rd, after o ur eleven had made a glorious stand 011 their three·yard line, and gave his leam an opportunity to work it out of danO'e r before time was up. As was the case in the !''fichigan game, it is the final two o r th ree minuteS of play which will stand ou t sharply in the dim memories of a grea t contest. The desperate stand made by M. A . C. when a forward pass had put the ball almost ove r will never be fo rgotten by those who saw it. T hree times the attack heavy Badger backfield • .. '. crumpled and s wayed b(lck from the -stone wall opposition, without having gained an inch. Then came the pass into Gifford's arms, the ball was carried out of danger and the game was ove r. 1\1. A. C. stock took an :Iwful slump right at the startof the g(Lme. Blac klock kicked off to Bellows, who returned the ball to \V isconsin's 20-yard line On the \'ery first down, Cummings skirted Schultz's end for :t. gain of 40 yards. The \.visconsin interfe rence was pe rfect, tackle by and only a beautiful Gauthier stopped proceedings. The igan team was up. fllld, starting from the zo-yard mark, they rushed the ball up to \Visconsin's IO-y nrcl line. The quarter ended here. \Vit hin :1 half minute after the second session opened, the lively band of rooh:rS from East Lansing and elsewhe re, who wert: fol1owin g the Aggies, were doing a del irious dance in their stand, for, with pcr. fe ct },Iiller interference, Blake sprinted tlround left end fo r (\ touch ' down. He fail ed to kick g oal, tlnd the score was M. A. C . 6, \Visconsin o. Taking advantage of the surprise their 35-Yllrd liue. Score. ~J. A. C. 12 , ,,'isronsilL o. J ulillLl brought the crowd to its fe e t when he pulled off:L run of SO yards to sturt the second half. The brillian t s tarl p ro~' ed to he but n flash, and Leonanlson was SOOIi called on to kick llgain. 1 JcCuruy was this re placed by P'obnnz at time. After the Badgers' att, lcks had been stopped short, they kicked back into ~1. A. C. territory. Blak e Miller wus seve rel y hUrt, bu t re fused to leave the gume. L eollurd_ son thcn seLlt the leather back to \ViSCOLLs in's 30 yard line. A GREAT PLAY IN THE WISCONSIN GAME. Badgers t he n pushed on for a couple of first downs, until Blake ~lil!er inte rcepted a fo r ward pass. Julian a nd Blac klock tested the Red line for small gains, ;md L eon:lrdsoll punted to Bellows, who returned the kick 30 yards. The Aggie's work just at this time was quite inconsistent. Th eir ragged and them back mlmy eagerness set yards ill the way of penalties for o ff side playi ng, and they were un certain in tackling. They began to brace in the next took the ball on plays, and soon downs. Their true form had not yet begun to show, however, und, after one down, an OilS ide kick gave \Visconsin the balll?ll their own 4S yard line. The net result of the next three downs was o ne Yllrd, and Bellows punted to Gauthier o n his Is-yard lille. Speeding up, and assisted by a penalty, the Farmers carried the ball pRSt the center of the field, where Van Ghent inter cepted a pass. Alternate attacks by Van Ghent and C ummings took the ball to the Aggies' 40-yard line. Bellows tried a drop kick, Rnd missed by ulches. The fighting spirit of the Mich- given the Badgersthe,M. A. C . team proceeded to keep them on the rUIl. Blacklock returned the kickoff "20 yards,J ulian ripped through the line, and, just for the s ure gain to be had, M. A. C. punted again. LconardsOIl had a goodly margin o\"er Bel10ws in the kicking depl'lrtmellt, and the Farmers gained :m average of to yards on each exchange. As a mal er of fact, the punting duel which took up this part of the second quart er resulted disastrously for the Badg er s, for when they were hacked up to their goal line, Gifford got in and blocked one of Bellow's punts. Th e ball ro\!ed over the line, and Schultz fell o n it for the second touchdown. Black lock failed to kic k goal, but the M. A. C . rootersdic\n't care just then. They had scored twelve points on the COnfe rence c hampions, but in less thZUl five minutes late r they wished they h:ld the two goals which were missed. There was very little :Iction in the remainder of the quarter. Wis consin could not gain and had to punt, while Gauthier preferred to rest his team by playing a kicking game. The half ended with" the ball in M. A. C.'s possession, on Here Wisconsin got off a s plen (lid forward pass, netting 30 yards, Bellows to Lange. Tormey made \Vith the I~ and Van Ghent 8. ball on ou r five-ya rd stripe, Julian intercepted a fo rward pass Rnd pre ventcd a score. A pUllt took the ball out of danger, but \Visconsin sprung another forward pass for more than 30 yards, and the bill! was OLJ our yard lille. Tormey took it over 011 the next play. BcJ lows kicked goal, and the score Was [2 to i, 1\1. A. C. up. te rritory. The fourth quarter was unevent ful until the dosinj{ millutes. It looked like [\ILother M . A. C. score at first, when seve ral long g:lins :unl a long punt sem the b:lll far ' into ,,'isconsin's Bellows fumbled the punt, !lnd the slippery leather was handled by lit least four men before a red player finally gathe red it in. After two plays M. A. C. reco~-e red a fumble , and Leonardson booted the ball over the goal line. A return kick gave .M. A. C. the ball on their SO-,yanl line, and Julian made first dowl.l alone .
