.. ' · . • • The M .'A.C. RECORD. Published by the MICH IGAN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE ASSOCIATION. VOL. 19. EAST LANSING, M1CHlGAN, T UESDAY, ~OVE)IBER 11, 1913. No.7 PROGRESS AND THEN SOME MORE, INDICATIONS FOR M. A. C. FUTURE Slowly butsurcly things arc h,lP pening at the old College. The prospects for the future arc Illost appare nt to those living at Nf. A. C ., hut it w ill not be long before the current of progress wiH begin to have an effect on those farther away. There is un indefinable something' in the air at 'East Lansing which makes t:\'cry one feclthal something big, which will be for the betterment of the institution, is about due. The probabilities ;Ire that this something will be but an accele ra ted develop m e nt, but the feeling is here, and refuses to be downed . T he S tate 130ard held its regular monthly mee ting at the College l:lst week, and showed their progressi\'c s pirit to advitnlagc. Though the perso ncl of th e BO:lrd has [lot chrlllged, there is :HI attitude to g"lad den the he~lrts of fo r mer s tudents. Probably the most important act o f the last meeting was the letti ng of the cont ract for the new vcteri· nary building. This step e levates the new course to a plane of equal ity, if such was lIo t the case before, and the membe rs of that div ision can h:lrdly t'd awl rC:ldy for occupancy. Prospects are tb:1[ it wilt _ not be opened before January first, 1915. T he inadequacy of the present veterinary quarte rs has long been recognized, and action wou ld have been taken some time ago h:uJ fund s for the wo r k' been a\'ai!able. Now, howe~'e r, the defer red step has been take n, and it \yilt no t be long un til our younges t department has a home of its own. Trier Bros ., of Saginaw, received the award; their bid , clllling for $28,136.90, being the lowest offered . . Poss i bly next to the progress of the college, the alumni are most in te rested with the th,hlgS having to do with the histo r,'" and t raditions of the c:lmpu s. Once mo re the peren· nial question, " \V h:lt shall be do ne with Col!ege Hal!~" has :Irisen, and this time it appears that some defi· Ilite a ction will be taken . \Vhether to the ancie nt strllct urc, which holds a b ig place in alumni affections, or whethe r it down is the q\lcstion confronting the board. Some step must be taken. The present condition of the build ing rcude rs it absolutely dangerous to use us a class building, while the members "r the English amI m:'l the rebuild tellr matic departments, by reason of the crowded condition jlre":liting else where on the campus, are fo rced to hold their officeS there. to One of the motious which pllssed the Board last week instructed the secretary to proceed with plans for rebuilding the structure ex te rnal ly, while the inside is to be entirely In the end, the rooms changed. wit! doubtless be modernized and given over solely for office purposes. T he future of the building still re - mains problematical, however, fOr it is uncer tain just what effect future plans fo r an audi toriu m may have Oil the rcmo vlli of Colle g e Hall. These plans for an nudilo rium :\re not so nebulous as was once the c ase. Though not contained· in the mi nutes of the B oa rd meeting, it is p retty generally unde rstood that the secretary will from now o n give a good part of his attention to possible plans for such a buildi ng . It is given Ollt on good aUihority th at by 1915, when the \- cterinary building is finished, funds on hand will be su ffi citnt to warrant a start on a ne w building for an audito rium, so it see ms there is a chance fo r som e sort of actio n here. T he college now has an oflicial architect. Action of the State Board g a ve E. A . Bowd, of Lansing, this position, and in future the secretary will have access to expert ad vice at all times. T he EUllomian L ite ra ry Society was g i\'e n perm ission to occupy the roo m s now held by the Colnm bians :IS soon as the latter V:lcate the m. T he ro rensic society will then move into the old Eunomian rooms, in Williams H al!. Not for lo ng' will the married mt:mbers o f the s u b. b cullY enjoy life in H oward Terrace. T he con gested cond ition o f the \V o m e ns' D uildillg led the Hoard to instruct the secret a ry to noti fy the four fam ilies now living there that they must move at the end of the year.
